Michael Kelly, a conservative columnist for the Washington Post and editor-at-large for the Atlantic Monthly, was killed in Iraq.  He is the first journalist over there to die.  He leaves a wife and two young children.

Of all the varieties of virtues, liberalism is the most beloved.

The fanatic is not really a stickler to principle. He embraces a cause not primarily because of its justness or holiness but because of his desperate need for something to hold onto.

He is, unfortunately, not the first to die. A journalist for ITN has that sad distinction. He and his colleagues (who are missing) apparently came under crossfire near Basra.

I remember reading about it last week, but I don't have the link at hand.

None of which makes this death any more palatable.

I am not fan of the press since Ernie Pyle but this guy died doing his job. I can hope his family will have the support it needs from frineds and family.

I'm pretty far from being a Michael Kelly fan, but unlike the rest of the laptop brigade urging the US into various wars from the safety of their OP-ED pages, the guy actually put his butt on the line and paid the price for it.  He deserves much respect for that.

RIP, Michael Kelly.

RIP Mike Kelly......

*wince* :(

Sigh. This is ironic -- the latest ATLANTIC MONTHLY has a scary article on Saudi Arabia; my parents and I were just discussing it early this morning, before I noticed this news online. The article wasn't written by Kelly, but as this points out, Kelly was the Editor at Large (and an editorial adviser, I think) on that mag. I wish the mag the best going on without him.

He is the first journalist over there to die.

Certainly not the first, unless you mean the first US journalist.
