Earth Exodus Fleet...Introduction

Adrian tried not to stare too much at Shawntee as she answered his question. "I'm a scientist." He admitted. "I specialise in the fields of alien biology and botany. That does mean studying the forms of alien life we come across but for the most part I'm researching how earth-based plants interact with alien bacteria...." He paused. He'd almost done it again. Rambling on about his job. It was time to change the subject slightly before her eyes started glazing over. Adrian looked over her again and guessed from her muscle definition and her bearing that she was probably military. "So what about you?" He asked. "Military perhaps?" Adrian ventured his guess.

Hoping she could get up a game of pool with some of the other pilots, Sasha entered the huge rec room. She waved and nodded to military personal her rank and below, and saluted the officers. Serving herself a soda from the machine, Sasha put in an order for a light meal at the counter. Then collapsing into a comfortable chair, she used her comm to send a message to Dakota, letting her brother know she was on call tonight. There was a message from Randy on her comm system, but Sasha didn't want to talk to him right now.
Sasha stretched out her legs and leaned back with a relaxed sigh. She saw Hendrickson eyeing her expectantly from a nearby pool table. Laughing, Sasha waved and called out, "Let me at least relax before I come kick your ass, okay!"
The other pilot laughed, gave her a thumbs up and returned to his current game.

Not that Emma remembered much of Earth, being only two when her parents had come aboard with all the others. Now, having been in space for 30 years, this was all that she remembered. Dakota at least remembered some of living on his reservation, while Sasha had been born here in space. Emma waved at a neighbor as she neared the station and was able to catch the incoming shuttle headed for the city center immediately.

But her, she kept people safe, she flew the nimble little Scorpion fighters and she looked like she spent quite a lot of time in the gym, judging from her musculature. He'd tried not to stare, but he couldn't help himself, she was simply drop-dead gorgeous and she was still standing there talking to him. He drained his beer and put the empty bottle down. He'd never met anyone quite like her before, never really met any of the pilots unless they wandered into his store looking for something to wear, as Shawntee had done a few times when she wanted something special to party in. He found himself wanting to get to know her outside of this bar so he glanced down at her, knowing she'd arrived with Shawntee. "You want to go for a walk or something? It's suddenly too noisy in here." He asked her, though the music in the place wasn't exactly deafening, he just wanted to get outside.
A scientist...she'd figured him for an egghead...a pretty sexy, slightly shy egghead, actually. Shawntee picked up the margarita that the bartender had placed next to her and sipped it, smiling at the way Adrian kept trying not to stare at her, but that was what the dress was designed for. If she got offended by people staring at her chest or legs then she'd never have commissioned or worn the minidress. She found it cute that he started telling her about his job with the plants and bacteria before abruptly switching to her, she also understood, most other women would probably have started looking for other things to look at, but she was actually interested. However he'd asked her a question, so she answered him. "Yeah, I'm military." She confirmed, then pointed over at Kristen. "Me and Kris over there are Scorpion pilots for Red Beta squadron and just came in from patrol. We usually fly together since most of the other pilots are too scared to try to keep up with us. So, let me guess...judging from what you told me and that you had a bad day, I'd say your plants and your bacteria didn't like each other?"

"Food first, ass kicking later Lieutenant" she smiled and sat down opposite her friend "how's life in the fast lane Sasha?"
As a young child Evie had dreamt of piloting her own ship, of flying amongst the stars, but as she grew older she realised that it wasn't for her, she didn't have the right temperament...so she helped out where she could, more often than not she could be found in the kitchen, her mother had been a great cook and had passed those skills down to her only daughter.

Sasha crossed her legs under her in the wide chair as her friend Evie brought over a plate of food...one vegetarian wrap along with apple wedges from the agricultural ship's orchard. "Life is... pretty damn fast," Sasha joked with a grin. Evie knew how fast the Scorpions could fly.
Eying her wrap somewhat suspiciously, Sasha then mock glared at Evie. "You added extra sauce, didn't you?" she asked warningly. "You know that I'll have to run extra laps now, right? You do this to me on purpose," Sasha said, just before taking a huge, appreciative bite of the best ever wrap. Evie's helping out shifts in the kitchen produced amazing results.
"Actually I'm on call right now with part of Red Beta," Sasha explained. "I was hoping to hang out at Stargazer tonight but I pulled duty. We need to get together soon and hang out, I've not seen you since last week...at least outside of the base."

Adrian glanced over at the tall, pretty redhead chatting at the bar when Shawntee pointed her out then looked back at her. He smiled when she confirmed that she was military and was impressed when she told him that she was a Scorpion pilot. Piloting one of those nimble, deadly fighters was a difficult job. They protected civilians like him from harm. Adrian liked the thought of Shawntee protecting him. "That's impressive." He said honestly to her. He was caught by surprise when she returned the topic of conversation to today's work. He searched her face and checked her body language and found no signs of deception and instead he saw genuine interest there. This brought him a little more confidence and he took another sip of his practically-forgotten cider and relaxed a bit. "No." He admitted. "They didn't get along well at all. All of the species I blended them with except the potatoes died. I'm hoping they'll survive though. If they do accept the bacteria they'll grow faster and larger." Which would be beneficial for vegetables grown in a limited space on a ship.

"Well, potatoes always seem to thrive when other things don't." Shawntee said when Adrian told her that only the potatoes seemed to be accepting the bacteria. "I'm a meat and potatoes girl myself, even if it means extra exercise to keep it worked off." Not like her and Kris' friend Sasha, who was a vegetarian. She liked vegetables, but she wanted her meat to go with them. She took another sip of her margarita and regarded Adrian. She could tell he hadn't had a woman ask him about his work, at least not in a long time and she smiled. She enjoyed having conversations beyond the "What's your sign?" crap, or any of the other trashy pickup lines that guys were still using even though they didn't work, at least not on her. "So, what vegetables are you going to try next?" She asked. "And is this bacteria dangerous to people?" She figured not if he was trying to introduce it to vegetables, but it never hurt to ask.

Evie laughed..."just a little, food should be a pleasure Sasha...besides, look at you, all legs and lean muscle" she ran her hands over her generous curves "plenty of padding, keeps you warm on cold nights"
"We need to get together soon and hang out"
"Sounds like a plan, come find me when you get some down time....but now, I have to get back to work and you have to go kick Hendricksons ass"
She helped herself to one of the apple wedges on her friends plate and hurried back to the kitchen.

Adrian considered as he sipped his cider. "I'm almost through testing that strain of bacteria." He admitted. "But I will try it with different varieties of potato and some other vegetables that are quite closely related." Although he paid close attention to whether Shawntee was getting bored and remained alert to prompts to change the topic of conversation he was starting to feel more at ease. "No the bacteria isn't dangerous. Unless one has a compromised immune system already but we keep all our alien samples under a tight quarantine." He assured her. "If, for no other reason than indeed what we're working with IS alien and it's better not to take chances that there might be an adverse reaction that we hadn't foreseen."
Posted 05 October 2011 - 06:49 PM
"Well, that's good to know." Shawntee said when Adrian said the bacteria wasn't dangerous. That they kept it locked up tight was good too. "I hope you have better luck with your next experiments." She finished off her margarita and regarded him. Once he loosened up some, he was quite something. She could tell he loved what he did, which was a bonus, she was well-versed in guys who didn't like what they were doing and spent their time moaning about it instead of doing something about it and that was enough to put her off them fast. "So, you appear to like what you do." She said, smiling at him. "It's refreshing to find someone like that rather than someone who'd rather spend their time whining about how much they hate their job and don't have the cajones to go out and do something about it." She shook her head when the bartender silently asked if she'd like another and pushed her glass towards him so he could take it away, then turned her attention back to Adrian.

Once she'd taken her last bite, Sasha rose easily from the chair...okay, so not so easily as she was slightly full...and marched resolutely toward the pool tables. Hendrickson and the others hollered their approval of her joining the game. As she chose her cue, Sasha noticed a tech bringing in her flight suit and hanging it with the others of the pilots on call. The suits were ready for sliding on if an emergency arose. She watched the tech give her a thumbs up that the repairs were done.
"Alright, show-offs," Sasha said good naturedly. "Rack 'em up and let me show you how it's done. Janie and I are going to do some damage here."
The two guys and other girl laughed. Sasha really wasn't any better than they were but they all enjoyed playing around.

Dakota spent a few moments pointing out the various areas of the club, hinting that if they didn't want to hear the music so loud the second level was somewhat "quieter" although still active and busy, and the separate dining area through the doors on the second level was even more so.
"Mr. Cooper!" a female voice called out. One of the wait staff approached. She was young and new, and not accustomed to calling him Dakota yet. "I'm sorry to bother you, but the kitchen needs you."
"Uh oh, duty calls," Dakota said to Captain Miller. "You two enjoy yourselves, I'll look for you later. I usually make the rounds throughout the night with the bouncers. Keeps me informed, and people know to not cause trouble," Dakota said with a laugh. "Not that many do, but sometimes we get one or two that don't want to be polite."
Dakota gave a departing nod as he headed to the kitchen.

She was just a small child when the Exodus started, so she had disjointed memories of Earth, most of which consisted of playing at her mother's clinic while she worked. As she grew up on the other ship, she'd taken to helping her mother after school and then ended up following in her footsteps and becoming a veterinarian herself and getting the job here on the Washington at their zoo and opening a pet clinic. All in all, she was quite happy with her life, even though she was single, and she fluffed her long, blond hair as she walked towards home, passing through a small park on the way, of which there were many scattered throughout the ship in the civilian areas to give it a more homey feel and she enjoyed the greenery and flowers and knew that it took a lot of work by the groundskeepers to keep them that way. She smiled and nodded at a few other pedestrians who were out as she made her way closer to her place. She knew almost everyone who had a pet in this part of the ship since they brought them to her if they needed anything done, and it reminded her that it was getting time for Darius to bring Jonas in for his checkup. She smiled at that, she hadn't anticipated that the two would bond so quickly when she'd asked him to foster the bird, but it turned out for the best for both of them. Jonas was happy to live with Darius and she knew that Darius would raise him right.

Dr. Lewiston sighed slightly before she answered, she should be use to the extra caution the ship's CO always showed since the mistake on Omicron Six. "Yes Commnder, it is uninhabited and Earth compatible. You can contact the fleet."
Commander Kelly nodded once before signaling his Comm Officer to send the message to the Washington DC. It had been decided long ago that it made sense for the fleet to exit hyperspace at a point between multiple star systems and send out Planetary Explorer ships with Scorpion escorts to these stars instead of the entire fleet going to each one. Most of the time the star systems did not offer a class M planet, but this time it had and one that was uninhabited. Once a planet was found the fleet would devert and perfom extended scans and visits.
"Sir," John Adam, the Washington DC's comm officer on duty said the the second-in-command, "The EFS Galileo has made a positive M class report. Shall I call the Old Man to the bridge?"
Commander Brandon nodded once. "Don't let him hear you call him that, you would end up cleaning Scorpion launch bays for life. Recall all Scorpions and prepare for Jump. Inform all fleet ships that Washington DC will be taking control of all ships for the Jump. Andrea, interlock all fleet ships and set course for the Galileo's location."
Interlock initiated and Jump in twenty minutes. Andrea, the Washington DC's AI responded.
The bridge doors irised open to allow Jerry back in and sat down in the chair Commander Brandon had vacated. "You have command, Sir."
Jerry nodded. "I have command. Andrea status of fleet interlock."
Interlock at 65 percent, total fleet interlock in ten minutes.
Slowly the clock ticked off the minutes. No alarm was sounded since few inside the ships would actually feel anything, only those looking outside would see the stars become black points in a white background..the universe of hyperspace.
Interlock complete and verified, black hole formation in five minutes.
Jerry leaned back and watched the main screen, he had always loved to watch the blackhole form and felt a thrill as the stars seem to rush away from them before inverting colors. He also found it interesting to watch a ship arrive from hyperspace. First a "whitehole" would form and the ship would streak out into normal space followed by the whitehole vanishing in a brilliant flash.
Blackhole formation. Entering hyperspace now.
Multiple blackholes formed in front of the massive fleet of ships and within seconds each ship had seemed to streatch out before vanishing into a blackhole. The area once filled with hundreds of ships was now empty.

Adrian equally silently got a refill for his cider, definately starting to relax more. He didn't drink large amounts of alcohol ever and he didn't intend to tonight. Two or three glasses of cider was his maximum. "Oh yes. And it's not just plants. The non-earth animals we have in the labs and zoo are equally as fascinating." He confirmed with a warm smile. "I love my job and wouldn't swap it for any other career though I admit I had to work long and hard to get there." And it wasn't an exaggeration. He'd had to spend years studying regular biology and botany before he could even start on the alien ones. He was somehow pleased, relieved and happy that Shawntee found him interesting and apparently not like other guys enough not to have walked away from him by now. She was of course absolutely stunning and beautiful but he found himself enjoying her company. "But it must be the same for you." Adrian speculated out loud. "You must enjoy being a Scorpion pilot. I hear it's not an easy career path."

Sasha and the others watched for a moment the flash of white streak past them. "I wonder where the fleet is going?" she asked, although none of them knew.
"Fleet Commander Cray'll be up there directing the flight, I'm sure," Jake answered, forgiving Sasha for screwing up his shot. The sight of hyperspace always sent a chill up his spine. "Him and Andrea. I hope Red Beta is called into duty for whatever it is."
"Well, yeah, that'd be great if it's an uninhabited planet or something exciting," Sasha said, leaning over to take her shot.
"What?" another pilot asked, laughing. "You don't want to be out there engaged in battle? Flying in formation then breaking apart to kick some alien ass?" He made old-fashioned gunshot sounds. "That's not exciting enough for you, Sasha?"
Sasha laughed, but said, "Shut up, Alex. Just play pool. We'll find out when we arrive."

"Hey, Emma!" the bartender called as she neared the bar, waving to the boss's redheaded wife. "Dakota's in the kitchen."
Emma smiled and waved back, then nodded as she headed to see her husband.
