What were electric eels called before electricity was discovered ?

In short, electricity has been known since antiquity, and the electric eel wasn't named by Europeans until the 1760s, around the time Ben Franklin was experimenting with electricity.

G-manI believe they were referred to as torpedoes. Albeit, nowadays that term seems reserved for electric rays.

G-manThen again, further reading shows that the electric eel was limited to South America, then any mention pre-1760s of torpedoes would have been referencing electric rays.
