I took what you posted above and filtered/composited with the existing banner as best I could. I think the result is adequate for our purposes. The visible generational degradation drives me crazy, but that's inevitable. I didn't plan this with re-working in mind. Most people won't care.

Yet another learning experience for me. How many more before I can trade them in on a Red Ryder Rifle?

Okay, Eeyore and Tigger riding a dolphin, and Pooh holding on for dear life gave me a real laugh when I saw it. Thanks for the wonderful banner.

Okay, celebration of nuclear holocaust I can take.  I'll probably even try to look the other way if you guys put up something celebrating Biafra, or a "here's to fifty years of rickets!" or even some kind of Paully Shore tribute... but A. A. MFing Milne?

I have never been formally asked to projectile vomit, but I feel like, hanging above me, is an engraved invitation.  What'samatter - Family Circus too ballsy?  The copyright on Hello Kitty too restrictive?  Barney the Dinosaur too passe?  Couldn't get Richie effin' Rich on short notice?  Why this horrific treachery?!

There is a word for people who like things called "Pooh."  And that word is "coprophile."  Or, perhaps, toddler.  I get the two confused.

As a curmudgeonly misanthropist, I demand equal time.  If you're honoring this inspid sugartit, then I want a banner honoring his sworn arch-enemy, the lovely (and eeeeeee-vil!) Dorothy Parker, who said Milne's books were not to be tossed aside lightly but flung with great force, and whose review of The House At Pooh Corner went thusly:

Quote

"It is that word 'hummy,' my darlings, that marks the first place in The House at Pooh Corner at which Tonstant Weader fwowed up."
Also, when someone (probably yanking her chain) reviewed one of her books by saying she could be "the next A. A. Milne," she composed the following poem:

Quote

When We Were Very Sore
(Lines on Discovering That You Have Been Advertised as America's A. A. Milne.)

Dotty had
Great Big
Visions of
Quietude.
Dotty saw an
Ad, and it
Left her
Flat.
Dotty had a
Great Big
Snifter of
Cyanide.
And that (said Dotty)
Is that.

Please, please, let this baby-blanket of a banner (though nicely rendered - my kudos to the artist, whose considerable skill should be applied to, I dunno, the Motorhead logo or something to make this up to me) pass quickly...

My eyes, my eyes! Oh god, tell me my posts are not appearing under a picture of f***ing Piglet!  Let me wake up now!

Cheers,

Eeyore

He's slouched over the "E" in "Ex Isle", dabbling his toes in the water -- he's feeling a bit too seasick for dolphin riding.

For Future Reference:
Let's keep ALL discussion of the banners in this "About Today's Banner" thread. I've merged a couple of threads into this thread over the last few days because each individual comment about each banner doesn't need its own thread.

What excellent ideas! Once again, the creativity of the Community blossoms forth! I'll get right on it, Zwolf!
(Actually, I don't know if I can do Richie Rich, and my Scrooge McDuck is unconvincing. Will Donald Trump do?)

No!  No!  No!  (revisiting characters from my terrible-twos has made me willful!)

I actually like Scrooge McDuck.  The comics they put out like 50 years ago are still great.   Richie Rich is easy - you just draw what Casper would look like if he were alive.

Donald Trump... agh.  Why has that guy resurfaced?  I thought we were finally rid of him when he went under in the 80's, but, no, he's back, still wearing that hairpiece that makes me think he's not so rich after all (I betcha there's enough change behind the cushions of the average couch to buy four rugs just like it).  I keep wincing, thinking Gallagher's going to make a comeback* or something next.  Or Sinbad. Joe Piscopo.  Andrew Dice Clay.  Mary Lou Retton. Debbie Gibson.  A WHAM reunion. Steve Gutenberg.  Bronson Pinchot.

The horror... the horror...

Cheers,

Zwolf

*(and by "comeback" I mean "not limited to just VH1."  That channel still gives airtime to guys from Warrant, fer chrissake!  They're insane!  The people who run that channel are like horses that escape from a burning barn and have to be blindfolded to keep from running back in.   We got away from Vanilla Ice once, why do they have to bring him back?!?  They are madmen!  Or madwomen!  Madpersons.  Which reminds me - we don't need Alan Alda anymore, either!)

I agree, LoP. if there's always something different up there, it loses some of it's specialness. Besides, the members chose the banner, and it serves as a symbol of our identity.

I'm just stirring the pot, to keep things active. as we await the opportunity to bring some member-designed skins online. I'm still not sure how GiGi is going to run that project, now that her holiday rush is over, but the tech side is all set up.

Rhea: that "poohversion" ("perversion" with a Charlestown accent) was mine. I'll make a point of giving due credit to each banner's creator, but. please, have I no right against self-incrimination? The gorgeous H-Bomb was D.Rabbit's. If you want to see what my pallid attempt looked like, it's spoilered in the first post in this thread.

Who knew that you were an artist too?

Given that I work with preschoolers, it's a good thing I've never gotten over my initial Pooh love (although I'm a charter member of the "Kill Barney" club. :p)

They are humping Dolphins because...well, Orph did it.

Just relax Spidey, they will be humping their way off the board soon enough.

I don't get why so many are over reacting to the banner play, oh it must be the inertia of change not allowing their minds to kick the old habits?

I can't say I'm pleased with LOP's asking that it only be changed once a month. How about a compromise? One day a week? Instead of celebrating birthdays we can find out what the week has been designated as. I'm sure there's a reference out there somewhere.
Danged if I can find it, but I did find this Multicultural Calendar
Even is we just used the vacant lot next to the banner to mention these occasions, I think it would add a nice touch.

I don't want to go the "This is National Brotherhood Week" route, for reasons I outlined before. Nor did I take LoP's remark to mean a literal monthly schedule. I took it to mean "not every bloody day"

I'd much rather see "OMG! This week's the anniversary of John Crichton's shuttle launch! I *HAVE* to do a banner for that!" Without that starburst of inspiration, *any* schedule risks becoming an empty fossilized ritual. Since no one seems particularly excited by making banners (It's a lot more fun than it seems) I don't think that we'll be flooded by hundreds of of banners whenever the whim hits.

If a muse *does* strike, however, just PM or email me a bitmap or other uncompressed format (preferably). I can usually handle a GIF or JPEG too. Our slight quality issue today came from having two banners of mismatched types.) It's d be nice to get them a few days in advance, so I can run them by the staff.

Of course, EI community events, like James' birth, warrant as much celebration as we can muster. It's all about people

Let's have a Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, banner!

Then have a pic of Ricardo Montalban as Khan, ya know she was believer in eugenics.

Then we'll have Castro Day, Karl Marx Day, Hugo Chavez Day, Kim Jong Il Day!

Don't forget Che Guevara!

Here's an idea, how about we just make special banners for board members' announcements. Baby announcements, wedding announcements etc.

What do you think Orph oh wise one?
