This pilot season, there are only a few projects I'm really interested in (based on description, that is) and Last Resort is one.  Has anyone else been reading the coverage on this?

Here's the logline:

Resort revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who, after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, wind up being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation.

It takes place "in the near future."  Shawn Ryan co-created.  Andre Braugher plays the captain.  And Martin Campbell is directing the pilot.

Pilot is shooting in Hawaii, of course.  

Sounds like it could be pretty great, huh?

Is it just me, or is that plot incoherent?

You could do a fine drama about the issues involved in whether to fire the missiles-- that was Crimson Tide, and it was a pretty good movie-- but once you make that decision, I would think the only honorable thing to do would be to go home and face the court martial.

If you don't, not only are you acting nutty and treasonous, but the only way you're getting accepted as a "nation" is if you're making the implicit threat to nuke something if you get disrespected. Which effectively makes the captain and officers terrorists.

Or is this near-future setting going to pose a political picture so different that all of the above somehow isn't true? Because assuming a world anything like our own, I don't see how that idea could be made plausible. Am I missing something?

I assume there would have to be a military coup or some such back home.  Branded traitors, they are in fact the last true patriots.  Something like that.
