Day of the Jackal was about an attempt to kill Charles de Gaulle. It was set several years before it was published, however.
I guess there are exceptions to every rule. ;) But imo, "Day of The Jackal" would have seemed a bit provocative, maybe even sleazy, when it was published. Now it just reads like a historical tale.

Oh, and of course there's Stephen King's The Dead Zone.  It was pretty audacious to write a book so soon after the JFK, RFK, MLK killings that treated the main character's attempted assassination of a political candidate as a heroic act.
"Some day, after we have mastered the wind, the waves, the tides, and gravity,
We shall harness for God the energies of Love.
Then, for the second time in the history of the world,
we will have discovered fire."

Yep, Stephen King took a lot of chances at the beginning of his career. These days, though, it seems to be much harder to shock people. Maybe that's what this Nicholson Baker fellow is trying to do: push some buttons and get people talking about his book. ;)

Why doesn't he do what Madonna did! Hers even had metal book covers!
