Agreed, that the phone at least should be easily verifiable. All it would prove is that the calls had been made, not that the phone had been stolen.

Their story might not bear out under scrutiny, but I think it's a mistake to dismiss it out of hand. It's not as if such behaviour is completely unknown among Americans or among soldiers.
