Seven minutes and twelve seconds later, RJD-7's eyes flickered and glowed a brighter red. He propped himself up with his arms and extended his legs to their nominal length.  "Thank you," he said to Kalli. "My systems are fully recharged and sensors are back online." He swiveled around 360 degrees. "There are no large or aggressive life forms within the security perimeter at this time. I will continue monitoring."  Indexing his colloquial interaction database, he added reassuringly, "You can all relax."

Timejump: The following day

Timestamp: 10:26 am

Fortunately for the Red Iron mercenaries the rest of the journey upriver had been uneventful. RDJ-7 had spotted one of the predatory trees on the riverbank and they'd stopped briefly to let Zoey harvest some of the numbing agent from it before continuing on. Once Washover was in sight they dropped anchor and spent the night in the relative safety of an inlet before proceeding to dock at the village in the clear light of morning. The mercenaries had already had breakfast and disembarked and the dockmaster and sent a runner so that their client could meet them before they would be allowed into the village properly...

Kallista tapped her foot experimentally against the wooden docks that they had moored the Intrepid at and decided that she didn't like the way the ancient, rotting would resounded underfoot. She turned towards the boat and called out to Treton, the mercenary in charge of guarding and maintaining the boat while they were away to drop the anchor so that it wouldn't float off downriver if the docks came apart. Kalli also motioned for Hannah to back up onto the Intrepid's deck since she was injured and the least likely to fare well if they did take a fall. She found herself eying the waters below warily as she waited impatiently for the runner to return with their client. Evan seemed slightly concerned about the docks too as he chose a relatively solid and reinforced place to put his considerable bulk.

Xavier wasn't sure that the rickety dock would hold his bulk very well, in fact, the whole thing probably needed to be rebuilt. There was plenty of cypress in the swamp, which would be the best thing to do that with since cypress trees grew in the water, it was practically rot-proof. He moved to a solid-looking spot over a piling while he waited for their contact to introduce themselves and tell them what was going on. He really didn't want to spend any more time here than necessary, but it was a job and he knew they wouldn't leave till it was completed.

Zoey stayed on the ship for now, until they figured out what was going on. The others had them drop anchor when it was found that the dock was very rickety, in fact, the bulky members were being very careful about not moving around too fast and had found spots to just stand until their contact made himself known. She sat in a chair on the deck and let Cappy run around and play in the trees, watching to make sure he didn't wander too far and smiled when he chittered and chattered at some of the local wildlife up there with him-squirrels, birds and other small animals.

Tessa found herself standing precariously on a few half sturdy boards on the rotted dock, but she held onto the piling for safety...and stayed near enough to the Intrepid to leap back on board if necessary. She didn't like waiting out in the open like this and hoped their client came to greet them sooner rather than later. Her thick tail twitched behind her as the team waited.

After what seemed like a long time to the Red Iron standing on the rickety dock, the client, a young man with tanned skin and bleached blonde hair finally met them. He introduced hiself as Peter and indicated to the dock master that they were cleared to come into Washover. "I'm glad you came so quickly." Peter said a little quickly and anxiously as Kallista and the others followed up up the path and into the village. "The attacks have gotten worse. There was one just last night." She listened to Peter for the timebeing, studying the village and content to let Peter ramble and the rest of her team ask questions if they wanted. At least until they were settled and in some shade or a cool building.

Xavier walked with Kallista and followed Peter through the town. He'd been a bit reluctant to move away from the piling, but the dock held him up until he got off of it, surprising him somewhat. As they walked Peter informed them that the attacks were getting worse and that bothered him. "Do you know why they're attacking?" He asked Peter. He was curious since the town didn't seem to have anything particularly valuable, indeed, it was a bit run-down, like the dock.

Zoey walked with the others, listening to Peter as he told them that the attacks had increased. She wondered if the people had done something to make the Mellwret angry since there didn't seem to be anything else of value. She hoped they could resolve the issue quickly, but right now she just wanted out of the heat and maybe something cool to drink.

Kallista quickly saw that Washover wasn't in much better contidion overall than the docks they had so recently stood on. If she had to guess in pre-war times it would have been some kind of outpost and a village had just grown up around it because it provided a good fishing spot or some other local resource. She listened when Xavier asked his question about why the Mellwrets had stepped up their attacks recently to Peter. Their client shrugged uneasily. "We're not sure." Peter replied as they walked over to a particularly large building and stood in the cooling shade. "We've recently expanded our fishing territories so we can trade with another settlement up north but I don't know for sure." He answered. Kallista thought about it as she sat down and leaned against the wooden wall. "Territorial dispute perhaps?" She wondered out loud.

This game is now formally closed. Current players are only to post 'epilogue' posts if they're so inclined.

The Mellwret attacks in Washover turned out to be a territorial dispute over hunting grounds that the Mellwrets had traditionally used for decades that the villagers were now encroaching into. Although they attacked the Red Iron when the mercenaries spread out to investigate, with Tessa's help they were eventually able to negotiate a compromise between the villagers and the Mellwrets to share the hunting grounds using the persuasion that the world was bad enough as it is and things didn't need to become worse for the survivors of Old Florida.

With the job completed the Red Iron returned to Palavale. Hannah completed restoration of her old-world vehicle which enabled them to travel further and faster along the crumbling remnants of the Old World roads. Eventually a couple years later after taking several more jobs for various clients the Red Iron was hired by a man named George who had claimed to have made it to the old world city of Miami, made it inside and found a treasure trove of old techologies and machines inside and gotten out alive. After some debate, Kallista and Xavier decided to accept the job for George wanted to retrieve more of the technology from Miami.

It had turned out that George had neither been lying, nor mistake. It was true the main highway leading into Miami was highly irradiated and had likely taken a hit during the Great War but he'd found another way through the twisted rubble. The city itself was no more irradiated than the surrounding lands and aside from a few moderately dangerous scavengers, it had been left untouched. They found modern weapons, vehicles, fusion generators and even an old hospital left from the Old World. Hannah's expertise proved invaluable and she managed to repair a fusion generator to bring power to the old hospital and a nearby university.

Evan and a couple of the other members of the Red Iron were sent back to Palavale to report on their discoveries. This resulted in the entire population of Palavale relocating to Miami using the old university as a base of operations and the remnants of the old parks as farming land-except for a small group who stayed behind to continue to operate Palavale as a trading outpost. They kept their movements and the alternative entrance into Miami a secret from the local populations. The Red Iron mutated somewhat over the following months. They became responsible for trading technology to the surrounding villages via Palavale, gradually making life easier and safer for the inhabitants of the Everglades area while increasing their own personal wealth.

Eventually over the passing of years the gradual technological influx to the area and the greater stability finally got the attention of two hidden Vaults in the area that had been quietly watching progress on the surface. One of them temporarily caught and detained the Red Iron. What came out of it was an agreement to to add the Vault Dwellers to the population of ex-Palavalers in Miami and assist them with the ultimate goal of the Vault Project-restore civilisation. The other Vault, although they chose to remain where they were-did open its doors to trade and emmigration and immigration to the locals.

As a final arc, the true cause of the Great War revealed itself in the form of malicious aliens who had been using the irradiated Earth and recovering societies as one giant laboratory to study the effects of nuclear disaster on many levels from biological to societal. The fact that humans were becoming organised again and would be rebuilding their own ships to reclaim the previously-abandoned attempts at space travel was enough for them. However abducting the Red Iron to gain information about how close exactly the humans were backfired as the Red Iron ended up escaping, killing most of the crew and comandeering their mothership.

After that, the Red Iron got their happily ever after. Most returned to the surface, deciding to keep the ship in orbit as a defense platform against any other non-Earth threats. Hannah ended up marrying George, having kids and spending most of her life either involved in studying the ship or helping rebuilt in Miami. Kallista stayed with Xavier and had kids of their own-the pair of them eventually becoming a part of the ruling council of Miami. Evan settled down with a family of his own and largely remained responsible for the security forces of the Restored Miami.

Of course there would have been other arcs in between, but this was the general gist of the game's direction.
