Timejump: Three weeks later.

Three weeks had passed since the day Tashu had arrived at Grianne and Leon's farm, and Viconia and Jez had gotten together. Each of the group that had travelled to Chitina with Elena had spent the last three weeks doing their own activities ranging from settling in to helping relocate an entire settlement, but they maintained regular contact and their friendships made during the journey. Aside from recieving an influx of refugees Chitina had been quiet and hadn't had any more raider or slaver attacks. Viconia and Jez's new clinic continued to do well as every sick or injured person in the city now sought them out for medical treatment including the Hampton refugees. They were kept busy but not overstressed. The 'fake healer' Schero's clinic had been standing empty for almost three weeks now. Elena continued her work in helping maintain the generators around Chitina and running her shop. Jacob continued working the fields around town. Jade continued going to school.

Meanwhile Grianne, Leon and Tashu prospered too. With the spare seedlings, saplings and some of the animals from Chitina's farms kindly donated by Jacob along with the rest of the plants and animals traded in for hides and meat they brought down in the hunt, the three hybrids had the beginnings of a self-sufficient farm that would feed the three of them if they occasionally supplemented their diet with a once-weekly or two-weekly hunt. And they had settled in to a comfortable routine that all three were happy with. On two seperate occasions Raiders attacked the farm but a mixture of booby traps, a reinforced gate, rocks tossed on them from the top of the razor-wired wall and three ferocious hybrids had finally taught the survivors that the farm was not a place to be raided. Especially when the hybrids had strung up the skeletons of the dead raiders in the trees next to the gate as a warning for any others who might try. Since the last attack just over a week ago things had been quiet for them too.

Elena glanced out of the window of her home at the bolts of lightening that shot across the sky, followed by loud claps of thunder. She listened to the wind howling through the city and she was glad that she and her family were inside. She was sitting on the sofa in the living room with Jacob where they were reading and generally enjoying their time off. Fortunately it was a rest day for Jacob and Jade so neither had work or school. The bad weather kept everyone inside though and work on the fields had been abandoned while the storm raged. She smiled happily as she heard Jade playing with her toys in the other room.

Following her conversation with RJD-1 three weeks ago Elena had spoken to Grianne and Leon and asked them to visit her so they could provide the robot with information. They would visit for lunch tomorrow and she had been careful to buy food suitable for her two guests. Meanwhile RJD-1 had continued to stay with them in hopes that his circuitry would continue to self-repair and he might remember more about his mission. So far, that hadn't worked out so well. Nevertheless Elena was hoping that her theory was right and they were from Vault 18 and could provide useful information. Elena leaned comfortably against Jacob and rested her book in her lap as she continued to watch the storm.

Grianne wasn't watching the storm. She was inside examining and washing some roots and wild-growing fruits and vegetables that she had found out in the forest that morning before the storm hit while hunting and foraging. Until the seedlings and saplings started bearing fruit she and Leon still had to hunt regularly but the chickens were laying eggs and they were getting fresh milk from one of the brahmins. Tashu had been a valuable help to the farm and worked with the kind of contentment about her that suggested that she was happy with the way things had worked out. She had indeed taken a smallish side-room in the basement as her own and had furnished it appropriately. With Grianne and Leon in the master bedroom upstairs and Tashu in the basement there was more than enough room and privacy for each of them. Grianne had to admit, she herself was happy. This was the kind of life she had dreamed about before she had escaped. She even purred quietly as she washed a bunch of roots that she'd dug up out in the forest earlier that day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tashu was in her room in the basement, stretched out across her bed where she was just waking up from an afternoon nap. She'd noticed that she tended to prefer to nap somewhat more than she did a few years ago, especially now that she wasn't sheltering in some random ruin or perched up a tree, but instead in her own room in total safety. She was glad that she'd met up with Grianne and Leon. She was still strong and vigourous enough to hunt although it took more out of her than she liked. In comparison spending part of her day doing farm work was easy and much more suited to her now that she'd slowed down a bit. Tashu yawned and sat up. She was feeling a bit peckish and thought about going into the kitchen to get a small snack.
Jacob sat on the sofa with Elena while the storm raged outside. She was reading and he was simply holding her, content and happy to do that for as long as she wanted to sit there. Jade, too, had  been the happiest he had seen her, her nights of nightmares had almost gone away, as had his sleepless nights. He thought back on the last three weeks and although Elena had changed in subtle ways, she was basically still the Elena that he had married. She now refused to go outside the city without a guard and was very wary around males that she didn't know-which had him wondering what besides being beaten those slavers had done to her. She hadn't really said much about it, but he could make some pretty close assumptions and they had him feeling almost ill. He tightened his arms around her and thought about the new friends he had made-Leon and Grianne, two of the most fearsome beings he had ever seen, but underneath they were two of the nicest people he had ever met. He'd sat in on a few of the discussions that 'lena had with RJD-1 and he agreed with her about those two coming from the vault-which then asked the question why had the people there created them and how many more were still there? He had been happy to give them the animals, plants, seeds and trees to start their own place and he would be happy to be of any other kind of assistance that they needed, all the would need to do is ask.
Leon walked into the kitchen where Grianne was washing off some fruits and vegetables that she had foraged before the storm hit. If the fruit was ripe enough perhaps they could plant the seeds in pots and see if they could get them to sprout. He smiled as he leaned against the doorway and watched her, the last month that they'd been together had been the happiest month that he'd ever spent in his entire life, even if most of it had been spent working to get this place livable and keeping it protected. Although since the last raider attack a week ago, things had been quiet and he was content and happy with that. It was certainly better than walking around on a long chain protecting people that he would rather maul to death as look at. At least this was a place he could call his own with a mate who looked and sounded quite content, if the sound of her purr was anything to go by. He smiled, then frowned slightly in confusion when he caught her scent, it was her scent still, but....different. He sniffed again to be sure, and sure enough, her scent had changed.
Viconia looked around the new, larger place that she and Jez had managed to acquire with the money that they saved up from the influx of patients that had seemed to be a never-ending stream since the refugees from Hampton had arrived. They had been treating everything from sniffles to broken bones, and she had never been happier. As she glanced around,she thought about the containers on the roof they had bartered from some of the local farmers, she smiled. Now they would be able to grow their most-used plants and not have to forage as much. She was also growing a selection of medicinal and soothing teas in one of the larger boxes so she would have a ready supply for patients and herself, since she enjoyed a soothing cup after the last patient would leave. The place was perfect, it had plenty of room in the lower level for seeing patients and lots of room on the second level for them. She glanced around once more, hardly believing that she had everything she wanted right here-a loving mate and a place large enough for their clinic and their home. The only thing missing that would complete it was a child, and that would come, in time.
Grianne looked up when Leon entered the kitchen and sniffed the air, his face creasing into a thoughtful frown. She paused washing a root and frowned in response. "What's wrong?" She asked in bafflement. Just then Tashu entered the kitchen from the basement and sniffed the air also. However her expression altered to one of knowing and happiness. "Grianne. Your scent has changed. Congratuations." She tolded the confused tiger hybrid. Seeing Grianne's totally blank expression, Tashu clarified. "You're with cub. At least a few weeks to just over a month. I scented it on one of the youngsters back at the Vault once." Now Grianne's expression altered to one of surprise which gradually became one of surprised happiness. "Really? So soon?" Grianne asked, but the news pleased her greatly.
Nolan walked into the shop and greeted Krugen, he was quite happy with things, they had finished moving everything valuable  into the ancient storage bunker which old Fred must have found decaded ago, the old man had build his shop on top of it.
"This must remind you a bit of your depot I guess." Grinned Nolan.
Krugen looked around briefly.
"The depot was about 1000 times the size of this bunker but if you use humanoid sentimental parameters then you are right." Answered Krugen.
The robot indeed seemed to be "feeling" quite happy.
Nolan and Krugen heard the heavy metal door open and an old friend walked in.
"Door is heavy, I'm not 20 anymore." Laughed a voice.
A small man walked in, he was about 5 ft 3 and very skinny, also he seemed to be quite old.
Djo had been a good friend of Nolans father, he had always lived in Hampton, the people there never had known a time that Djo hadn't been there.
Djo came from a part of the world which in the past had been called China, how he had ended up in Hampton back then was unknown.
After Hampton had been burned down the people had slowly made it to Chitina, Djo had been one of them and since Nolan and Krugen had been looking for a shop keeper they had offered Djo a place to stay and a job.
Djo would take care of business, although he wasn't a blacksmith or weaponsmith he was good at accounting and could sell parts and items that already had been made and if needed he would take care of Dragger.
The mule had his own big barn and place to walk around so he was happy, it was raining outside and Dragger hated rain.
Despite the rain Nolan decided to take a  walk, he was out of coffee and he suspected that Elena might grow the coffee plant, if not then he had the seeds needed to grow quite a batch which he would ask Elena to do since Nolan didn't have the time.
Krugen also prepared to walk, he wanted to test a few modifications he made to one of his test legs so he put on the robe and walked along with Nolan for a while.
Djo stayed inside the old bunker, he sat in an old comfortable chair and had his beloved tea so he made himself comfortable.
Sophie Willows hobbled through the street towards the new clinic, wincing every so often with the pain each step caused to her injured leg. She had injured it a few weeks ago just before the two new healers had set up their clinic in an accident and had broken it. Schero's 'treatments' hadn't really dealt with the break properly and had caused the open wound to develop an infection. She'd been going to the new healers since but the infection was still causing her pain so she was coming for a checkup. The weather was atrocious but she'd put a waterproof hooded cloak on and braved the driving wind and howling rain. Finally Sophie made it and pushed the door to the clinic open awkwardly and hobbled inside to find the healers.
Leon was just about to tell Grianne that her scent had changed when Tashu walked in and said just that, only she sounded very happy and even congratulated her. When she explained that Grianne was with cub he was very surprised for a moment, then he too, smiled. He went over to Grianne and pulled her into a hug. He didn't think that anything could have made him happier than the fact that they were about to have their own cub on their own property instead of at the vault where it would most likely have been taken away from them as soon as it was weaned to be trained. "My life has just been made complete." He said, voicing his thoughts. "I have the mate I've always wanted, a place of my own to live and now a cub on the way, a cub that will be born free and live free."
Viconia turned from her musings when she heard the front door to the clinic open and hurried over when she saw who had braved the awful weather to come here. "Ms. Willows, let me help you." She said, getting an arm under her and helping her to an examination table. "What brings you here on such a horrible day?" She had been treating the woman's broken leg ever since she had come in, she'd had to reset the bone and had been using her abilities to try to accelerate the healing of the infection that had developed, as well as give her some of the precious few antibiotics she had in store there, and the woman had been showing slow but steady improvement ever since she had come in.
Jez heard voices coming from the treatment area and he wondered which of their patients had ventured out on such a dreadful day.  He had been watching the storm, it was such a beautiful sight and he wished Viconia could see the weather in the same way that he did.  He tore himself away from the window and went to brew some tea.  It was the least they could offer anyone who had braved the storm.
He walked into the clinic with a tray and smiled when he recognised Sophie.
"I hope that your leg is not any worse," he said.  Jez had been furious at the so called treatment that Schero had given the woman.  He doubted that the so called healer even bothered to wash his hands.  Jez hadn't told Viconia but he had gone looking for the man to speak to him about his treatments.  Fortunately for Schero he hadn't been able to find him.
"I've brought some hot herbal tea," he said.  "You must stay here Ms Willows until the storm dies down."
Dark, billowing clouds raced across the sky as lightning flashed and thunder boomed.  The rain poured down heavily, drumming loudly against RJD-1's metal body.  He stood silently at the edge of the fields at Jacob and Elena's farm.  The incomplete project status of his mission to find assistance for the Beacon Hill Vault was raising the numerical values of his anxiety variables to uncomfortable levels.  He found that the rhythm of the pounding rain on his chassis created a sympathetic feedback effect that reduced those values by more than half.  Perhaps because the sound matched recordings in his database that were hyperlinked to happy memory archives of trips outside the Vault to pick apples and mushrooms.
Sophie smiled gratefully at the two healers as Viconia helped her onto an examination table and Jez brought her some herbal tea. She sipped it carefully as she explained. "I got out of a chair wrong this morning and accidentally banged it." She said apologetically. "After that it started hurting again and hasn't stopped since." She described her condition in more detail. She hated being injured and sitting around the house as she was one of the administrative personnel that managed the teams of engineers that maintained the power generators. At almost fifty and having lived in Chitina all her life she had risen to become quite a high-standing member of the community.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Grianne nodded and smiled, her roots and vegetables totally forgotten as her mind absorbed the news that she was with cub. She agreed with Leon, it made her feel good that her cub would be born free and safe as could be in the post apocalyptic world they now lived in. "Yes." She said out loud. "One of the handful of hybrids that must have been born free by now." She said.

Leon nodded when Grianne mentioned cubs born free. "I know of two." He said. "Theo and Lyann have a lair near my old one and they have two cubs, so far." He'd helped the pair escape the night he escaped and they had found a lair and land that bordered the old farmhouse. He was going to miss them, but they had a good life and a well-hidden lair, so he wouldn't worry about them. What he was worried about were the other hybrids still in captivity to those weak, good for nothing humans in Vault 18. He wanted them all to be free, just like he and Grianne were.

Viconia smiled when Jez brought the tea and nodded in agreement with him. "You can stay until this awful weather passes." She said, running her hand along the woman's leg to see what was wrong. "You appear to have bruised it a bit." She said. "I'll get you something to ease the pain." She walked over to where they kept their herbs and remedies and mixed up some of the pain powder and brought it back. She had already started the bruising to healing and the powder would alleviate the pain. "Take this." She said. "It doesn't taste very good but it will help alleviate the pain." She then picked up her own tea and sipped, smiling. It was a soothing blend she favored.

"Thank you." Sophie thanked them and took the herbal remedy that Viconia had brought her. She grimaced slightly at the taste but finished it all. Just then the door to the clinic opened again and she recognised who it was instantly. It was Schero the 'fake healer' that had caused her own break to be worse than it had been before he had gotten his hands on it. He had oily black hair and green eyes in contrast to Sophie's blond hair and blue eyes. He was wrapped in a cloak similar to hers and his expression reflected his anger and contempt as he glanced around the clinic. "So." He began. "You are the two that have been stealing my business?" Sophie for her part sat quietly and watched.

Viconia glanced around when she heard the door to the clinic open again, wondering who else was braving this awful weather. When she saw the oily black hair and contemptuous expression, she put her tea down carefully, listening to him speak. So this was the 'healer' who had nearly cost Sophie her leg. When he was finished, she looked him in the eye, her expression unreadable. "My partner and I treat anyone who comes in here needing help." She said. "That is all. If they choose to come here rather than to you then I can't help that. However, judging by the condition of Ms. Willows' leg when she came to us three weeks ago, you are not a very good healer." If this pathetic excuse of a healer thought he could barge into their clinic and intimidate her, he had another thing coming.

Nolan walked out and looked at his robot friend who hapilly was wearing the old canvas robe.

"You look like a ghost monk." Laughed Nolan.

"This camouflage will make it so that humans cannot instantly see that I am a robot which might prevent hassle." Answered Krugen.

Nolan nodded.
"True, but there are more robots around here, although I have to admit that you're kind of sinister looking." He said

Krugen stopped.
"I look sinister?" Asked Krugen.

"Well yes, kind of, its obvious that you're heavily reinforced and armoured and you don't have something that looks like a face that people can relate to." Elaborated Nolan.

"Thats interesting and explains a lot about the encounters with humans I've come in contact with over the decades." Krugen said.

The two friends walked on and talked about the appalling weather, Djo appearing, the shop and several others things before going seperate ways.

"What are you up to?" Asked Nolan.

"I am going to ask for some very pure alcohol to clean my fuel cells, it will make them work more efficient, I assume Viconia and Jez will have a suply of it." Answered Krugen.

"Ah, good idea, I am going to visit Elena and Jacob to see if they have some coffee I can buy, I'm nearly out."

"Thats a good idea, you seem to run more efficient after drinking coffee." Concluded Krugen.

Nolan grinned and walked on while Krugen made a right turn.

"See you soon again." Said Nolan and walked on.

Krugen nodded and walked into town, he had mapped every street and alley of Chitina before on his test runs and so he had had no troubles finding the way to the clinic.

Jez's dark eyes flashed angrily and he positioned himself between the two woman and Schero.

"You will leave now," he said.  It wasn't a suggestion and the tone of Jez's voice left no doubt that Schero was not welcome.

"You are only interested in how much money you can make out of healing, there is no room for a healer like you in Chitina."

Grianne smiled when Leon told her and Tashu about the two other hybrids that he had escaped with. She was pleased that they had at found themselves a place and were raising two cubs who would be totally free. She wished that all the hybrids were free to live how they chose. Despite the harshness and toughness of the world they lived in, it was far preferable to conditions the hybrids were kept in the Vault. "I'm glad to hear that." She said honestly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Actually." Schero said, apparently unaffected by Jez's tone of voice although his eyes watched his every move with a wary readiness. "You are the ones that should leave Chitina." He told them coldly. "Accidents have a way of happening and I'm sure you'd hate to be the ones needed healing-or a grave." He gave them an oily smirk as he headed towards the door although he was still keeping an eye on Jez. "Never know what might happen." And with that he kicked the door open and strode back outside onto the rainy street.
Viconia walked over to the door and pulled it closed after Schero left. There was no doubt that he was going to be trouble, but she had seen her share of trouble in her travels and she was not going to let some slick, nasty person like Schero run her off. She turned and looked over at Sophie, if that trouble should come while patients were there some of them could get hurt. "Well, that was an unpleasant man." She said, going back and picking up her tea and sipping the lukewarm brew. "And I suspect there's going to be trouble from him, and probably soon. He was able to charge outrageously because he was the only healer around and now we've cut into that. However I will not be intimidated by the likes of him-he is no more a healer than I am a farmer.
Leon smiled. "Theo and Lyann were on duty when my patience snapped that night." He said. "And they wanted to leave as well. Rafe decided to stay and I wasn't inclined to argue with him. I only wish there was something we could do to help the ones who still want to leave and can't." He tightened his arms around Grianne and held her while the storm still raged outside. Maybe the intervening year between when he left and now had changed Rafe's mind, but he still didn't know how he could help the others escape, it would be suicide for him to try it alone or even with Grianne helping, the humans would not let their protection go so easily.
Jez agreed with Viconia, Schero was trouble and they would have to be extra vigilant.
"I'm suprised that he threatened us in front of a witness," Jez said.  "Ms Willow I don't want to frighten you but I think you should be careful too."
