U.S. forces capture a number of wanted Iraqis in Tikrit, possibly including former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, U.S. officials say. Identities still being confirmed.

More as this comes in.

Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq'

Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive search operations

Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been arrested in Iraq, according to unconfirmed reports. Members of the Iraqi Governing Council and Kurdish officials said he had been captured in his ancestral hometown of Tikrit, north of the capital Baghdad.

The US Defence Department said it had no confirmation of the report.

Saddam Hussein is the most wanted man on the list issued by US authorities but has not been seen since Baghdad fell to US forces in April.

Looks quite promising :)

Good.  Hopefully the resistance groups are Saddam's and they'll stop killing soldiers now.

Do you think he'll write a best seller while he's in Jail? :D

Tony Blair apparently just admitted this was true a few minutes ago.

The question is, if it is him and they prove it.. what will they do with him?

Trial for crimes against humanity?

They are saying that the scars on the individual captured match those known of Saddams...I do hope they give official confirmation at the news confrence that's to be held shortly.

They are saying it is official, it is Saddam. That he was captured at around 8 pm Saturday evening ( Iraq time ), with out putting up any resistance. He was in disguise, a fake beard is being specifically mentioned.

4th infantry, and spec ops, Operation Red Dawn. 1st bigrade,- Raider Brigade- approximately 600 troops... two target locations Wolverine 1 & 2... very close to Wolverine 2  a 'spider hole' was found, camoflauged with bricks and dirt.  Saddam was found in the bottom of this. (a pit about 6 to 8 ft deep, )

"No injuries, and indeed not a shot was fired."

$750,000 U.S. , 2 AK's and some other small arms were found with him.

edited for clarity

Jail? Have a military trial then take the SOB out at put a bullet through his head.

Death penalty would be terrible wrong although he deserved it. But he would become a martyr.

Good point. And as much as I would love to stick him in a cell with a couple of inmates named Bubba...the security risk would be too great. Guess perhaps solitary confinement for the rest of his miserable life would be better.

He will be tried in Iraq by an Iraqi council. There was talk of getting him at the Hauge like Molosovich, but this way the Iraqi people he so wronged will get the justice.

I think the death penalty would be fine. It didn't turn the Nazis into martyrs.

They trick would be what to do with the body.

They need to cremate him and dump the ashes at sea so there is no place to go.

I think this is more important where Bin Laden is concerned. I don't really think that Saddam garners that kind of support that we have to worry about him being made into a martyr.
