On the Beta launch deck the lights switched to yellow and launch prep crew scattered off the deck. Pilot Carol Reed tapped a few commands into her console on Shuttle One. "Launch Red in two minutes. Standby for launch."
Unlike the Scorpions, which launched under their own powerfull sublight thrusters, the shuttles would be rocketed down a launch tube powered by elecromagnetic fields which would launch the slower shuttles at near Scorpion velocities.
"Launch Red!" Carol remarked as the deck's lights turned blood red and acceleration hit everyone in the shuttles at the same time.Immediately after leaving the launch tubes the shuttles seperated into pairs and gracefully angled toward the planet and were surrounded by Scorpions in seconds.

Adrian sat aboard shuttle 3, strapped into his seat and rather impatiently waiting for the shuttle ride to end so that he could once again feel ground beneath his feet and a planetary breeze against his skin. And that would just be the start. Analysing a whole planet and all the millions of different species on it took weeks if not years and it was work that he couldn't be happier doing. Especially if Shawntee would be the one piloting the atmospheric crafts between continents and destinations. He couldn't help but smile slightly as he imagined it.

Sasha spotted Janie flying with Blue Omega and shuttles one and two, then saw Jake take up position nearby with her. She smiled to herself.
"All systems in order?" she asked Sammy out of habit. It didn't do to become lax or lazy just because the fighters' AIs were always on alert. Anything could go wrong anytime, it was the pilot's responsibility to watch out for the AI, not really the other way around. Sasha's practiced eye scanned the sensors in front of her.
"Super duper," Sammy replied. "I mean, yes, Lieutenant Cooper, Ma'am."
"Nice try, Sammy," Sasha said, suppressing a grin. She was glad Sammy couldn't actually see her...or could he?
Sasha turned her attention back to the shuttles, fighters, and approaching planet. Discovering habitable planets was one of the most exciting things about her job, that along with everything else really. But the dark-haired young woman wondered what they would find this time.

“Affirmative Blue Omega One, I have the lead.”
Steve pushed his Scorpion ahead and accelerated to Mach five his eye on the altimeter since it wouldn’t be good to slam into the planet. In seconds he found the landing site and slowed to a near hover, his eyes scanning the site for problems. Athena beat him to the response.
Landing area clear.
“Show off.” Steve mumbled under his breath as he accelerated to the second landing site. Movement below caught his eye so he slowed to get a better look. Below a massive herd of mammals ran in a huge wave trying to escape the sound his Scorpion made as it flew over them.
Jerry let his gaze wander around the bridge and stopped at the long range communications station. The officer at the station had suddenly sat more upright and was taping her console rapidly. Jerry waited patiently for her to act, he didn’t wait long.
“Sir, I have a message coming in on long range hyper-communications, but I don’t think it is meant for us. The language is an unknown one but it does sound kind of frantic. I have double checked it Sir.”
Jerry nodded slightly and kept himself calm. First contacts were always nerve racking, especially since every race they had come across had been decades behind them in technology and this was the first time a message had come over that system.
“Send Mathematical Language Table and basic Geometry Chart.”
“Yes, sir, Basic Communication Program is sent.”
“Andrea, prepare for possible response and…”
Response received. Translation in process.
Jerry mentally calculated the possible distance based on how fast the message had been received and figured it was about ten light years. If it was a distress call, he hoped Andrea could make a quick translation.
Translation complete. Message reads: Any ship in our area. This is the Zomican sightseeing ship Starlifter. We are under attack from Veetra huntships. Can you help?
Message repeats now.
“Launch Green Delta and Gold Theta squadrons to take over for Blue Omega and Red Beta. Send Blue Omega and Red Beta to the Starlifter’s location and tell them to be ready for anything.” Jerry barked as he tapped his console. “Washington DC Command to Lexington, Claire prepare to take command of the fleet.”
Jerry waited for responses and wondered what the hell a Veetra was.
"Prepare to leave the fleet. Excalibur will be with us."

"I haven't a clue." JoJo said as Shawntee veered off to regroup with Red Beta so they could go check out the distress call. "Maybe they're some kind of pirates."
"Space pirates, huh?" Shawntee said, slightly amused. "Then we better see about making them walk the plank." She waited while the rest of Red Beta regrouped, then waited for the signal from their commander to head out. So far, none of the aliens they'd run across had been close technologically to humans, but that didn't mean there weren't any out there and it didn't pay to take any mission too lightly.
"Walk the plank...searching database...right, a punishment for prisoners in ancient times when ships sailed on the water." JoJo said. "You were talking figuratively then."

Claire straightened in her chair when she recieved the translated distress call and orders from Jerry. "Acknowledged, Washington DC." She confirmed.

"Okay team, we will drop out hyperspace one light minute from the coordinates given. I want to see what is going on and not drop into a war blind. Stand by for team jump. Five....four......three....two.....jump!"
As one the twenty Scorpions streaked into the opened black hole and vanished as it closed with a flash of energy.
Jerry watched the bridge staff prepare for their jump and mentally calculated how long it would take. His calculations told him the Scorpions would be without their support for at least ten minutes. That could be a lifetime in a battle situation.
OUT OF CHARACTER: Okay, this thread will now be for our scientists to continue discovering things about the new planet and a new thread will be started for our brave pilots.
Scientist characters....have fun and create ant kind of life you want (no intelligent life on this planet). We expect all types so have fun!
IC: Commander Brian Bearclaw followed all aspects of his ship, the EFS London, as they prepared for possible landing. Landing a ten mile long ship wasn't easy, even with the anti-grav systems. Once down, the ship would be home while a city was built.
Brian longed to once again feel soil under him as his ancestors had.

"Relax Rudy," She said to herself, "you're letting your imagination run wild.
Below, shuttle one settled onto the grassy opening in the forest. Steam hissed from the cooling system as the shuttle vented heat buildup from entry into the atmosphere. The door slid open to let the scientists and security team out.

Kelly sighed slightly, all quiet here it seemed but he knew that quiet didn't always last.

Excuse me pilot Corven, the flight deck might not be the best place for excercising at this time. Might I suggest one of the parks?

"Thank you Andrea. All hands prepare for jump. Red alert!"
Across the massive starship the red alert klaxon began to souond.

"Okay you eggheads, this place is your playland. Let my men know if you see or hear anything that worries you."
Jack stayed near the shuttle as his team began to patrol several meters from the shuttle. Off in the distance he could see a herd of large animals graxing on the slightly blue tinted grass. Since they seemed to take no interest, he put them in the back of his mind for the moment but not forgotten since even Earth's cattle could be a danger if large herds paniced. He motioned two of his team to check out the nearby woods before contacting the fleet.

The local flora needed to be checked first to see if it would be compatible with Terran animals. Or at least compatible enough if the introduction of a local bacteria or a bit of genetic tweaking would make them compatible. Nevertheless Adrian took several scans of the herd then snapped on a pair of gloves before taking a sample of the animal dung lying nearby. Genetic information about the animals could be obtained from it. After sealing the sample he carefully backed away from the herd before going about the process of scanning and taking grass and soil samples.

As he waited for her, he couldn't help but wonder how Kristen was, coming to the aid of another ship being attacked was never a good thing and he hoped whatever it was, they could take care of it and get back.
