^ "If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence." -- Bertrand Russell

I've found that Bertrand Russell was optimistic. People will often refuse to believe things that don't fit into their preconceived notions even when the evidence is overwhelming.

Anyway, the union members protesting at the Occupy events presumably have jobs.

As much as I don't care for Bloomberg, I care even less of the misguided idealists blogging outside on the laptops. There are plenty of hotels in NYC. Or they can go home and, I don't know, actully start looking for jobs again. Oh silly me, there I go again!    The cause! The cause! Stick it to the man!

A fair number of my friends have taken part in these protests and only one of us is unemployed.  That one is in medschool.

Just FYI.

thanks, Scott, for adding this as someone who is yet another reliable source that can disprove the "lazy protestors" BS. :)

That isn't proof, it is a statement that cannot be verified.

And just because Fox news says they're all lazy, jobless Socialists doesn't make it so.
Plenty of people have provided proof that there are employed people protesting.  Just
because you keep saying it doesn't make it true.

nicely said, Baldy.

btw, CJ, denying Scott's statement just because you don't want to believe the truth of it?  way to blatantly show your ignorance, not to mention further disprove your baseless accusations.

This is cool! After generators taken, Occupy protesters turn to pedal power:

Quote

Having lost their gas-powered generators, the protestors at Occupy Wall Street are turning to a more eco-friendly alternative: pedal power.

Keegan Stephan, a bike mechanic and environmentalist at the Zuccotti Park site of the protest in New York, has been pedaling a stationary bronze Schwinn bicycle to provide energy for the protesters' encampment. ...

When fully charged--after about 6 hours of pedaling--the battery might provide power for around 100 hours, Stephan estimated. It'll be used to power laptops, cellphones, and other devices being used by the protesters. ...

Friday, police confiscated the gas-powered generators that the protesters--some of whom have slept in the park for more than a month--had been using. The Fire Department has said that storing large amounts of fuel in the park violates fire codes.

That's when Stephan's contraption--joined since Saturday by three other bikes attached to motors that Occupy Boston protestors had shipped down to New York--suddenly came in handy.

It won't power their heaters, but it will let them use their laptops and cell phone cameras to get their message out to the Internet.

good for him helping out the protestors!

still think the owners of those generators should file theft charges against the city and Bloomberg.  :headshake:

Will it power things like electric blankets?

^ It should be able to power some electric blankets if the protestors have them, but I doubt even four of the batteries would provide enough power for an electric blanket for every protestor all through the night.

The forecast is mild for the next 10 days, though obviously thecweather's gonna turn eventually and that will probably impact how many people come to Zucotti park.  They need a strategy to keep this going online.

I'd guess that they are as active on Facebook as several other cities and links to websites set up by each city are available.  There is an occupytogether site but not sure if it's a .com or other.

Plus I know that Occupy Houston said they had a conference--skype, phone, online (can't remember exactly) with many of the participating cities (including one in Spain) sharing experience and ideas.

Plus twitter.

^ If they intend to stay in the park, I'd recommend waterproof, arctic mummy sleeping bags and/or, if they're willing, sleeping two or more people in a bag to share warmth. If they could make a windbreak that Bloomberg and the cops won't tear down, that would also help a lot. Using the power from the bicycle batteries, they might be able to heat some water for hot chocolate by dipping those electrical wire drink heaters into cups of water.

Honestly, though, even in prehistoric times, people had caves and fires to keep them warm in the winter. Camping out in the winter without shelter and a strong source of heat isn't recommended.

I suspect they are going to do it though, somehow. Wall Street is the heart of this movement and I don't think it will be surrendered that easily.

if it wouldn't break people's banks, i'd say buy more generators and disguise them....and if Bloomberg's goons steal them again, make a citizen's arrest for the theft of them.  since there will be plenty of witnesses to the thieving, that makes it easy.

^^^Not sure about that hiding them thing as all the generators I have been around tend to be noisy things.  Not anything more than, say, construction ....but noisy nonetheless.

(I bought a generator shortly after Hurricane Rita and can't forget the noise all over my small town as everyone else had the same idea)

^ okay good point--though i would think in a city as full of hideous noise as New York, no one would notice :p

^^^

I don't know how the noise compares as I've only run it when living in a rural area or small town....and no one around me had power or were running generators too.    Only thing I can compare it too is construction noise.

Construction noise, mixed with sirens, is what they call in NYC white noise music to sleep with.
