Breaking news, no real details yet. BBC story.

Quote

White smoke has been seen from the Sistine Chapel chimney indicating that a new pope has been elected.

The bells of St Peter's Basilica rang out shortly after 1800 local time (1600 GMT) to confirm the news.

There were jubilant scenes in St Peter's Square where many thousands of pilgrims had gathered.

The new pontiff was chosen on the fourth ballot held by the 115 cardinals meeting to select a successor to Pope John Paul II.

There is no word on the new pope's identity or what name he will choose, which the Vatican has indicated will be announced 45 minutes after his election.

Yea, ere my hot youth pass, I speak to my people and say:
Ye shall be foolish as I; ye shall scatter, not save;
Ye shall venture your all, lest ye lose what is more than all;
Ye shall call for a miracle, taking Christ at His word.
And for this I will answer, O people, answer here and hereafter,
The Fool - Padraic Pearse

German cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has been elected, and has taken the name Benedict XVI...

Darn.  Now I won't know for sure the big-money answer is "Hitler" when Jeopardy does a "Famous German Catholics" category...

That's one heckuva name, Ratzinger.  Sounds like a failed Dolly Madison experiment.  "Yes, we've been marketing the aggressively, but the raspberry zingers are still outselling the rat zingers by a huge margin!"

I know nothing about the guy, but I hope he does something good...

Cheers,

Zwolf

It is a interesting time to be alive thats for sure..
Hatred ever kills, love never dies such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

Ratzinger sucks...he's as conservative as Paul II. Well the downfall continues...

Everything I know about Ratzinger comes from the BBC profile of him, but he seems to be even more of a hardliner than JPII was.

then again i'm not very well versed in such matters, and not being Catholic, i don't much care abt the minuitae either.

Wow... I just heard from somebody that Ratzinger was in the Hitler Youth!  That's scary.  Supposedly he went AWOL, though, so hopefully he's anti-Nazi, and not just irresponsible. :p   And he headed up the modern equivalent of the Inquisition?  Yikes.  I also hear he's extremely old, so they may just be using him as a place-marker and not expecting him to be around too long or have too much energy.

Cheers,

Zwolf

I suspected it would be. I'm not surprised. I kind of hoped it wouldn't be, but it's none of my business. ;)

Because he was the front-runner; I read a report of the candidates the other day, but it seemed most likely that he would be elected. So I'm not surprised.

So they elected the person that was in charge of enforcing the Church theology? At least that's what MSNBC reported...So basically they elected the person who made it church policy to move child molesting Priests from parish to parish, without informing the communities...or the local authorities...Great going!

I'm also curious...a friend of mine pointed out that according to the bible Jesus was African...he had skin of bronze, hair like sheep's wool...I haven't read that particular passage, but I have to wonder...If the Church is so biblical, why do they insist on portraying Jesus as a white man?

Hmm, I've always thought of him as Semitic, not African, but have always winced at blond, blue-eyed portrayals of him, and thought "Excuse me, he was probably dark -- black hair and brown eyes -- not some white supremacist's fantasy!" :crazy:

But, on the other hand, perhaps it's a case of his being all things to all people, and looking like, um, "everyman", according to the ethnicity thinking about him -- whites think he was white, blacks think he was black, etc.

Keeping in mind that because of the laws and regulations, a lot of young people were in effect drafted into the Hitler Youth.

Membership in the Hitler Youth does not necessarily mean "Nazi".
