That's assuming that teacher have both the time and the desire to do so, and I'm afraid that is not the case in far too many schools.
Even worse it assumes that the teacher knows what they are talking about…  Sure they might be revising high school history books but that is the basis of education for everyone.  I wonder what they will be doing to college level texts.
That's an excellent point. From what I have seen, most textbooks are written with at least some sort of slant. Meaning that the author(s) views come through. They aren't totally objective. So really,to see past that, you would have to study more than one source of information.

Which is fine if you are pursuing your passion/hobby or if its your field of study. Unfortunately, most teachers are meant to be generalists, not specialists. They don't have the time to make such in depth studies. They have to rely on the accuracy of the materials they are given to use and/or make do with the knowledge they do have.

I guess I'll stop here. I don't think anyone really wants to here my rant on the education system.  :p

Ever heard the pharse, "History is written by the winners"? Or how about, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."?  How can we expect people in the future to not commit the atrocities of the past if history is "edited" to leave out all the horrors.  History has always been recorded by the winning sides in each incident. However I believe everyone in the world has the right to know what really happened.
