That's true, the system could be abused, especially by those who harm themselves for attention or other reasons that do not have to do with the ones discussed so far - but the question is, wouldn't it be better to have the beneficial effects for those who could use such help than to avoid the potentially harmful effects on those who would abuse the system?

Of course, as per Schmokie's point, the beneficial effects would probably not be as great as they could potentially be, simply as a point of pride.

ETA (silly keyboard): In other words... is it worth it? I think so.

that's along the lines of what I said. Giving them blades is bad, just give them instructions on how to prevent infections.
