He can say all he wants as tastelessly as he wants.  But when he (as he claims he's going to do) travels to another country and proceeds to harass and heckle their Royal Family and they arrest him and throw him in jail . . . oh well.  It was his own action.  I'll all too happily hand him the shovel with which to bury himself.

Having some time to kill while waiting on a download, I took it upon myself to research Phelps, check into his teachings and see if I could deduce exactly what sort of crimes will spring from his inane ramblings.  If everyone else can predict the future, so can I.

My first stop was the website of his church...predictably titled GodHatesFags.com.  If you're truly depraved, as I am, then go to the site and see what ol' Fred has to say...if you're not, then I advise you to not click on the link. WARNING TO THE PERPETUALLY SHOCKED...THE AFOREMENTIONED LINK CONTAINS COMMENTS OF A HATEFUL NATURE DIRECTLY AIMED AT THOSE OF ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLES.  VIEWER DISCRETION IS STRONGLY ADVISED.

Basically what I'm reading there is that:

1. God hates gays.
2. God will destroy America for allowing gays to remain alive.
3. He's rather down on Catholic priests, it seems.  Big surprise there.
4. What else...oh, there's an open letter to King Gustav of Sweden that requires you to download it.  No way in hell I'm doing that.
5. A brief bio of Fred Phelps informing us that he was born in 1929 in Meridian MS...which explains a lot.  There's a charming photo of him included...he looks like a kindly old grandfather who's a charter member of the Dead Pecker Society down at the local coffee shop:

Posted Image

There are other pics scattered throughout the site...including one of them dancing on the grave of a gay journalist.  I admit to not reading every word of the site, but I'm not seeing any overt calls for the blood of any particular person, nor the advocation of any particular crime...let me look again...no, no...not seeing it.  This, IMHO, relegates Fred Phelps and his clan of mongrels to the category of the Common American Kook.  We grow lots of them here.

Big deal...hardly worth trashing the cherished institution of free speech.

You kbow what.  agree with you.
Freedom of speech is allowed to all.
If this man commits a crime the he will have consequense to deal wit.

I do have to say this however.
I would gladly face the consequence of jailtime if he EVER EEEEEVER picketed a funeral for a friend or loved one. In a cooooooold second. In canada I would get a few years max. I would at least make sure his head spun around at least once.
I applaude those who have far more self control then I...however I feel words would not be apporpriate for such creature. Simply blinding action would be satisfactory

Ok, but you have to...or at least should...understand that one isn't a real threat and the other is.  I haven't examined this guy's statements too closely...I personally don't want to waste the time...but there's a difference between saying something should happen and saying something is about to happen.  See my example above.

~.~ I do understand the difference and what you are getting at, however, there are people lying in graves because the threat wasn't real until the attack occurred.

Quote

We don't condemn ideas here in the US...we condemn actions.  Directly inciting someone to commit a crime is an action.  I strongly suspect you and perhaps others elsewhere simply don't want to hear the guy (understandable) and would rather flush him down the toilet through legalities.  That is a seriously slippery slope you don't want to go down.  History proves this time and again.

~.~ I do not deny that I don't want to listen to his garbage. I also have no wish to mess with legalities for that usually does little good. I'd rather he and his kind disappeared, but that will most likely never happen. Meantime, I will voice my opinion of his garbage as I would anything that stinks.

Quote

Nope, I don't play that "what if it were your __________?" game.

~.~ I did not intend that as a game, I do not play games. I simply asked how you would feel. You do not wish to say, that is fine.
I have a gay nephew and many homosexual friends so what this person says hits close to home for me, simple as that.

Quote

I was implying nothing.  Whether or not you read something into it is another matter.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

~.~ I was simply checking, I've had comments tossed at me before, so now I outright ask.

I do not have a problem, with freedom of speech, no matter how awful that speech may be. phelps can spout whatever stupidty that comes to his tiny mind, but when he makes threats, that is where freedoms end. As Shal said, many people have been investigated and interrogated for threats made against the president, etc... I would think insane threats such as he has made, would be looked into.

Do I think shutting him up will make him more dangerous? No. Mosly cuz I think it would take a tank parked on top of him to shut him up, but that's probably just me.

Basically, you and I agree.

I will say, you are braver than I, for I do not have the stomach, or perhaps I just don't wish to toss my dinner (?), to go into his site.  ~gag~

You know...its amazing to hear the words GOD HATES together.
Truly...if there is a God...and he wants me to HATE someone or something (this whole topic is foremost in my mind) He would not be MY god.
He would be too petty and small for me to even respect.

um Lil did you miss the articles Nonny and others quoted?

he is not just spewing hate. he is making threats he intends to carry out. that is NOT speculation.

How do you know what he intends?

In criminal law, in order to be guilty of a conspiracy you need the thought and an act in furtherance.  Talk is talk is talk.  That's just the way it is and I hope to God that we never have laws that can stifle talk just because someone doesn't like it.

so comparing something that is not dangerous to be censored with something that IS makes no sense.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Any way you slice it it's talk and what you're advocating is the stifling of talk based on content which you find objectionable.

Don't get me wrong, I SHARE your objections.  Homophobia pisses me off like few things and this Phelps guy is one of the worst if not *the* worst.  I sincerely hope he gets shouted down and chased away every time he tries to stick his bigoted nose in peoples' business, but that's not the same thing as advocating that the State should silence him based on the unpopularity of his opinions or the belief that he has some nefarious intent.

Of course, God does not hate anyone. Even the worst sinner in the world is loved. As the saying goes "Love the sinner, but hate the sin". A true christian would realise this.

And when this nutjob finally kicks the bucket, I'm wondering if he'll get a nice quiet funeral.

I personally hope he does, just on principle.

Probably what will happen is: he'll die, and that probably won't be long...his immediate family will have a quiet little funeral.  Without his charisma holding the group together, it will disintergrate and most will be able to resume a normal life.  Phelps will become footnote of a footnote in American history.  Maybe Swedish history too.

So long as he stays off private property, he's not at a private function.  He's just destroying the private function for those taking part in it by making sure they see and hear the full Phelps Hate Your Neighbor experience.

Sweet Jesus, this so called "minister" and his congregation are sick, twisted scum.

They take every act against the states (man-made or natural ) as God's punishment. They're even using the hurricane as hate-material

Here's a direct quote, apologies to anyone offended (and i know I was and I'm not American, gay or anything connected)

Quote

Thank God for Katrina - New Orleans, symbol of America, seen for what it is: a putrid, toxic, stinking cesspool of fag fecal matter.  "It is a sin NOT to rejoice when God executes His wrath and vengeance upon America" "Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans."

How unbelieveably twisted it this.

And these "people" (although that word barely applies to such) have the audacity and the nerve to say that God supports them!!!! Sickening.

I wasn't going to look, but I did.  Geez, what a whackjob!  Didn't see the photo, just the gloating over Katrina and the letter to the King of Sweden.  This loudly threatening jackass is actually demanding police protection of the King of Sweden.  I don't know whether to laugh or puke.
