Tialyn Maern was racing for her life through the dark of night, her cloak flying behind her. Morning Star's hooves were kicking up the dirt on the road as the demon-infected and violent were-panthers chased Tialyn and Reece. Their intent was obvious: stop and slaughter the hunters before they could reach Delmi and report to Joanna the were-creatures' whereabouts. Patrol tonight for Tialyn and Reece had gone horribly wrong too fast to even think about.

Suddenly the massively built, 6'4", bald City Guard and hunter shouted, "Tialyn! Watch ou...!"

But that's all Tialyn heard as she tried to swerve around a lightning-bright rip that seemed to be forming in front of her. It seemed that all sound was sucked from the air around her. The white-haired Elviri screamed as she yanked back on Morning Star's reins. The horse screamed as well, as she rose on her hind legs, pawing the air at the approaching blackness surrounded by flashes of light. Tialyn saw and felt the surge pass through her as Morning Star skidded into the void. Tialyn could faintly hear the wailing of a cat near her.

* * * * *

When her horse's hooves crashed on the ground and sent shock waves through her, Tialyn grunted in pain. A furry projectile shot past her ear and thumped heavily against something, then rebounded and landed behind her saddle, hissing furiously.

Tialyn felt the static behind her lessen and disappear, leaving the night in eerie quiet. She glanced down and blinked in shock, her chest still heaving at the adrenaline blazing through her. How the hell did she get into the city? she thought looking around at Delmi.

Then she noticed the group of people practically in front of her. Tialyn blinked.

"Captain?" she asked sharply when she saw Joanna. Only something wasn't right.

The white-haired Elviri slid off her horse, its white coat nearly shining in the late fall night's moon. Morning Star was snorting and pawing the ground, trying to back up. Tialyn held the reins tightly with one hand. With the other she flung her cloak back to reveal her sword. Her movements revealed her Guardian Unit uniform, gray pants and tunic top, with the emblem, a full moon with two crossed swords, on her upper arm. Tialyn stared at her Guardian group...familiar yet there was something terribly wrong. She saw Sephira, Vincent, the Professor, Eru, Graayth, and Gaelan.

But the others...others who seemed part of the group were wrong. They didn't belong! Where was Kat, Breanna, and Reece. OH MY GODDESS! Reece, thought Tialyn in a panic as she stared at Jo. She and Reece were being chased by the demon were-panthers...and Reece was still out there!!

Tialyn put a hand on her sword. She stared at Jo with her gray eyes glowing as the moonlight reflected off them. "What the hell is going on?" she demanded, but her voice betrayed her fear, too.

Sephira had nodded at Jo when she told them to resume their patrol and to be careful, but just as they started walking, following Jo, a bright white light flashed in front of them and what appeared to be an opening opened up into thin air. Sephira gasped when a white horse sporting a cloaked figure on its back stumbled through that opening. She recognized that horse, and the white hair peeking out from the hood of the cloak as the figure slid off the horse and addressed Jo as 'Captain', though the voice was frightened. Tialyn? No, it couldn't be, but when the figure threw off the hood and threw back her cloak to reveal her sword and uniform, Sephira could only stare, and could not stop the tears that started flowing down her cheeks.

"Tialyn?" She breathed, hardly daring to believe her eyes. "Is that you? No...it can't be...you're.....!" But she couldn't say it out loud, it hurt too much. "Alive?" She said instead, her voice almost a whisper. But there she was-white hair, white horse, cat and all. "I don't believe it!" But she looked slightly.....off, the same, yet different.

Talyn was just starting to walk on their patrol again, staying next to Jo, when he saw the bright, white light directly in front of them, and he stepped between his mate and the light when the white horse stumbled through. When the female slid off the horse and addressed Jo as 'Captain' he got very confused. He didn't recognize the white-haired Elviri as part of their group, but Sephira obviously did, though her voice betrayed her confusion and her tears and exclamation told him that this was someone who was thought to be dead. Wait, Sephira had called her 'Tialyn'....Jo had told him about their friend who had been killed before he was transferred over-a white-haired...but she didn't look dead to him now, and very much didn't look like the undead they had just fought. Now he was confused, and it probably showed on his face.

Vincent hissed in surprise when the.....hole was the best description for the bright, white, light-filled void that opened up in front of them. He drew his sword and held it ready as the white horse stumbled through-bearing a remarkable resemblance to Morning Star. When the female rider slipped off he also saw the cat that was perched on the back of the horse and he frowned, Tialyn had a cat like that as well. When the voice from inside the hood addressed Joanna as 'Captain' he nearly dropped his sword. That was Tialyn's voice...but no....Tialyn had been killed by crocodile Lycans.....Then the slight figure shoved back her hood and threw her cloak back and he saw that it was Tialyn...but something wasn't right, she was wearing an entirely different uniform to theirs and she looked just as confused and wary as they probably did. "Tialyn, is that you?" He asked, the confusion in his voice quite plain.

Sephira was the first to react, which given her status as healer was understandable...she had to react quickly to injuries, and from the tears now flowing down the other Elviri's face, Tialyn wondered if she had an injury she couldn't feel.

"Tialyn? Is that you? No...it can't be...you're.....!...Alive?"

"Yes!" Tialyn cried out, wondering if the team already knew about the were-panthers...wondering if Reece had made it, or didn't, ahead of her and the team had thought she was dead, too. Tialyn still didn't know how she'd gotten to town from out in the country. "Yes, but Reece might still be in danger, Sephira! Have you seen him? Has he come back yet?"

Tialyn was nearly frantic. She didn't know why the strange man was standing so close to Jo, but didn't have time to think about that.

"Tialyn, is that you?" Vincent asked her, looking confused. The big daywalker vampire didn't often look confused.

"Of course, Vincent," Tialyn said. "But we must hurry...the were-panthers are coming quickly," she explained, turning to Jo. "You sent us to find them...but they found us first! Where's Kat, she split off from us to check another area."

Joanna had lifted her sword when a bright flash of white light appeared in front of the patrol and a female rider on a very familiar horse complete with an equally familiar cat slipped off it. She recognised the voice and couldn't believe it. Her new rank within Guardian Unit was indeed 'captain' but she'd yet to start officially using it yet. But the identity of the rider was confirmed when she threw back her hood and revealed her face and uniform. She immediately caught the differences between her uniform and the ones Jo and her Unit wore as well as the different emblem.

There was also something out about the way Tialyn now held herself but she couldn't quite put her finger on what those differences were. Sephira and Vincent responded quicker than she did which finally prompted Tialyn to speak more. Unfortunately talking about Reece and Kat and speaking of a danger from were-panthers simply confused Joanna further. "Tialyn." The words were difficult to speak as she sought to get her emotions under control. "I don't understand. What were-panthers are you talking about?" It felt like she was fumbling but she was aware she had to focus on potential threats first. That included Tialyn. She had no idea what was going on and she didn't like it. Automatically she still held her sword ready to strike.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Graayth snarled in surprise when the bright flash of light appeared and a rider hurtled through. His surprise only grew when the rider spoke and addressed Joanna as 'captain' before throwing back her cloak and hood to reveal herself to be Tialyn-yet not quite. He too immediately noticed the differences. He was as confused as the others but remained calm when she confirmed her identity and started mentioning names and events that simply weren't accurate. "How have you managed to come back from the dead?" Graayth asked bluntly and quickly.
Talyn moved back beside Jo once it appeared this Tialyn didn't post a threat. She answered Vincent and Sephira, then asked about people he had never heard of. Who was this 'Kat' and 'Reece'? He kept his hand near his sword and Jo answered Tialyn with some questions of her own and Graayth just bluntly asked her how she came back from the dead. He was very interested to know that himself. He absently reached over and took Jo by the hand as they waited for the Elviri to answer.
"
Yes, but Reece might still be in danger, Sephira! Have you seen him? Has he come back yet?
Sephira just got even more confused when Tialyn mentioned Reece, and then Kat, two of the team who left Delmi a long time ago. Not only was her uniform different, but so apparently was her memories. Sephira swiped at the tears in her eyes and studied Tialyn closely. The resemblance was remarkable, but there were still significant differences in this Tialyn. It had hit her quite hard when the crocodile had torn her friend to pieces, and now seeing her like this was like an ice-cold bucket of water being thrown on her. She heard Graayth just come out and bluntly ask how she came back from the dead, as he was always blunt and Sephira did her best to get her tumbling emotions under control while she waited for Tialyn, or whoever she was, to answer.
Vincent listened as Tialyn, or whoever she was, asked about people who hadn't been part of their group for several years now. Everything was looking very surreal to him, who had seen much in his, admittedly short for a vampire, vampire lifespan. Certainly not nearly as much as Graayth had seen, and yet the werewolf looked as confused as any of them and asked her straight out how she had come back from the dead.
"I'd like to know that myself." Vincent said. "You look like Tialyn, yet you're not quite the Tialyn that I remember, before she was killed several months ago."
"Tialyn. I don't understand. What were-panthers are you talking about?"
Shaking her head, Tialyn watched Joanna nearly brandish her sword as if to strike. Tialyn's eyes opened wide in shock. It was then she noticed the different uniforms. Only a few moments had passed, but it had taken her that long to begin to see more and more differences.
But when Graayth asked how she'd come back from the dead, Tialyn's stepped back against Morning Star in utter bewilderment, her hand over her heart.
"What?" she whispered harshly. Suddenly Tialyn remembered the bright light and black rip in the air in front of her back on the road. The vision, the memory was slowly coming back to her.
"I'd like to know that myself. You look like Tialyn, yet you're not quite the Tialyn that I remember, before she was killed several months ago."
"Vincent? What are you saying? I don't understand! I'm Tialyn Maern."
The white-haired Elviri, her hair spilling over her shoulders raked her fingers through her hair, still holding the horse's reins. Yamanu was still crouched down on the hindquarters of the horse, but now the cat was silent, watching with bright green eyes. When Tialyn raised her hands, the Kilairi gun that all Guardian Unit team members wore at their sides was revealed. Something was horribly wrong...Tialyn now realized something had happened when she rode Morning Star through the black rip. Delmi looked similar, even in the darkness, but it seemed more primitive somehow. And none of the team members in front of her seemed properly armed.
"Where am I?" she suddenly asked Jo, and glanced at the others. "Captain, please. I think something has happened. I don't think I'm where I am supposed to be." Tialyn had no idea how she knew this. "I mean no harm to anyone. Is there a Kilairi seer back at headquarters, they say they can see into different worlds but their theory isn't very well accepted yet. I...I just want to go home."
Joanna's eyes flickered towards the Kilairi weapon now revealed at Tialyn's side. She recognised it-sort of. It looked like the weapons that were being studied and and replicated by Sandesinan blacksmiths and alchemists. Working prototypes had been successfully constucted but they were still in testing phases. It would be months before they were to be distributed to law enforcement and military forces. Finally something finally made sense to Jo when Tialyn mentioned other worlds. She knew well that demons came from another dimension. But this Tialyn didn't look like any demon that she had ever encountered or read about. She wasn't quite sure what was going on still.
Were there other dimensions besides the demon realm? This was beyond Joanna's level of education and knowledge and she was struggling to understand. "Kilairi? They're still rebuilding and forming their own small nation out in the deep forests. They've been flocking here from all over since they came back from the Nane realm. We have little contact with them other than to trade and maintain diplomatic relations." She lowered her sword but still stayed prepared for any unexpected movements. "But we could seek them out if it'll help understand what just happened once the situation involving the undead has been resolved or at least contained." Jo glanced over at Arjhay. "Unless the Professor here can give us some insight."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Graayth frowned when Tialyn mentioned the possibility that she was another world. She didn't seem to be a demon from their realm but the started to wonder about the possibility that there were other dimensions besides the ones that the demons came from and that the Nanes had been sent to. Her memories and experiences seemed to be similar yet different. He didn't need to say anything further at this moment as Joanna seemed to have finally regained her senses and taking charge once more.

As the group prepared to resume their patrol, the dark of the night was split by earthly lightning and the stillness of the air broke with the thunder of hoofbeats. A white horse appeared as if from nowhere and reared up. The Professor jumped backward in surprise, raising his walking stick reflexively. When the rider dismounted and revealed herself to be Tialyn, he gasped in surprise-- nothing in his long life had ever shocked him like this. "Great heavens! Great heavens!" he said. "Is necromancy capable of this? Dear girl, it is good to see you alive again!"

A great wave of dizziness crashed upon Eru as the cloaked rider revealed herself to be Tialyn, and her knees went weak and watery. "Tialyn?" she gasped, choking. "You're back? You're okay? I'm so sorry. It was my fault, it was all my fault...."  Then her legs gave out and she fainted dead away on the street.

"Just a moment," Arjhay replied. "We seem to have a little problem."  He went to Eru's side and lifted her head a bit up off the street. "Grad students have a habit of nodding off at the most inopportune times. Does anybody have a spot of water?"

Joanna looked over when she heard a thump and saw that Eru had fainted after telling Tialyn that it was her fault the one they knew had died. Instinctively she looked towards Sephira and Gaelan and gestured towards Eru. "Oh dear. You'd better check on her and check she hasn't hurt herself during the fall." She instructed even though she knew that Lycans had advanced healing abilities and any injuries should heal themselves. Even as she reached for her own flask of water, Graayth had already beaten her to it by walking over to Arjhay and handed him his flask of water.

For the moment Tialyn didn't say anything when Jo mentioned the Kilairi coming back from the Nane realm, that just made her assumption that she'd somehow stumbled into another world, a duplicate of hers more evident. The Kilairi had always been a part of the races since forever...Hume, Elviri, Kilairi, there was no way they were just beginning to build their own nation. They had won their war with the Nanes eons ago. She merely nodded when Joanna said they could seek the Kilairi out...that meant there were no Kilairi in the Guardian hunting units.

"Thank you," she said quietly, now just standing and waiting to see what would happen to her. There was nothing she could do at the moment.

Then the Professor...well, this Professor anyway...made it clear he was glad to see Tialyn. It was hard to think of herself as dead but it seemed that these people had lost her...the other...Tialyn shook her head. She still couldn't quite grasp what had happened, and didn't want to dwell on it too much just yet. She was coming down from the adrenaline and a feeling of exhaustion was washing over her.

Of course leave it to Eru...sweet, funny, dramatic Eru...to do something like faint. Tialyn remained where she was, although she was most concerned...even if she didn't know this Eru, but didn't she?...she didn't want to startle anyone into thinking she was attacking.

Sephira listened as Tialyn explained, mentioning things that just never happened. It supported her final claim that she didn't belong there, and Sephira frowned. Were there really other worlds like Sandesina with copies of them all? The same, yet different? It was beginning to look that way.Then Tialyn threw her cloak completely back and she saw the Kilairi firearm she carried, they hadn't even gone out of testing here...

Then Eru fainted and Sephira hurried over when Jo motioned to her. She knelt down and pulled a bottle of smelling salts out of her pack, uncorked it and waved them under the young were's nose after ascertaining that she had no injuries. "Come on Eru." She said. "Wake up."

___________________

Vincent folded his arms and listened as Tialyn related things that did not happen here. Could there really be other Sandesinas where duplicates of them lived there lives in a similar, yet different fashion? He didn't want to think that other versions of him had been turned into vampires too, or that some of them may have turned evil, he didn't want to think about that at all, but it was beginning to look that way. If the demons could have their own separate realms then it stood to reason that just maybe people lived in other realms too. He'd had a pretty good education in the time that he came from, but there had never been any mention.of other, duplicate worlds. What sealed it was the firearm that Tialyn was carrying, theirs hadn't gone out of testing yet.
______________________

Talyn stood by quietly holding Jo's hand as she talked to Tialyn. He was having a hard time believing that another realm existed, one where he obviously wasn't part of the group, or Jo. He didn't like that, he'd fallen hard for her not long after they'd met and now he couldn't imagine not having her in his life, especially now that she was having their child. That thought made him glance softly at his mate's tummy before glancing back at Tialyn.

"Um, I'm Talyn." He said to Tialyn. "We obviously don't know each other over...wherever it is you're from"

Tialyn smiled faintly as the man who'd protected Jo...his Jo...approached her, grateful for the show of not being afraid of her.

"Hello, Tayln," she answered quietly, patting Morning Star's flank, although the gesture was more for her as the horse was now standing still. Tialyn had calmed down now, as there was nothing to be done at the moment about her situation.

"And thank you," she added meaning his kindness. "I guess...I guess I'm from Delmi," she said with a sigh, "just not this one. And, no, I'm afraid we don't know each other. You're not...well, you know. I'm afraid of how much is different over here...wherever here is."

Joanna was overcoming the shock at seeing Tialyn-a version of Tialyn anyway alive and well apparently from a version of Sandesina that was similar to this one but not quite the same. She did want to help her get back home but she had no idea on how that could be accomplished. She doubted the Professor would know how or even have a theory about it. Their best plan was to go to the Kilairi and ask them if they knew how but was preparing for the idea that Tialyn couldn't return home. Which would mean she'd have to make a place for herself here. Provided she really was a Tialyn and not a demon with a clever story taking on her appearance, or something else equally sinister that is. She looked over gratefully at Talyn for showing that he wasn't afraid. She wondered if her counterpart was anything like her and felt a little sympathy that she hadn't found her own version.

"Well, it looks like there are numerous similarities at least." Jo said. "You're clearly from a Guardian Unit yourself against supernatural threats to the population. Our teams are a little different. For example our Kat left the group with a passing lycan pack to be with her own kind. Reece was transferred to another city and Breanna if you know her is on our secondary team under the command of Khazar." While she was explaining a few differences based on what Tialyn had been saying she thought about what to do with her in the meantime. And she made her decision. "At the moment we're on patrol after being attacked by a group of undead. We're making sure Delmi is safe for tonight before checking the graveyard tomorrow as we think a necromancer might be involved. If you like, you can join us for the patrol and I can set you up with some quarters at the HQ when we get back while we figure out if there is a way to help you." She offered.

Even as Jo reached for her own flask of water, Graayth had already beaten her to it by walking over to Arjhay and handed him his flask of water.

"Thank you, big fellow," said the Professor. He took the flask and put it to Eru's lips, but the water just dribbled down her chin; he paused, thinking over what to do next, when Sephira arrived with her smelling salts. He stood up, leaving his student in the hands of the expert.

"Now then," he said. "Despite my initial impression, this is clearly not the result of necromancy. I'm afraid I'm at a bit of a loss. Well, that's not entirely true. There have long been discussions in the philosophical hall at Theseus-- that's the place where no idea is too crazy to not require evidence-- about something called the 'Many Realms Hypothesis.' In this theory, which I am now taking much more seriously, the world is like a folk song which has slightly different lyrics in different towns. There are many, perhaps infinite, variations, where circumstances differ. We may have different lives or different relationships. Some differences may be minor, like having or not having a beard-- some differences may be major, like being alive... or dead."

He rubbed his chin, as if just noticing that he was clean shaven. "But what concerns me is what caused this sudden mixing between the realms. Will it happen again? Will it get worse?  I do not like it."

"Come on Eru." Sephira said. "Wake up."

Eru slowly began to stir, her eyes flickering, and she grimaced at the smelling salts. She slowly sat up, her eyes going back and forth between the Professor and Tialyn as she listened.

"So she's not really our friend?" she asked. "Tialyn is still dead?"

"Well, I wouldn't say she isn't our friend." Sephira said, putting up the smelling salts once rhe young girl sat up. "But yes, the Tialyn from this world is still dead."

She stood and walked over to Tialyn and smiled faintly at her. "I'm sorry about before, but as you can see, your appearance has shocked us all, especially me. See, it was in defense of my home town that she died. Crocodile lycans had overrun it and it was one of them that killed her, I saw it with my own eyes, we all did." She swiped at a few remaining tears and looked the new Tialyn up and down. "Of course we will do everything in our power to get you back to your rightful home."

"Well, it looks like there are numerous similarities at least. You're clearly from a Guardian Unit yourself against supernatural threats to the population. Our teams are a little different."

Standing with the group in the dark, Tialyn listened as Jo explained a little about where some of the team members had gone that the Elviri had asked about. It saddened her to know that Kat had left, although whether she and the were-panthress were friends here or not, Tialyn didn't know. And Reece? Surely he wouldn't have left had they meant to the other what she and her Reece had back...well, home.

When the Captain...Jo, offered her a temporary spot on the Guardian Unit here, Tialyn nodded. "I'd like to help you if I can, yes," she answered. "And I'd appreciate any help you can offer to get me back. I know everyone will be worried," Tialyn paused, "but since there's nothing I can do about that now, I will help with the undead problem and accept your offer of a place to stay."

The Elviri was a soldier, and if there was a job to be done then she was going to do her best to assist. Crying wouldn't help and worrying would only make things worse, so she would join the team and work to keep her mind off the situation.

Tialyn turned her attention to Professor Arjhay and his 'Many Realms Hypothesis'. When he was finished Tialyn added, "That's basically what the Kilairi think as well, only they call it something different. Multiple worlds stacked on top of each other, all with varying degrees of similarities and differences.

Tialyn glanced at Jo, Tayln, and Vincent with a shrug. "Like I said not too many people believe them, but apparently the Kilairi might be right. As for how it happened, I have no idea."

When Sephira joined them, Tialyn could see that Eru seemed to be alright. She appreciated Sephira's words, and the explanation of how their Tialyn died saddened her. At least the Tialyn here had been loved it seemed like. "Thank you for your offer to help me get back. You're just as kind here as you are...well, as my Sephira is," she commented.

Joanna nodded. "All right, thank you Tialyn." She was glad when Tialyn accepted her offer of a temporary place within the Guardian Unit. It was somehow unsettling still that this person was so much like the friend that they'd lost while protecting Luanda from the were-crocodiles. She was the same person yet she wasn't. Despite many years fighting supernatural threats, demons and monsters from another realm Jo was having difficulty mentally adjusting to this new Tialyn's presence. "Let's resume our patrol." She instructed once Eru was back on her feet and steady. "The Kilairi here won their war with the Nanes by banishing them to another dimension. Only they trapped themselves there too. We corrected that a while back and they've been resettling here. I'm hoping that they will know how to return you home." Jo explained while she walked with the others, keeping an eye on their surroundings.

After recovering his voice from the shock of undead walking round the streets of Delmi it soon left him again when Tialyn appeared. Darryl had no idea who she was, only a memory of Nissa telling him about a member of the team who was recently lost. The Professor's theory of alternate universes was lost on him as was the idea that there might be another Darryl somewhere doing something different. It was all a little weird. Tialyn's world had seers too, or at least it sounded like there were more of them then there were here. He wondered if Tialyn could tell him more about this supposed talent for prophecy he might have. He wondered but he still couldn't speak.

Sephira returned to patrolling once Jo stepped out again. She was still very unsettled still, seeing her friend again after witnessing her being torn apart had shaken her quite badly. However, she knew that Tialyn must also be very shaken as well. For instance, did she leave someone behind? Had she even found someone? Did they have children? The questions were endless. She knew if it had happened to her then she would do anything in her power to get back where she belonged, back to Gaelan and her friends. She continued to glance around warily and walk close to her mate as they continued their patrol.

Talyn walked alongside Jo once they started their patrol again and he kept a lookout for any more undead out there. He supposed he wasn't as affected by the return of Tialyn as most of the others seemed to be because he didn't know the one who died here. The biggest question on his mind was what caused that opening to appear between their two worlds, and was it a coincidence that it happened on the same night that the undead started appearing?.

He leaned over to Jo so he could speak softly and not disturb the others. "Do you think it's just a coincidence that the opening appeared right where those undead attacked us or am I just being paranoid?" He asked her.

Vincent continued their patrol deep in thought. He was thinking about how that hole appeared almost on top of where the undead attacked them and he wondered if the two were related. Graayth had said that it took a lot of psionic power to raise the dead, either through being a very strong psion, using a storage crystal or being backed by demon would also give one the power. The act was so unnatural that he was thinking that no one would be patient enough to bother with a storage crystal, and it would have to ba a big one, in his mind, so that just left either a very strong psion or one backed by a demon, both of which bothered him greatly

His ears picked up the question that Talyn asked Joanna and he waited to see whether she would have the same idea that he had.
