In a new study, US researchers describe seven patients who developed nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), an eye problem that can result in permanent vision loss, after taking Viagra (sildenafil) for erection difficulties. Combined with past reports, this study brings the total number of sildenafil-related NAION cases to 14.

"For years, we've known that some men who take Viagra will experience temporary color changes in their vision and see things as blue or green," study co-author Dr. Howard D. Pomeranz, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, said in a statement. "NAION is a much more serious condition because it can lead to permanent vision loss."

With the exception of one patient whose symptoms began 24 to 36 hours after using Viagra, the patients developed symptoms within 24 hours of use. In all patients, the initial symptoms were blurred vision and some degree of vision loss. In one patient, both eyes were affected, whereas in the remainder, just one was involved.

All of the patients had one or more heart disease risk factors. High blood pressure was invariably present and most men also had high cholesterol levels. Three patients had preexisting eye problems that may have increased their risk of NAION.

The final vision in the patients' affected eye(s) ranged from perfect vision to only light perception, the investigators note in the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology.

Pomeranz told Reuters Health that Viagra's association with NAION appears to involve all drugs of this type, as reports have surfaced implicating Cialis (tadalafil) use as well. Although these cases may just represent the "tip of the iceberg," he said that the risk of NAION with these drugs is probably still very, very small.

"At this point, there are not enough data to support performing an ophthalmologic exam on every patient being considered for" Viagra treatment, Pomeranz noted. Still, he said that doctors prescribing the drug should be aware of the association with NAION and consider an exam for patients with several heart disease risk factors.

A representative from Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, was not immediately available for comment.

Masturbation doesn't make you go blind, but Viagra does, huh?

Got it.

~lol~ DWF, that was my first thought when I read your title.

In all seriousness, is there any drug that helps us, that does not hurt us?
In my case, I am going to be on chemo for the rest of my life and for the rest of my life my liver has to be checked for damage from the chemo.
Basically, the 'cure' can cause the damage.

Sometimes a drug can help you, I have to take UROCIT-K for my kidney stones, it's not given me problems but I still got a good sized stone last year, but I do understand where you're coming from.

whoa, Digi. ~faint~

I do take chemo, but not for cancer, so if'n ya gave me that hug cuz you thought cancer, ya might wanna take it back. It is a life sentence with a poison, but if it attacks my liver, then they will give me a different... poison.
And yep, I laugh about it, I've been on this stuff or 14 years now, laughing is all I can do. ~smile~

But cuz ya hugged me, that means ya gotta get one in return.

aw, thanks {{{{{{{{{DWF}}}}}}}}}

That sucks, especially when it didn't do it's job. That is when I usually get annoyed about taking chemo, when I have a bad attack, the pain usually gets me cussin the so-called preventative. I am betting you did a little cussin yourself. ~ow~

My primary care physician has been on my case to take a drug I don't believe I need which, for a side effect, increases anxiety, which I really don't need (PTSDer!).  The last time I saw him, I said, okay, if you can find one that won't increase the anxiety, I'll give it a try.  As we discussed other stuff, he scanned his computer, hopeful hopeful hopeful big frown, hopeful hopeful hopeful big frown, hopeful hopeful hopeful big frown, hopeful hopeful hopeful big frown, and quietly gave up.  :pout:

Yeah, my doc told me all the alternatives, one of which either cured (or so I am told) or didn't do a thing, but it was very expensive and my insurance would not cover the treatment. Chemo was the newest drug that worked, discovered when it not only took out cancer, but put RA into remission.
I hold out hope that one day they will find a cure that I can afford. I hope the same for you.

I hate remembering to take pills.

Hey, DWF, wasn't there a Viagra type drug for women, too? I wonder if they go blind as well? ~yikes~ they weren't kidding when they said that about going blind.

Not only is there the masturbation problem that could lead to blindness, but... you could put somebody's eye out with that thing!
