If there really is more stingray kiling going on now than before, "revenge" is not the only possible explanation, nor particularly likely since everybody knows the ones they're killing aren't the ones that did it. It's more likely that people think they're doing a public service by getting rid of a dangerous threat. It happens often with snakes, for example, even when there hasn't been a recent batch of snake bites or a recent famous snake bite.

There was also a report on one of the Australian websites about the stingray killings, but they actually suggested that it wasn't retaliation - that it was fisherman - when they accidedally get a stingray in their net they chop the barb off so they don't get hurt while untangling the net. I dunno. I don't know anything about fishing.
