Fallout: New York: Part 2

After the robocops had been restored to functionality, Sam, Grianne and the others settled down for the night to sleep. They remained undisturbed all night although not all of them slept soundly. Upon waking when it became light they would have breakfast then depart the ancient police station and head back home to Chitina.
Samantha woke up with a start, her heart pounding and breathing rapidly from the effects of the nightmare that she had suffered. She'd taken a long time to get to sleep once they had settled down and had woken up once in the middle of the night from another nightmare, a distorted mixture of robocops and the traps she'd been forced to overcome. She rolled from her side onto her back and relaxed as she waited for her heart rate to slow. She wondered if she would ever be able to sleep peacefully again.
Grianne was still asleep, cuddled up to Leon. Perhaps because she had not been a prisoner of the insane AI, or because she was with cub she had slept soundly all night.

Hawke sighed as Lilly woke up yet again from a restless night of sleeping. He was only glad that she hadn't woken screaming and disturbed anyone else. He soothed her yet again and let her relax against him. It was getting morning and they would be getting up for breakfast soon, then get on their way back to Chitina. He thought he'd heard Sam as well, and he couldn't blame either of them after what had happened. He was only glad that they had managed to arrive in time to save them before that crazy AI killed them.
Leon twitched and woke up growling before realizing he was safe and wrapped around Grianne and their cub. He was feeling much better now than he did yesterday, his injuries beginning to heal. He noticed it was getting morning, but he stretched and stayed next to Grianne, not wanting to move just yet, even though he knew they would have to start stirring soon and getting ready to go. He was content for the moment to simply hold his mate and feel their cub moving about inside her.
Viconia opened her eyes and smiled. She hadn't been dreaming, she was snuggled up to Jez and it was almost time to get ready to go back to Chitina, something she would be very glad to do. The trap rooms that she and Sam had been put through had scared them both almost senseless and she'd been on the restless side all night, reliving both rooms, and if it hadn't been for her mate there holding her, she probably would have screamed the place down at least once from her nightmares. She cuddled up to him, content to lay there for a bit while he was still sleeping.

Grianne woke when she felt Leon stirring and sounds of the others starting to awaken. She yawned indulgently and snuggled her mate briefly before sitting up and getting enough food for them both. She would be happier once she was safely back at the farm, but for now she was content enough now that Leon was safe. "Good morning." She greeted him quietly between bites of breakfast.

Djo had returned with food and water including a bucket of water for Dragger, the mule seemed to be very happy with it.
Nolan had dozed off, he had found a large and comfortable chair and within a few minutes he snored like a chainsaw, Djo, while having been alseep most of the time climbed on the desk again and followed Nolans example so withinj a few minutes only Krugen and Dragger were still awake.
The next morning they left the police station to let Dragger graze on a patch of grass next to the building, Djo was happy to be outside and started a Tai Chi routine.
"I hope we can travel back soon, I've had it with this place." Grumbled Nolan while he spotted one of the robcops checking on Dragger.
"At least heaps of metal leave us alone." Commented Djo while exercising.
Krugen didn't say anything, he kept an eye on the surroundings and monitored the communications between the police station and the robocops.

Jez stirred in his sleep as Viconia moved. He had been woken several times in the night as she moved restlessly during her dreams. Jez hadn't woken her but had held her tightly until she settled again. He couldn't imagine what she'd been through but he did hope that once they were back home Viconia would be able to talk to him about her ordeal.

While immobilized, he made use of the time by running a low-level disc scan on his hard drives and by playing 3,764 games of virtual chess with Krugen over their wireless connection. When the Humans and Hybrids began to stir, he brought his systems up to normal functioning levels. He would not be able to get repaired until he returned with the others to Chitina, but during the time he was connected to the mainframe he had learned the location of a supply of lubricating oil.

Truly safe places in the radioactive land were rare and they'd be keen to exploit it. Sam wasn't in the slightest bit regretful to leave the police station and shut the door behind her. She followed Grianne for a while until they relocated the wagon. She climbed up onto it while the others either sat inside, aboard it or mounted their own horses and they began the journey out of New York. Because they were now beyond the robot patrol range she noticed Grianne and the others starting to become more alert for any dangers that might lurk. She glanced up at the decaying buildings and worn streets as they travelled. She knew for one that she wouldn't settle here-she'd stay in Chitina. Too many bad memories. Sam looked ahead eagerly, waiting for the moment that they'd be out of the city.

Hawke rode mostly beside the wagon as they all finally got everything together and started heading back to Chitina. Once they traveled past the robocops designated patrol area he became more alert and wary and cast the occasional glance at the wagon where Lilly was riding. He'd caught her glances in his direction as well and he smiled. No matter what anyone else thought, he was going to seal their relationship even if it meant moving into Chitina with her. But since most of the town seemed to accept the hybrids without question he didn't think that would be too big of a step, and the few who didn't he wouldn't worry about, as long as they left him alone to live his life.
Leon rode on the other side of the little group as they made their way through the town to the outskirts. He though Jacob would find the large park to be an excellent place to place another farm, and there were quite a few buildings in the patrolled area that could be reclaimed when they decided to expand out. The robocops would keep the area safe until they decided to venture that far. He knew he and Grianne would remain at their farm, safe behind the wall where they could raise their cub in safety and teach it how to take care of itself. He couldn't wait to get back there now and simply relax with Grianne snuggled up next to him while they waited for the birth to occur and he glanced over at her and smiled.
Viconia drove the wagon while the other two women rode, glad to be going home. She'd woken and had breakfast with the others, yawning a bit after sleeping restlessly. She smiled at Jez, who was riding beside her and then looked around as they headed out. The large park must have once been beautiful, but it was now just an overgrown wilderness in the middle of the city of crumbling ruins. The only really intact buildings were the ones in the area patrolled by the robocops, and it looked like it would make for a good place to expand when Chitina started to get too crowded. She figured Jacob would want to go look at the park sometime, to convert it to a farm, but Viconia just wanted to get back to her clinic and stay there for a long time, her memories of this place were not that good and she really didn't want to come back to it unless she had to.

Jez returned Viconia's smile. "We're going home my love," he said quietly. "I would be happy never to leave Chitina again."
It would be nice to have some quiet time with Viconia.
Jez knew that it was quite likely that they would have many other adventures, trouble seemed to find their little band and Jez also knew that he could never sit at home while humans, hybrids or mutants were in trouble. Maybe one day they would raise a family like Leon and Grianne but that was in the future. Jez squeezed Viconia's hand, for now he was content to sit by her side while they travelled home.

His behavior pattern recognition program noted a long silence among the group as they traveled. "I have an extensive library of sing-a-long songs for long journeys," he announced.

"Thank you for your offer," he said to the robot. "I can't speak for the others but I do enjoy music."

Nolan walked next to him and so was Dragger with Djo sitting on his back, the old man seemed to be asleep or in a trance like always so Nolan kept an eye on the mule.
They all were happy to head home, there was plenty of work to do.
Nolan smiled at RJD-1's offer but told the robot that he wouldn't sing along to anything.
"People would pay me to shut up instead of to sing." He said.

The group had travelled for the rest of the day and had made good speed after leaving the boundaries of New York city. They'd travelled the rest of the day stopping regularly for meals and breaks. They had almost left it too late sheltering at night in the remains of an old world motel and had spotted a pack of feral ghouls roaming nearby, almost having to fight them. But they had managed to remain undetected. The rest of the night had been undisturbed and the following morning they resumed their journey. Now, they weren't too far off from the borders of Chitina.
Grianne was riding on the wagon for a while as long hours of riding on horseback was becoming uncomfortable for her. She was looking forward to dropping off their human companions outside Chitina and finally being able to return to the farm she shared with Leon. Once she was back behind its walls it was unlikely that she would emerge from the farm again until after she'd had the cub. Despite thinking happy thoughts of when she would be home Grianne remained alert and wary of their surroundings as they travelled down the road towards Chitina.
Sam had not slept much better the night they'd spent in the motel as the one back at the police station. As a result she was tired and having some difficulty keeping Grianne's horse under control as they'd swapped positions for a while. The bruises she had incurred while a captive of the robocops ached with the motion of riding a horse. She'd also been jumpy for the last day or so during the journey. She hadn't been so restless and jumpy since the first few days that she had first left the Vault. As it was, Sam was almost as alert as a hybrid to their surroundings.

Hawke rode on ahead of the wagon just a bit to keep an eye on the road ahead and he sighed in relief when they reached familiar territory and the walls of Chitina came into view. Now maybe Lilly and the others would feel safer and settle back down instead of being so jumpy and restless. He was getting a little nervous about moving into the town himself, but not enough to have second thoughts. If anything, he could provide security for the hospital, or even learn some medicine himself, which would be useful. He glanced back just a moment and smiled as the walls got closer.
Lilly rubbed her tired eyes as they got closer to Chitina and they could see the walls. She was very relieved to see it and hoped that she would be able to sleep better that night, as the last couple had been very restless. She couldn't wait to get back to town and back to the hospital where she could finalize everything and get it ready to open for business. She knew that Viconia and Jez would still keep the clinic for non-emergencies, and the hospital would handle emergency patients. She wasn't looking forward to facing her mother again, especially since it seemed Hawke was going to be around more, but she wasn't going to allow her mother's bigotry ruin a good thing. She smiled faintly when Hawke glanced back at her briefly. No, he was the best thing that ever happened to her and she wasn't going to give him up for anyone, especially her mother.
Viconia smiled and squeezed Jez's hand when they started approaching Chitina. Finally, their ordeal was almost over with and she could get back to more important things, like checking up on some patients and getting the clinic going again. The hospital would soon be opening for business and if they expanded out to the area patrolled by the robocops they would need a clinic/hospital out there as well, so she would have plenty to keep her busy when she wasn't busy with Jez and she was looking forward to it. Now that the crazy AI was taken care of, she wouldn't be so wary about coming back out here, though right now she was a bit sore from her little adventure in the trap rooms, which made guiding the big horses pulling the wagon a little difficult at times, but the horses were docile enough that she wasn't afraid of them spooking and running off. As they got closer to Chitina she straightened in her seat and smiled. Almost home.

Sam yawned after she'd dismounted from the horse and Grianne took it from her. She had never been so glad to see the gates of Chitina. After Grianne had told them that she and Leon were returning to the farm she half-smiled at the tiger hybrid and thanked her for helping rescue them from the AI. She knew that she, along with the others would be dead or worse if they hadn't been rescued. Once the two hybrids had disappeared into the forest she went over to the guards and had them open the gates. Sam walked with the others inside and sighed in relief once they were back within the city and the gates shut behind them. "I'd better go and report the fact that we're back." She said, rubbing her eyes tiredly. Maybe tonight she would sleep a little better knowing that she was truly safe.
OOC: And this arc is just about finished. I'll be starting the new thread soon so watch this space.

Viconia sighed in relief when the guards opened the gates and she was able to guide the wagon into Chitina. She climbed down once she reached their home and let some boys take the wagon and horses to be brushed down and fed and stored until needed again. She went inside the clinic, where Colleen was tending to a patient. Once the patient left, Viconia went to the back and sat down, exhausted from a couple of restless nights and she hoped she got some better sleep in her own bed. She glances up when Lilly walked in with Hawke and how Colleen immediately bristled. She was going to have to do something about that nurse, she was good at her job, but having an attitude like that was not what she wanted in her medical facilities.
Colleen noticed when Jez and Viconia walked into the clinic and she kept a straight face as the gray-skinned woman went and sat down, secretly glad that she looked like she'd been through hell and back, but when Lilly walked in with that black hybrid she couldn't keep the venom out of her voice. "What are you doing with that thing?" She snapped.
"He kept me safe after we were found, mother." Lilly said tiredly. "I just though I'd let you know we were back safely and I'm going home to get some rest. Get used to seeing Hawke around a lot more because he's going to be staying with me." They'd talked some on the way back and he'd told her how he felt, which was how she felt about him and nothing, not even her mother, was going to come between that. Before her mother could recover from the shock of hearing that, she walked back out with Hawke and over to her little hut not far away and went inside with him, closing the door behind her.
Hawke didn't say a word when Lilly and her mother talked, he just held her hand and walked out with her to her little hut. When they walked inside he knew he was home, no matter how small it was, because he had his mate with him.

Dragger seemed not to be worried, even pleased while he sniffed the air.
"Must be someone we know." Grumbled Nolan and barged in followed by Djo and Krugen.
"About time you showed up." Laughed a deep voice.
They saw a large man, almost the size of Nolan, maybe half a centimeter less tall, all other features were quite like the blacksmith, the man was older though, between 60 and 70 years old, his face as wrinkled and his hair thinning and much longer then Nolans but he was definitly related.
Nolan walked in and gave the older man a big hug.
"What are you doing here?" Nolan asked.
"I'm here to collect you, Djo and Krugen, I need your help back home." Explained Nolan senior.
"All well over there? How is mom doing?" Asked Nolan.
"She's fine, its not about her, I've brought the ship along and she's on board, we're searching for a treasure." Elaborated Nolan senior.
Nolan senior explained that he had finished building and fitting out his new ship and that he had bought a treasure map from a fisherman while being on a shakedown cruise.
"You finally finished the ship?" Asked Nolan.
"Yeah, took a decade to build but she's finished now, I call her The Black Rock, she's ready to sail and all your belongings are on board already."
"You still impatient, also Djo comfortable here, why Djo would go?" Grinned the old man.
"Because I have your chair on board."
They decided to eat the food that Nolan senior prepared and talked the whole thing over, Nolan senior was an adventurer, always had been sailing the seas.
If Old Nolan believed something was worth spending time and resources on then it usually was worth looking into it.
He had found a lot of artefacts and objects from before the great war including blueprints, several strange devices and of course precious metals.
"The fishermans map seems to point at an island, it looks like it might have been a marine base so there might be valuable equipment there." Explained Nolan senior.
Nolan, Djo and Krugen of course would help Nolan senior, even moreso now Chitina had become a large and powerful stronghold, they even had a robot force under their command if needed and enough technicians to maintain and upgrade the city.
"Seems we have to say goodbye to everyone." Said Krugen.
"Yeah, true, I don't like saying goodbye to friends though." Sighed Nolan.
"I'll contact RJD-1, he can pass on our goodbye." Suggested Krugen.
And so it was done, they fetched Dragger and the little wagon and left town, at the gate Krugen contacted RJD-1 and explained their disapearance and passed on greets to everyone.
The Black Rock turned out to be a large galleon like vessel, almost 900 tons and indeed it had a black hull and dirty grey sails, the ship also had a large hot bulb engine which was connected to a propellor, the ship could only make 3-4 knots at most while using the engine but it was useful when winds were unfavourable.
It was still dark when the ship sailed away.

When his AI circuits came back online, he was aware that the outline generated by his activity calendar sub-routine was in conflict with itself. His extrapolation program had placed him in both Beacon Hill Vault and Chitina. "I want to be in two places at the same time," he said to himself. "This would only be possible on the quantum level. My wave function is too large to remain uncollapsed for any measurable amount of time." He immediately set his extrapolation and simulation programs to calculating a solution to this scheduling problem.
He then stiffly and awkwardly climbed down the ladder from the clinic loft and said, "In the meantime, I must arrange for some repairs to my damaged chassis components."
At that moment, he received a wireless transmission from Krugen. The content of the message triggered a high numeric value in his sadness variable and he lowered his head with a soft creak.
