I got 4.4, so you beat me.  :)

(I think my concept of the whole thing is possibly a bit skewed... ;) )

I think I've taken tests like this before and come out at 7.2 or something, which annoyed me because I minimize trash and recycle AND I don't have my own car. :p

Hey, I like this one better; I got 3.3 planets.  That's still more than we actually have, though.

HM, were you looking for a discussion of the questions, too?  The public transportation one is going to be hard because there are, IIRC, an awful lot of places that DON'T have public transportation, and even the ones that do might not have very much of a system for it.

I got 2.9 earths, which apparently is well below the UK avarage. ;) I would have gone even lower (1.6) if it wasn't for the fact that I flew back home to Germany several times a year and clock over 10 hours in the air but under 25.

I haven't taken the test yet but I know I'm bad at this type of test since I'm always getting on a plane and flying somewhere and I drive everywhere to get everthing done for me and my mom!  PUblic transportation is here is good for some things but totally not good for many other things.  I simply couldn't work fulltime and take care of anything in life if I had to rely on public transportation.

But I"m really good at recycling things as its in my power.

5.7 planets --Ouch!

Yeah.  The interesting thing is that when you go to the next page, to see what actions you could take to reduce your acreage of usage, there really isn't that much that can be done.  Making the changes I reasonably could expect to make - I reduced my footprint by 3 acres. TOTAL.

Going further into the site, they talk about preserving space for biodiversity needs and then tell you how much space we'd need to live in comfortably to be able to meet the laudable goal of living comfortably with the rest of nature. At the UN mandated 12% (which they say is inadequate - apparently we need about 30%) set aside, everyone would have to use about 4 acres total. Compare that with the average of 24 for my area, and my 22 (just took it again, using different guesses, and got 24) personal contribution to that average.

It isn't that I don't WANT to live smaller than I do - its that nothing in my surrounding environment allows me to.  I'm interested in exploring ways to really reshape society to accommodate our needs.  I mean - should we mandate bicycle riding, for instance???

Oh - and one more thing.

Drilling deeper into the site showed up the partisan politics.  (It never seems to lurk very far).

I don't want to discuss politics - I want to discuss real environmental issues.  In that sense - I may have done better to post this in EtU, but its here, and I'd like it to stay here unless topics seem to drift to politics, in which case I'd rather move it....

Just for the heck of it, I went and took it again, but told outrageous lies.   The best you can get is one planet, but you pretty much have to live the life of a Cro-Magnon to do it.   And I think the worst you can get, if you live like my cousin (a Humvee-drivin' I'm-taking-my-plane-if-it's-more-than-50-miles the-world's-running-out-of-stuff so-I-need-to-make-sure-I-use-up-as-much-of-it-as-I-can or-somebody-else-might-get-my-share jackass), is 23.1 planets.  O' course, my cousin would think that means he "wins."  :p

I know that traveling should be one way to get people exposed to other cultures and people on this earth but traveling uses up a lot of *footprint* as defined in this quiz.

I'd need 2.3 planets.... I don't have a car would be one reason.

Says my footprint is 4.2 Hectares, while my country average is 8.8 for my country!

shamba, sure they can! :) We don't need to discuss at all which politicians did or did not do anything, and we don't need to discuss who is right or wrong.  We can discuss, rather, what we think would actually be needed.  I think its up to every one of us to figure out how to get from here to there, but knowing where "there" is and where "here" is is first.  Far too often, I believe, we discuss "who" before we discuss "what."

I tried the test as frugally as I could, and IIRC it said .6 hectares.... but didn't it say 1.8 productive hectres were available per person? Doesn't tha mean if we all lived fruggally, according to this tet, we'd only need 1/3 of an Earth? Or do they not cut up 1 Earth into fractions?
