Under Construction...be patient ;)

Pick the category you want/need to read about in each post. They aren't really *spoilers*, just a way to keep things neat.

History of Role Playing:

Different Forms of Role Playing:

Table-top Role Playing Games (RPGs):

Free Form Roleplaying: FFRP:

LARP: Live Action Role Playing:

Online Role Playing Games: (see next category).

What *Is* Online Role Playing:

Edited: I've started redoing these as of 2015...which, holy purple cats is 8 years after I started this thread!...because the original formatting wasn't visible in the post anymore, so nothing could be read in the spoiler tags. I'm fixing them now! And the links where I obtained my information were unreadable (to me) but this information is widely available online.

All About Character Creation

What Is a Role Playing Character?:
Spoiler: click to show/hide
A character is a fictitious person, being, or creature that the player controls. So, let's say that Jane Smith (the player) creates an Outlaw, and names the Outlaw "Curly," then the name of the Outlaw character is “Curly”. Curly is now a character that will be guided and controlled through adventures online by the player (Jane Smith).

Character Profile:
Spoiler: click to show/hide

You can utilize what ever method that you are comfortable with. Some players will use "rules" they are familiar with from games they have played in the past. Others will simply "make-up" their characters. And still others will "borrow" characters from fiction, television, movies, or wherever else their interests lead them.

This is a generic character profile that most of the players use. Feel free to add any categories you might need for your character:

Marital Status:
Scars/ Birth Marks/ Tattoos/Mutations:
Body Build/Other Distinguishing Features:
Known Skills:
Birth Place:
Known History:

Here are some questions to ask yourself when creating a character profile/traits and background, and a few things you should consider when you’re creating a character. Remember now this is only advice...your characters are limited only by the bounds of your imagination. These points are only here to guide you into creating a well-balanced, realistic character to play. You don't have to follow all (or any) of them, but simply use them as a reference.

Who is your character?
Where was he/she born?
What kind of family life and background did they have? Did your character's upbringing as a child influence their beliefs today?
Did something traumatic happen to your character in the past? Are they haunted by memories of it? Does it affect how they act/what they do today?
What 'career' has your character chosen? How did they learn it?
What are his/her strengths as a result? What about weaknesses?
Are they afraid of something (fears aren't necessarily visible by all)? What caused this fear? Are they working to overcome it? Or are they mastered by it?
What is your characters financial situation? What possessions do they own that are important to them? How will these items fit into the game?
How does your character dress?

Is the character the right type of person for the time period?

The list could go on and on...in summary, try to be as specific as possible, and make your character realistic and believable. If you have to, write a story or biography about your character--it can really help you develop him/her before you start to post.

What is the IC and OOC?

Spoiler: click to show/hide

"IC" means "In-Character"
"OOC" means "Out-of-Character."

What is the difference between IC and OOC?

When you are talking IC you are speaking from your character's viewpoint and are conversing with other characters. When you are talking OOC you are speaking from the writer's viewpoint (YOUR viewpoint), and are not role-playing with other characters.

In addition to remembering that RP's are only games, it's important to differentiate between In Character and Out of Character relationships. Just because two characters are married, that does not mean that the players behind them have any such relationship. Always remember the boundary between In Character and Out of Character; crossing it or ignoring it can lead to hurt feelings, fights, or even worse. Any way you slice it though, it is not pretty.

Suggestions for Playing Your Character:
Spoiler: click to show/hide

*Do not be "Super-Unique". This is probably one of the most important rules, right up there with "Don't control other characters". All characters are unique, remember that. There is no reason to go over board.  A true RPer makes an ordinary character extraordinary.

*Be careful of having a character who constantly wants sympathy for (or calls attention to) a single part of their character, which is extremly unique. This is always frowned apon.

*Remember to write only for your own character, never anyone else's unless it has been discussed and agreed upon before hand.  If you are interacting with another character, leave the ending of your post "open-ended" so that they are able to react in their own post.

It's very complex. If the pizza man truly loves this babysitter, why does he keep slapping her rear? Perhaps she has done something wrong ~ Castiel
