I voted for telemarketers. Actually, I think spammers are worse and should be in a separate category.  I don't know that I think they should be added separately  though.... can't decide.  So, anyway telemarketer/spammers get my vote.

I find spam in my email everwhere more irritating that anything else.

Film/TV people are just making a product that not everyone likes.  I think the same for pornography EXCEPT children's porn that's a different matter.

Politicians are a necessity of a kind unless the nonpoliticians want to try to run things.

Clergy and Journalists are okay generally.

Lawyers, I don't think belong on this list at all, but just my humble opinion, of course. ;)  When you need a lawyer, you'll be happy to have one!

Oh sure.  That's why you have it on a list of people who are on a short list of the lowest scum to slink across the face of the earth.  Bullsh!t Drew.  Bull...frelling...sh!t.

Journalists. They area a profession that too few keep to the values of of being neutral on issues.  They act a good game but when it comes down to it. They will go make a story on a slow day. (Speaking as a victim of the journalist and his need to have something to air.

Along with "members of the clergy," a group Drew is known to respect and defend. Given that, I don't see a reason to believe that the list represents groups Drew himself necessarily dislikes.

My poll was inspired by surveys like this: http://www.pollara.c...rveys/trust.htm

Among the least-trusted people were politicians, car dealers, arms dealers, cable-TV execs, union bosses, telemarketers, and lawyers. One might wonder why I listed clergy since they're near the top of this list.

Spammers/telemarketers.  What they do basically breaks down to simple harassment, but with capitalist goals.  Plus, they just annoy me :p

Why not the others?

Politicians -- Some of them do good works.  Not many, but some.
Members of the Clergy--  While there are incredibly bad apples among them, they at least *think* they're helping people and contribute to the community.  (Though how much good and harm they do is up for debate.)
Pornographers --As long as it isn't illegal stuff, and the people involved are all of age, they can do what they want.
Lawyers --  Some do good stuff, some don't.  Now, if you'd said high profile lawyers, *then* I might've considered this one.
Film/TV Executives--Incompetant?  Yes.  Scum of the Earth?  Only a few ;)
Journalists -- They do important work, and most often its the people they report *for* who are scumbags.  Though some could certainly use some sensitivity lessons :Oo:

From where I sit I see Priests on the whole as quiet poepl who try to help people forthe most part. It's the activists who form huge crowds outside abortion clinics to harass the staff ( or threaten) or the even smaller group that abuses the children placed in the care of the church.   But for the most part they are needed.

Lawyers With the rules not so unsimple they are a needed tool. They are scum but you can find some. For the most part unless you have an accident They are there to help with estate planning and advice on Tax laws. So they are not on my list.

Politiicains another nessicary tool in this world maybe not the one anyone wants to use it's there.

Spammers/Telemarkers are the reason call screening is a gret thing. and you can alwasy delete the mail. Annoyances to be certain

Pornigraphers. You do not need to go to their sites you do not need to buy the magizines So unless the subject is illegal they are a harmless vice.

Chiming in...

Given that Drew has explained himself in this poll - I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt that his explanation holds true.  I will admit to having taken the poll as a joke right from the start - I find the language uncharacteristic of Drew - that was the first tip-off... and the lack of explanation as to where the poll was coming from (in the first place) was the second.  Drew's explanation actually gave the poll more credence than I did in the first place...

Having said that - I  voted for pornographers.  I voted for pornographers because even in situations where the sex is consensual - or, in the case of digital & comic art - not even real - the people being marketed to are being negatively affected.  I say without apology, and from some degree of personal experience, that pornography is inherently debasing - especially since it desensitizes people to what at its most basic human functioning - should be something that is highly sensitive, and intimate.

Sorry, it's all me. I come in various types and models.

The question, I guess, is if I intended to insult anyone who is a member of these groups. The answer there is a vehement NO. Anyone who says otherwise is itchin' for a fight.

Rather, I have read a number of surveys--such as the one I linked--that do, in fact, place these professions pretty low on the trust scale. And I wondered how we at Ex Isle would respond. (I really wanted to be able to have people rank them, but such is not possible.)

And I guess, also, Drew wanted to get our opinions and explore just WHY these professions are viewed with such negativity and have such negative connotations applied to them.  In this way, the thread has been quite successful....I think if the thread continues to explore, WHY these perceptions exist,  rather than people take offense (which I can clearly see wasn't meant to be inflammatory), then the thread will  certainly be in the ExIsle traditional of inspiring healthy and, yes, sometimes, contraversial debate. ;)

Uh.....huh..........and that's why the characterization of "scum".  Obviously that was intended to inspire intelligent discourse.  :sarcasm:  Pardon my ever so severe skepticism at the idea of such a noble motivation.  I repeat:   :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:  :sarcasm:

Yeah, well, maybe the "lowest scum" bit was a bit strong - that I agree with but I do think that Drews overall intention was to find out WHY we all thought these professions were perceived that way....so lets try and channel the thread to do just that rather than dwell on the unfortunate wording of the title of the thread.  If you can't get over that Lil, ( and I do understand that is hard when aspersions are cast on ones own profession)  maybe better to stay away eh?

I really wanted to see a combined catagory for lawyer/politicians.  That combination is a much worse one to me than say lawyer/pornographer or politician/telemarketer.  When the politicians can make more laws that will then give them more work as lawyers, I see a conflict of interest.  Of course, maybe I'm just cynical that way.
