"Yeah, we sure do." Shawntee said with a grin as she walked with Kristen to the Scorpion bay. She climbed into her scorpion with a few minutes to spare and greeted her AI, who informed her that they were ready to launch, then the order was given to launch and then hold for the shuttles. " Acknowledged, hold for shuttles three and four. Here we go, JoJo." She said, holding the fighter in place as she waited for the shuttles to leave the shuttle bay. She hoped the planet would be suitable and that another ship could stop wandering with them and put down roots. She would probably die out here in space herself before they found enough suitable worlds to claim, but she didn't care, she loved being out here and flying her Scorpion.

Jerry nodded slightly at Launch Control. "Order Launch Yellow on Beta deck"

On the Beta launch deck the lights switched to yellow and launch prep crew scattered off the deck. Pilot Carol Reed tapped a few commands into her console on Shuttle One. "Launch Red in two minutes. Standby for launch."

Unlike the Scorpions, which launched under their own powerfull sublight thrusters, the shuttles would be rocketed down a launch tube powered by elecromagnetic fields which would launch the slower shuttles at near Scorpion velocities.

"Launch Red!" Carol remarked as the deck's lights turned blood red and acceleration hit everyone in the shuttles at the same time.Immediately after leaving the launch tubes the shuttles seperated into pairs and gracefully angled toward the planet and were surrounded by Scorpions in seconds.

When shuttles three and four cleared the launch bay Shawntee took her position to escort them to the planet below. She knew her AI was scanning for possible dangers as they flew and she kept pace with the shuttles on one side and grinned when Kris took up a position on the other side of them. Two other members took up position to the fore and rear of the two shuttles and they all headed down to the planet as one, just as they had the last time they found a planet to explore.

Kristen brought her Scorpion into formation with the others around shuttled 3 and 4 as per orders relayed to her by Avuna. She hoped that this planet would prove suitable for colonization so that another ship could settle here and a colony could grow. She had wondered what it would be like to settle down on a planet. Any atmospheric craft she would be available to pilot would be a massive comedown from what she was used to experiencing as a Scorpion pilot but she supposed that so long as she was able to fly she could be happy. Out of habit both human and AI kept an eye out with the sensors for any possible dangers as she flew.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adrian sat aboard shuttle 3, strapped into his seat and rather impatiently waiting for the shuttle ride to end so that he could once again feel ground beneath his feet and a planetary breeze against his skin. And that would just be the start. Analysing a whole planet and all the millions of different species on it took weeks if not years and it was work that he couldn't be happier doing. Especially if Shawntee would be the one piloting the atmospheric crafts between continents and destinations. He couldn't help but smile slightly as he imagined it.
In unison with the other Red Beta Scorpion fighters, Sasha's ship slipped through the forcefield, the sublight thrusters at max for the moment. She angled around with the others to surround and protect shuttles three and four as the larger ships exited the colony ship. It was amazing how in seconds the space around her had been filled with over a thousand ships as the other crafts exited hyperspace.
Sasha spotted Janie flying with Blue Omega and shuttles one and two, then saw Jake take up position nearby with her. She smiled to herself.
"All systems in order?" she asked Sammy out of habit. It didn't do to become lax or lazy just because the fighters' AIs were always on alert. Anything could go wrong anytime, it was the pilot's responsibility to watch out for the AI, not really the other way around. Sasha's practiced eye scanned the sensors in front of her.
"Super duper," Sammy replied. "I mean, yes, Lieutenant Cooper, Ma'am."
"Nice try, Sammy," Sasha said, suppressing a grin. She was glad Sammy couldn't actually see her...or could he?
Sasha turned her attention back to the shuttles, fighters, and approaching planet. Discovering habitable planets was one of the most exciting things about her job, that along with everything else really. But the dark-haired young woman wondered what they would find this time.
Steve accelerated slightly ahead of shuttle one as he activated his communications. “Janie, take over here while I scout landing site one for shuttle one.”
“Affirmative Blue Omega One, I have the lead.”
Steve pushed his Scorpion ahead and accelerated to Mach five his eye on the altimeter since it wouldn’t be good to slam into the planet. In seconds he found the landing site and slowed to a near hover, his eyes scanning the site for problems. Athena beat him to the response.
Landing area clear.
“Show off.” Steve mumbled under his breath as he accelerated to the second landing site. Movement below caught his eye so he slowed to get a better look. Below a massive herd of mammals ran in a huge wave trying to escape the sound his Scorpion made as it flew over them.
Jerry let his gaze wander around the bridge and stopped at the long range communications station. The officer at the station had suddenly sat more upright and was taping her console rapidly. Jerry waited patiently for her to act, he didn’t wait long.
“Sir, I have a message coming in on long range hyper-communications, but I don’t think it is meant for us. The language is an unknown one but it does sound kind of frantic. I have double checked it Sir.”
Jerry nodded slightly and kept himself calm. First contacts were always nerve racking, especially since every race they had come across had been decades behind them in technology and this was the first time a message had come over that system.
“Send Mathematical Language Table and basic Geometry Chart.”
“Yes, sir, Basic Communication Program is sent.”
“Andrea, prepare for possible response and…”
Response received. Translation in process.
Jerry mentally calculated the possible distance based on how fast the message had been received and figured it was about ten light years. If it was a distress call, he hoped Andrea could make a quick translation.
She did.
Translation complete. Message reads: Any ship in our area. This is the Zomican sightseeing  ship Starlifter. We are under attack from Veetra huntships. Can you help?
Message repeats now.
“Launch Green Delta and Gold Theta squadrons to take over for Blue Omega and Red Beta. Send Blue Omega and Red Beta to the Starlifter’s location and tell them to be ready for anything.” Jerry barked as he tapped his console. “Washington DC Command to Lexington, Claire prepare to take command of the fleet.”
Jerry waited for responses and wondered what the hell a Veetra was.
"Prepare to leave the fleet. Excalibur will be with us."
Shawntee tilted her head to the side when she received orders to switch with Gold Theta, then go check out a distress call. "Veetra?" She wondered aloud as she acknowledged the new orders and veered off when she saw her replacement had arrived. "I wonder what they are and why they're attacking a sightseeing ship."
"I haven't a clue." JoJo said as Shawntee veered off to regroup with Red Beta so they could go check out the distress call. "Maybe they're some kind of pirates."
"Space pirates, huh?" Shawntee said, slightly amused. "Then we better see about making them walk the plank." She waited while the rest of Red Beta regrouped, then waited for the signal from their commander to head out. So far, none of the aliens they'd run across had been close technologically to humans, but that didn't mean there weren't any out there and it didn't pay to take any mission too lightly.
"Walk the plank...searching database...right, a punishment for prisoners in ancient times when ships sailed on the water." JoJo said. "You were talking figuratively then."
Kristen veered off to match Shawntee's course as they recieved new orders to switch out with Gold Theta and go answer a distress call. Avuna acknowledged the new orders automatically and answered Kristen's question before the human pilot could even ask it. "There is nothing on my database about the Veetra. It is unknown why they would be attacking a sight-seeing ship." Kristen smiled slightly. "Pirates would be my first guess but even that is a little odd. Cargo vessels make far better targets. I suppose they could be slavers but we'll find out soon enough." She remarked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Claire straightened in her chair when she recieved the translated distress call and orders from Jerry. "Acknowledged, Washington DC." She confirmed.

Steve switched frequencies to a channel that connected him to his squad and Red Beta, as senior pilot he would be command over the mission.

"Okay team, we will drop out hyperspace one light minute from the coordinates given. I want to see what is going on and not drop into a war blind. Stand by for team jump. Five....four......three....two.....jump!"

As one the twenty Scorpions streaked into the opened black hole and vanished as it closed with a flash of energy.

____________________________________________________________________

Jerry watched the bridge staff prepare for their jump and mentally calculated how long it would take. His calculations told him the Scorpions would be without their support for at least ten minutes. That could be a lifetime in a battle situation.

OUT OF CHARACTER: Okay, this thread will now be for our scientists to continue discovering things about the new planet and a new thread will be started for our brave pilots.

Scientist characters....have fun and create ant kind of life you want (no intelligent life on this planet). We expect all types so have fun!

IC: Commander Brian Bearclaw followed all aspects of his ship, the EFS London, as they prepared for possible landing. Landing a ten mile long ship wasn't easy, even with the anti-grav systems. Once down, the ship would be home while a city was built.

Brian longed to once again feel soil under him as his ancestors had.

Captain Rudy Smith followed shuttle one through the atmosphere and closer to the landing site. She had to work to stay focused on the landing shuttle since her thoughts kept wondering what Blue Omega and Red Beta might be running into. Movement on the ground caught her eye and she swiveled her head to the left and relaxed at the sight of a large herd of animals running from the sound of the shuttles.

"Relax Rudy," She said to herself, "you're letting your imagination run wild.

Below, shuttle one settled onto the grassy opening in the forest. Steam hissed from the cooling system as the shuttle vented heat buildup from entry into the atmosphere. The door slid open to let the scientists and security team out.

Adrian was waiting impatiently in his seat for the shuttle to land. He was wondering what kind of emergency had caused the switching out of the the Scorpion squadrons and his mind was distracted briefly with thoughts of Shawntee and the dangers she could be facing. Then he felt the jolt as the shuttle landed and his mind focused on gathering up his scanner and analysis kit. By the time the airlocks opened to let the scientists and soldiers out Adrian was ready. He walked over to the airlock and peered outside at the planet but had the sense to allow some of their security out first then he could begin his work.

Corven was pacing the deck in flight operations.  He had never wanted to be out on operations more than he did at that moment.  Once more he cursed himself for managing to break his wrist.  He had an appointment with the doctor that very afternoon to have the cast removed just too late to take part with the rest of the Scorpions.

Sargent Kelly O'Brian stepped off shuttle one and motioned his team of six to fan out. He didn't look to see if they obeyed, he trusted them to. They did, with their M95 weapons at the ready. Kelly scanned the immediate area and seeing nothing dangerous, he turned his attention to the distance. A slow sweep brought his attention to a herd of large animals far off, but they seemed to be moving away from them. He turned to the shuttle. "All clear."

Kelly sighed slightly, all quiet here it seemed but he knew that quiet didn't always last.

Andrea's sensors covered almost all areas of the Washington DC and she watched Corven on the flight deck.

Excuse me pilot Corven, the flight deck might not be the best place for excercising at this time. Might I suggest one of the parks?

Sir, Blue Omega squadron reports they are under attack and out numbered.

"Thank you Andrea. All hands prepare for jump. Red alert!"

Across the massive starship the red alert klaxon began to souond.

Sargent Jack Smith stepped onto the planet's surface and motioned his team to spread out. After just a few minutes his team reported no problems so Jack reported back to the shuttle.

"Okay you eggheads, this place is your playland. Let my men know if you see or hear anything that worries you."

Jack stayed near the shuttle as his team began to patrol several meters from the shuttle. Off in the distance he could see a herd of large animals graxing on the slightly blue tinted grass. Since they seemed to take no interest, he put them in the back of his mind for the moment but not forgotten since even Earth's cattle could be a danger if large herds paniced. He motioned two of his team to check out the nearby woods before contacting the fleet.

Adrian acknowledged Sargent Smith and immediately and cautiously moved towards the herd of animals grazing on the blue-tinted grass. When they started taking notice of him, eying him with a mixture of curiousity and caution he stopped and began taking photos of them and taking several notes on his voice recorder on their phenotypical features and possible differences between the males and females of the herd. Eventually capturing one and studying it would be necessary along with taking a blood sample but that could wait.

The local flora needed to be checked first to see if it would be compatible with Terran animals. Or at least compatible enough if the introduction of a local bacteria or a bit of genetic tweaking would make them compatible. Nevertheless Adrian took several scans of the herd then snapped on a pair of gloves before taking a sample of the animal dung lying nearby. Genetic information about the animals could be obtained from it. After sealing the sample he carefully backed away from the herd before going about the process of scanning and taking grass and soil samples.

Corven's cast was finally removed, the doctor had assured him that his wrist was as good as before and had also given him a sheet of exercises to do to strengthen it.  He was too late to join the rest of the squadron but he sat quietly in the flight control centre listening and watching what was going on.

Adrian felt a measure of relief after initial scans on the various grasses around the landing zone indicated that they were compatible with Terran animals although introducing a native bacteria to their digestive systems would aid in the adaptation to this new planet. He was cautiously encouraged that this world would be suitable for colonisation but there was still much more work to be done before he would say that out loud with any degree of confidence. With sufficent grass, soil, bacteria and insect samples collected for the moment Adrian turned his attention to the forest. This would take quite a few hours of work but nevertheless he got stuck in with enthusiasm, taking scans and collecting samples.

Darius put the finishing touches on Margaret's commissioned outfit with a sigh. The woman was a PITA to work with, but she paid well. She had changed the design and added in things several times and he was lucky he didn't have to start over each time she decided she wanted something else. It didn't help that she tended towards gaudy, and how she pulled it off sometimes astounded him. This outfit was no different, and he made a face as he put it on a hanger and hung it up before he contacted her to come and look at it. If she wanted anything else done to it she was going to have to get someone else, because, no matter how much she paid, he was darn tired of the thing.

As he waited for her, he couldn't help but wonder how Kristen was, coming to the aid of another ship being attacked was never a good thing and he hoped whatever it was, they could take care of it and get back.
