You obviously didn't watch Andromeda. These were lines from episodes in the first season.

The first that Lil quoted was from Beka Valentine in the first episode.

The second that JB quoted was from Tyr Anasazi.

Datalyss, the quote is from my response to Captain Jack being made a moderator.  Someone had made a comment about saluting him (jokingly) and in response I (also jokingly) quoted a line from Beka Valentine, a character in Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.  This board rose from the ashes of a previous message board called Slipstream bbs which was dedicated to Andromeda.   I guess the line I quoted reminded Orph that this board started as an an Andromeda board.  Hence the thread title.  I presume that the quote John repeated was another bit of nostalgia from that show.

BTW, John, Orph, Rommie....what exactly ARE the mathematics of tears?

They'd be fluid dynamics equations. Which are painful enough to drive me to tears, providing a nice symmetry.
Okay, I'm not John, Orph, or Rommie, but I *am* a failed mathematician!
Yes, I am an economist. Yes, I do frequently sing "Can't Buy Me Love". No, I don't see any contradiction there.

What's a fluid dynamics equation? The Navier-Stokes, for one. (well, three -- two in the stream function formulation)

*must watch Andromeda at some point*

Maths, however? That I can do! Though it is two+ years since I did a fluid mechanics module...

Yeah; I apologize if my non sequitor was a little confusing.  I just saw the Beka line, and... well, any excuse to quote Tyr.  I could have gone all Dylan Hunt:

"The only thing that matters in life is that we try."

But I decided to have fun instead.

As for The Mathematics of Tears, I'm afraid the conversation has already moved beyond me.  Now, if it was The Literature of Tears, I could take a shot.  I did really well on the English portion of my SAT's, but the math part, not so much.

You are not correct, sir.  I do remember seeing almost every episode, but as a casual fan, I don't remember specific details. I don't watch the DVDs 1000 times a day looking for quotes.  I don't even have the DVDs.

Yes, I know EI started out as the old Andromeda BBS, but that still doesn't explain why that particular fact had to be pointed out.

It was an in-joke, not a listing of facts.  :)

Two minus one equals tears.

Sometimes. Other times, it's a great reason for a party.

And Datalyss, the reason for the title of this thread is simple: I found the exchange very amusing, but while posting it, I realized that it wouldn't make much sense to people who weren't fans of Andromeda (or, as it turns out, to some casual fans). Near the end of the premiere, Beka, faced with a career officer in a near-mythical ship of the even more nearly mythical Commonwealth, got a bit defensive, and said that if her crew joined him, they would not salute him or call him "Captain". "Dylan", he replied, "Dylan will be fine."

See? You weren't missing anything
