injured after explosions blamed on a power surge led to the whole London Underground network being closed down until further notice.
British Transport Police said some of the power surges had caused explosions.

Surges took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.

A spokesman said there were "walking wounded" at Liverpool Street station but one person's life was reported to be "at risk".
Taken from The BBC.

I'm just hoping right now that it was some kind of technical malfunction that caused this and not some kind of sabotage or even bomb attack. I guess we'll know in a few more hours.

The national grid says it didnt detect anything wrong with any of the tube systems.

At the moment it doesnt sound like too many people were injured. Lets hope it stays that way.

Edited: Now someones saying a bus was ripped apart from an explosion? This doesnt look good...
And the police are saying theres quite a few injuries...

Reports are still coming in so it's hard to make a solid conclusion. Still, quotes like this one don't fill me with confidence:

BBC said:

A City of London Police spokesman said there were "quite a large number of casualties" at Aldgate Station.

A bus was ripped apart in an explosion in central London, an eyewitness told news agency PA, and there were reports of at least one fatality.

It certainly sounds a bit suspect and I'm not ruling out foul play on someones part.

Yes, it certainly is starting to sound like a wider-planned asttack of some kind, especially with this bus explosion.

This sounds so bad  - and getting worse. My heart is with the people of London - I love this city and I happend to be there when they stopped the tube because of some false alarm. Can anybody tell us what or where happend? Dose British media give more information? Because I can't find anythinf specific on the net.

The Home Office has said that London is under terrorist attack.

A friend says that several more explosions have been heard in the last half-hour.

There are many casualties,

One person reported hearing a massive explosion and seeing the top deck of the bus in front of them fly into the air.

The mobile phone network is being shut down. All workers have been instructed to remain in their buildings.

The entire underground is closed.

That's smart - if they have a system that will alow only emergency services to use the network. Otherwise it'll collapse and nobody will be able to use it.

Police Commissioner Stevens, on October 2004, said:

In terms of a major terrorist attack on London, it is a case of when, not if.

This has clearly gone beyond the scope of an accident and human intention is involved somewhere. Dare I say what we're all thinking in the back of our minds -  a delayed al Qaeda-esq (or similar group) reprisal attack, as Britain was specifically warned by a statement apparently by Osama Bin Laden if she continued to support US Policy in the Middle East? Or something more homegrown; Irish groups over the proposed changes to the Orangeman march? Religious extremists, a-la-Tokyo? Even something to do with the Olympics? The capital is clearly under attack, but no-one has yet claimed responsibility.

There's a report of another explosion in Houndsitch.

Another report says that injured are being operated on in the concourse at Liverpool Street station.

Eyewitnesses are reporting that there are 'many fatalities' and 'terrible injuries'.

Two underground trains have collided.

I just hope that everyone on EI who has friends or family in London has no injuries to report. I'm currently trying to get in touch with several people, but not really succeeding.

There is an emergency system that allows only emergency personel to use the phones. I suspect its already been implemented.

There is also the possibility this has to do with the G8 summit, albiet that is being hosted in Scotland.

WOuldn't surprise me if it had something to do with the Olympics, the announcement and this come too close together for this to be coincidence IMO.  Or G8 for that matter

Yeah, details are a bit sketchy, but its clear that at least Vodafone have introduced emergency procedures to prioratise emergency calls.

Just woke up and turned on the news and am horrified.

Over here on CNN they're reporting two dead and ninety wounded. No speculation as yet as to which damned fanatics are responsible.

My deepest sympathies and concerns for all. I am so, so sorry to hear this.
