IC:

Timestamp: 0830, Atlantis time

The city was quiet. The few who had been up all night were finally making their way to bed, while those sleeping were starting to wake up. Scientists and military personnel alike were changing shifts, drinking coffee, and preparing for the day ahead. There was a calm mood throughout the city with an underlying tension. There was a constant state of alert as people worried about their enemies finding their way to Atlantis. Latelt the tension was higher than normal, as there was already an enemy in the city. One who would be a useful ally, if she didn't betray them. A small group of people were extra nervous, as it was now up to them to make sure the Wraith didn't cross them and doom Atlantis...

Chelsea yawned as she stepped out of her shower. She didn't mind waking up early, so long as there was coffee available. After drying her hair and changing into her uniform's pants and t-shirt, she headed to the mess hall, eager for breakfast. Her team's briefing with Dr. Weir was only in the afternoon, and she wasn't on duty today, so she'd take the opportunity to relax. She had a feeling that there'd be less relaxation time in the days ahead.

Despite intending to sleep late Martin was awake at his usual time.  He'd drawn a late duty the evening before and he was going to make the most of some off duty time by indulging in a lazy morning.  The briefing wasn't until 1300 so he had several hours to kill.

His military training made it difficult for him to sleep past 6am and as usual he was awake without the need for an alarm call.  He'd made the most of his time, he'd spent an hour in the gym and had showered and changed and headed for some breakfast.

He looked up as Chelsea walked into the Mess Hall and indicated that there was a free seat at his table if she wanted to join him.  He wondered how much she knew about the briefing that afternoon and whether she would tell him anything if she did.

Alison stood on one of the balconies overlooking the city, staring out at the ocean. The light breeze ruffled her dark grey cloth trousers and shirt, and her loose red hair about her shoulders. Behind her she could sense the presence of the three marines assigned to 'supervise' her wherever she went. All three were heavily armed and at least one of them had their weapon trained on her at any one time. It was a concession at least to letting her out of her cell. Alison's eyes narrowed slightly as she thought about the way things had turned out. It might be a while before the Tau'ri would start to trust her. But eventually they would, just enough to let her turn on them and feed, and bring her daughter's Hive ship down on their city. She was patient and she would bide her time. Nearly three centuries of existance had taught her the values of patience and cunning. And so the Wraith Queen stood, looked out at the ocean and imagined how things would be.

Emma was still sound asleep in her bed. As a civilian doctor she had become used to sleeping in varying patterns depending on her shifts and thus she took advantage of whatever sleep that she could get...

Once she gathered some food and coffee, Chelsea made her way over to Martin's table. "Morning O'Connor," she said casually. They were equal in rank and knew each other well enough to call each other by their first name, but she liked to maintain professionalism while in public. She had been in the military so long it became hard for her to get comfortable with other military personnel.

Martin stood and waited for Chelsea to sit down before sitting back down himself.  He'd had good manners instilled in him by his father and it was as natural to him as breathing.  Some of the female officers didn't like it but Martin was old fashioned in that respect.

"Good morning Captain Trey," he replied equally formal.  "I'm looking forward to being sent on an actual mission instead of just practising with the puddle jumpers. Do you think that's what the briefing's about."

No point in beating about the bush.  He was curious and eager to start work.

Dr. Singh twirled a pencil between her fingers, tapping it against the paper in front of her. Light, tentative at first, glowing from the ocean's farthest horizon, exploded into the lab as it peeked beyond the window, pouring onto her table. She blinked and slid away in her spinning office chair, wondering what time it was. A quick look at her watch made her groan. She forgot to go to sleep again. When Rodney got confused in his projects, it went to her. And if Rodney ever got confused, there was a good reason.

Jai stood, joints creaking as she stretched. At least she had fallen asleep accidentally for a few hours during the night. It was too late to try to go to bed now. She would just be tired afterward anyway, and she was going off world today with Captain Trey's team. Tossing her long braid behind her, she made her way to the mess hall, images of steaming coffee dancing in her frazzled brain.

Chelsea and Martin were chatting over breakfast already. Jai took two cups of coffee and a fruit cup over to their table. "Good morning!" she said.

Chelsea smiled at Martin's politeness and eagerness about the briefing. "Some mission I expect, though it can't be too important if they're sending us instead of a higher ranking team."

"Morning Dr. Singh," Chelsea said as the scientist joined them. "How's your research going?" she asked, having no idea what her research actually was.

Jai inhaled the first cup of coffee before answering Chelsea. "I haven't worked on my own project for a few days. I'm doing McKay's math for something he thinks is important but probably won't be." She stabbed at her fruit cup with a spork. "This upcoming mission better be more interesting!"

Chelsea never worked with Dr. McKay but she certainly heard of his reputation, so she didn't envy Jai for having to work with him. "I just hope our mission won't be too interesting," she said, finishing off her coffee. "Can I get anyone a refill?" she asked, standing up.

Kurenai completed her tenth lap of the track well within the time limit she had set for herself, although she was officially no longer an Elder Council guard, having left Drae two years previously, she still liked to keep herself in peak condition.

She showered, dressed in her usual dark blue uniform, pulled on her boots and headed for the mess hall.

Alison turned away from the sea to go back inside, smiling slightly as her guards almost seemed to flinch slightly at the sudden movement. They were jumpy and nervous since this was the first day that she'd been let out of her cell. She passed them as if oblivious to their presence and went inside with no particular destination in mind. In truth she was learning the layout of the city as well as taking a walk to relieve the boredom she was experiencing. She was amused at the many looks she got from the humans as she passed them by. They ranged from suspicious to wary to fearful and it pleased her. All should know whom was predator and whom was prey. Alison's wandering route took her through the messhall and she paused at the sight of the humans eating, an activity she had never seen before.

Lieutenants Johnson and Kain looked up from getting their food when "Alison" showed up. Johnson stared at her, then glanced at Chelsea as she was making her way over for coffee. "I heard that Trey's team will be taking the wraith on a mission," he whispered to Kain, a little louder than he should have.

"Yeah, Sheppard wanted the wraith with them but apparently Weir doesn't want to put the most important team in even more jeopardy," Kain snickered.

****

As Chelsea was pouring herself coffee she heard Johnson and Kain talking. She rolled her eyes. It was only a rumour... still, she glanced at the former Queen as she made her way back to the table.

Martin looked over to where the Wraith was standing.  There was something very hypnotic about her and of course she was very alien.  More so than any race he'd encountered when he was observing with SG3.

Her eyes were so inhuman.  Martin couldn't help shivering just a little as he looked at her.  No wonder everyone was so terrified of the Wraith, apart from how they could drain a persons life force in a minute or two they were simply the scariest thing he'd ever encountered.

Chelsea noticed Martin's discomfort and smiled reassuringly at him. She hoped what she heard wasn't true. Having to work with a wraith would complicate things immensely, not to mention all their concentration would be focused on her. It would be hard to do their jobs properly.

She felt a flash of anger go through her. While they weren't one of the most prominent teams they still contributed alot. Dr. Weir wouldn't just dump a potential problem on them... would she?

Alison too overheard what the two Lieutenants said while she watched the humans eating. She was familiar with the concept eating since wraith children ate in the same fashion until adolescence but she'd never seen humans eating. In her old Hive the worshippers had always eaten either alone or under the supervision of lesser males. She followed the Lieutenant's line of sight to the human female 'Trey' then to the others that she had taken seats with. She studied each human at the table having now identified them as ones that she would likely be working with. Alison studied them slowly, carefully and openly, not caring about any discomfort that she might cause.

Martin smiled back at Chelsea.  He had to overcome his feelings of loathing towards the Wraith.  In a combat situation she wouldn't have worried him at all.  But standing in the mess hall watching them eat was a whole different ball game.

She seemed to be staring at them.  Someone had named her Alison.  Martin had no idea why they had chosen that name for her.  He returned Alison's gaze trying not to show how much she had affected him.

Alison observed the human male return her studying gaze and decided that he was one of the warrior-humans on Atlantis much like the three marines that supervised her. The one named Trey also seemed to be warrior but the other female didn't. Curious. She still had much to learn about these Tau'ri that inhabited the city of the Ancients. Dismissing them from her mind Alison continued on through the messhall. She couldn't complain too much about the source of 'food' they were providing her, non sentient herd beast type animals twice a week kept her from becoming too hungry yet kept her powers in check. These herd beasts weren't as good as humans but she couldn't expect them to feed each other to her. She continued to think even as she carefully observed her surroundings.

Having now been on Atlantis for just a few weeks now, David had settled on a routine jog, each day taking a different route, exploring the labyrinth of corridors the city is filled with abundance.  Sometimes he's take the ones no one goes to, sometimes he will go down the halls where there are a few going about their business, but never had he gone down the more populated areas.  Today, however, David broke that streak.  He didn't know why exactly, he just felt like it.  That, and he was rather hungry.  He turned left, and proceeded to go down the hall that led to the mess hall.  That is when he saw a female Wraith observing others eat.  He went from a light jog to a dead stop.

"Hey, nice day, ain't it?" He asked, very relaxed, but did not stay to hear a reply.  He nodded to her and the guards and entered the mess hall.

"Oh, man, what's a guy to do to get a cheeseburger around here?" He grumbled as he looked at the days menu.  He pulled out a tray, and picked what seemed sufficient to eat and drink, and proceeded to sit at an empty table.

Chelsea and Martin seemed odd all of a sudden. Martin was staring at that Wraith, and Chelsea had been staring at her coffee for a few minutes. Jai cleared her throat.

"What's up, guys?" she asked. Living in the labs often meant being out of the loop.
