For those who don't know, hurricane Irene caused severe flooding in many rural areas of the northeast.  Much of the devastation affected farmland, destroying crops, carrying away livestock, and destroying barns and feed.  These are areas where the local economy is based on agriculture.  When harvest time comes this fall in many places, there will simply be nothing left to harvest.   You can read more about the destruction from hurricane Irene in this thread, (most of the aftermath info starts on page 3).

This sunday, Sep 25, a number of restaurants in NYC will donate a portion of that day's sales to helping farms in upstate NY get back on their feet.  So if you are in New York City this weekend, you can help out by eating out!    See the following links for the latest list of participating restaurants.

On September 25, 2011, participating New York City restaurants will give up to 10% of their sales to Just Food and GrowNYC to benefit NY area farmers hard hit by the hurricane. We hope you’ll make reservations, eat and drink heartily, and check back here for updates on new participants and details.

Great idea!

Restaurants in Houston do something similar for several weeks in August every year to raise funds for the Houston Food Bank and it is always a huge success.

What a great idea!  I wonder if some of the NYC themed restaurants around the country might take part.  I'll check a local place or two.
