I've always been at least a generation behind when it comes to desktops, and I've never had one capable of playing 3-D games stably.  That all changed a few weeks ago.  I'm confident my new system can handle any game on the market reasonably well, and unlike my old system, it doesn't crash when doing anything remotely graphic intensive. :)

I'm years and years behind on my PC gaming.  What have I missed?  What do I need to play?  Games or series I've loved in the past include Starcraft, Alpha Centauri, Rise of Nations, Myst, Homeworld, SimCity 2000, Mechwarrior/Mechcommander, older Wing Commander, Dark Forces/Jedi (Knight/Outcast/Academy), X-Wing/Tie Fighter, and Freespace.  I've also already gone through Portal, which was amazing.  By all accounts, Spore looks fabulous.  What else do I need to check out?

Let's see:

RPGs:
Fallout 3
BioShock (hybrid shooter/RPG)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (a bit dated but worth a play)
Neverwinter Nights 2

RTS:
Company of Heroes
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
Homeworld 2 (if you can find a copy)

FPS:
Half-Life 2
BioShock (hybrid shooter/RPG)
F.E.A.R

Adventure:
Tomb Raider: Anniversary

I'm sure there are others but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. ;) How many years back do you want us to go?

I have to admit that I haven't really bought too many games in recent years because there just haven't been too many PC games that I found all that appealing. But that may just be me getting more and more picky about the games I want to play.

Reorganized games into genres (good idea, Die Walküre!)

Games that are within the DirectX 9.0 - DirectX 10 generation

RTS: Supreme Commander, Star Wars: Empire At War, Company of Heroes, Sins of Solar Empire
FPS: HL2, F.E.A.R, Bio-shock, C.O.D 4, Battlefield 2/2142, Crysis, Battlefront 2
Space Simulators: X-3 Reunion, Infinity: The Quest for Earth

Based on the list you provided, it sounds like you like scifi genre, empire building, space ship battle frenzy: No fantasy or turn based RPG like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars.
I strongly recommend:

Sins of Solar Empire

Star Wars Empire at War

For Robot/Mechanical wars:
Supreme Commander

Space Simulators:
Infinity: Quest for Earth
