I keep hearing stuff about Barack Obama being a rising star in the Democratic Party. I am also aware that people tend to lay the bull paddies on REAL thick sometimes.  :sarcasm:

So-what makes this fellow so special? Why should I give a rodent's hindquaters about him?
(sorry Drew! :D )

Give me some solid facts. What's the skinny on this dude?

:suspect:

Politicians are like bananas; they hang together, they're all yellow, and there's not a straight one among them.

I had never heard of him before this year. Apparently he's known for his integrity, which is rare in a politician. He also votes his conscience rather than straight party line. I remember the Dems grousing about a bill earlier this year where he just flat refused to vote with the Dems, and they were furious. I was intrigued.

He's known for being a uniter rather than a divider - also unusual.

He's young yet. Time will tell if he's worth the price of admission.

The future is better than the past. Despite the crepehangers, romanticists, and anti-intellectuals, the world steadily grows better because the human mind, applying itself to environment, makes it better. With hands...with tools...with horse sense and science and engineering.

well, since politics is all visual, and about images and visibility and categories and apparent attributes, I think what's all about him is his apparent categorical attributes; he's smart, educated, personable, likeable, apparently trustworthy (as far as that can be anyway in that arena), and 'black'

now, I wonder if someone in inner city Baltimore or Georgia ave. D.C. would consider him really black, but there it is anyway for consideration; politics loves categories and using images, and a smart likable trustworthy yuppie who's also on the black side can make a lot of hopeful stirrings in several sides of politics, but more for them to use than for him, himself.

The way I hear it from the pundits on tv and radio, he's hopeful and presents possibilities but too green for a major role just now, like prez or top committee leader. I myself think he makes a good senator.

Personally, I kinda like the guy, hope he continues doing well, hope he continues in the senate in a visible way, hope he makes more alliances and gets more notice, but not just image or 'black' notice but real notice, his own notice, for the real attributes he brings to the table; he's a listener, a thinker, bright, wise, and knows a thing or two about Balance in politics and service, with a capital B; and that makes him one to watch for me; I read an in depth interview with him, and I came out with positive feelings, not only as himself this person, but possibilities, with a capital P. :D
So let's cheer him on as he continues to learn, The Great Game.
"(Do you read what they say online?) I check out all these scandalous rumours about me and Elijah Wood having beautiful sex with each other ... (are they true?) About Elijah and me being boyfriend and boyfriend? Absolutely true. We've been together for about nine years. I wooed him. No I just like a lot of stuff - I like that someone says one thing and it becomes fact. It's kind of fun." --Dominic Monaghan in a phone interview with Newsweek while buying DVDs at the store. :D

First, good to see you!

Second, what Rhea said.  He appears also to understand that the political landscape in this country actually requires working *with* the *opponent* which is also a breath of fresh air.
