The irony of that ad is that Beechham's pills [some background in this Time article about his son], made of aloe, ginger and soap and made him the third richest man in England -- but reviled because he a) advertised them widely via print and jingles, and b) they were made of common natural ingredients [real soap is made by boiling fat in an alkali solution from burned seaweed or wood); and c) he made the pills for a quarter cent each and sold them for 12/10c to 90/50c! In short, his "scandal" would be laudable "business as usual" today (and the markup much greater). Ginger and aloe reaming among the more popular "neutraceuticals" and herbal remedies.

His most famous jingle ["Hark! the Herald angels sing/ Beecham's Pills are just the thing/ Peace on earth and mercy mild/ Two for a man and one for a child"] was still well enough remembered by the old people of my youth that I remember parodying it (rather poorly, as a rat poison) in junior high.

Be careful around gas flames with this actual 1930s circa lighter or you  might just blow up something or someone. These types of wood alcohol  lighters can burn for up to 10 days and were available for purchase from  the 1920s to the 50s.

Terrible self-serving "health" advice  -- and disturbing phallic/pedophillic subtext, published the year after Nabokov's Lolita.

Okay, granted that this isn't an old picture but, it is an old invention and it states a little bit of it's history.

Does it still count?

Mark: Remind me to tell you a story about a turtle I saw once who ducked and covered at the WRONG time. I'll have to do it via PM, cause it's kinda raunchy.

good ole days?
http://www.cnn.com/2...tion/index.html

I read a lot bout this ship when I was a kid, in those good ole days, I was an expert in this ship,
and though it was always at that Boston dock, it was still the oldest always commissioned ship
in the US Navy
;)
but what I really wanted to say is,
back in the good ole days I would apply, meet, chat, look good, be thirty five or less, get a yes, and
start a job where I am paid making a living amounts, and get the med benefits too, way back in those
good ole days, when someone could actually, you know, take care of dependents or just take
of yourself
"(Do you read what they say online?) I check out all these scandalous rumours about me and Elijah Wood having beautiful sex with each other ... (are they true?) About Elijah and me being boyfriend and boyfriend? Absolutely true. We've been together for about nine years. I wooed him. No I just like a lot of stuff - I like that someone says one thing and it becomes fact. It's kind of fun." --Dominic Monaghan in a phone interview with Newsweek while buying DVDs at the store. :D

Well, okay, so the Daleks were out to EXTERMINATE us, so I guess that made sense, but in the 70s the Good Guys on Dr. Who were in on the fun too:

Aren't you glad you don't live in that alternate universe where the Borg arrived a few centuries earlier?

I don't think this  is reall social commentary, but I found it amusing.
