Emily looked over at Gaelan when he asked her a question and she nodded then gave her answer without hesitation. "Of course... Well the lycans will. From my limited encounters with them they're entirely capable of reasoned and intelligent thought. I've been told they have entire travelling packs and isolated villages that have nothing to do with Humes or Elviri and merely keep to themselves. In addition to the ones that blend in perfectly with society and cause no harm. I was intending for any cure I develop to be taken by those who want to become a regular Hume again-or for those that are feral." She explained honestly. "I'm still a while a way from finalizing a batch that will do the job but it seems possible to create." However she hadn't forgotten that Gaelan's question had included vampires.

Vampires within the Guardians? It seemed impossible. They were remorseless killers overcome by their predatory nature and an unquenchable thirst for blood or life force. Her studies of them likened them to drug addicts. Their needs, thoughts, desires and plans all spiralled and focused around how they would aquire their next meal. Slightly confused, Emily voiced her thoughts. "As for vampires... I don't see how its possible for them to be given a choice. Any intelligence has been subsumed by the need to hunt and feed. Even if you've somehow managed to train a few to act as your guard dogs or whatever I doubt they're in a condition to choose." She said doubtfully. "I always thought it was better for them to regain their normal Hume or Elviri mind." She admitted.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Viella had been listening quietly for the most part but now felt that it was time to step in. She glanced at the Professor and shrugged. "I'm not really versed enough in philosophy to give a proper answer to the ethics of curing lycanthropy or vampirism but if they suddenly regain themselves and start feeling guilt over what they did as a supernatural being then might that not be punishment in itself?" She asked before returning her attention to Emily. "Thank you for the information. Its been very helpful. We'll be going to Neyru soon to try to deal with Jian and his vampires once you're recovered. If you're willing to join us and help us that would be appreciated." The older Hume nodded.
"I'll give it some thought." She promised. Viella was satisfied with that answer for now. Emily had several days to make up her mind while she recovered anyway so there was no need to push her. "But even if you decide you don't want to go, we may want to offer you a position within the Guardians anyway here at the HQ. Your alchemical knowledge is clearly advanced and we could use someone like you." She could see the surprise on Emily's face at the offer. "Think on it. You have time to decide. In the meantime I'd like to introduce you to Vincent here." She gestured to the vampire. "He is a Daywalker who retained his mind and personality. Its very rare. I know of only two vampires who didnt submit to their instincts."
Vincent inclined his head politely when Viella introduced him. "Pleased to meet you." He said. He decided to overlook her trained guard dog comment since she'd only come in contact with feral vampires. "You have nothing to fear from me." He added.
Sephira smiled reassuringly at Emily after Viella introduced Vincent and told her that he was a Daywalker. "He's right, you don't need to fear him." She assured her. "Vincent has been with us for several years now. He was turned against his will over a hundred years ago and swore then that he would never kill to feed or feed on an unwilling person. He's kept that promise since I've known him."
Emily stared at Vincent when Viella introduced him as a vampire. He was still in the doorway of the infirmary and thus too far away for her psionic abilities to warn her of his true nature but when she looked at him closely as he spoke she could see the hints of fangs. Her mouth went dry and she could hardly hear Sephira speaking in his defence over the pounding of her heart. The lightheadedness returned and for a moment she almost pitched forward into the black pit of unconsciousness. Then she reminded herself with an effort that he'd stood at the doorway and participated in the conversation for several minutes now without making an aggressive move. Plus there were two guards and several Guardians between him and her. Emily took a deep breath and forced herself to try to think logically. "He kills his own kind? Why?" She asked, a little harsher than she intended.
"Because they kill innocent people in the name of feeding when killing is unnecessary to survive." Vincent said. "Because most vampires are inherently mindless, evil creatures with only one thought on their mind and that is where their next meal is coming from and how much can they make it hurt while they feed. I am only a vampire because I was forced to become one, but I am not one of them where it counts and that is here." He pointed at his head and at his heart.
Tialyn listened with interest to the conversation about curing the werewolves and vampires. What would it be like to have to make the decision to give up ones supernatural abilities to become human again? If there were some way to turn the vampires associated with Jian back to human, even Jian himself, that would solve a lot of their problems. How else could they prevent the slaughter that had occured where she'd come from? Maybe Eru was right...maybe their dragons would help them gain the upper hand this time.
Tialyn could only hope so.
She felt Reece's hands on her shoulders. She knew he was thinking of the possible deaths...of hers or his...and what would happen to their children. Being a family made being a Guardian that much more difficult in many ways. Which should come first? One helped save the world, the other protected two small children from harm.
Timejump: Twelve days later.
Time Stamp: 5:03 am
With the information obtained from Emily, the mission to send Viella's Guardian Unit to Neyru had been approved by Joanna. After thinking about it for the five days or so while she recovered from being bitten and partially drained by her vampire captors Emily had both agreed to accompany them on their mission and to join the Guardians. To the surprise of the trainers who had tested her capabilities she had proven to be competent enough with a sword, knife, rifle and pistol as well as in hand to hand combat as a result of her spoilt noble upbringing. As a general rule Guardians were more highly trained than she was but they'd deemed her competent enough to qualify at the lowest rank and participate in the mission.
So after the five days she spent healing and the two days being tested, the expedition to Neyru had finally set off. Because of the vast distance between Delmi and Neyru, Viella had decided that everyone was to travel by dragonback as it was the fastest and safest way to travel great distances over land. This had meant that the non-rider Guardians had to double up and ride on the back of a dragon. Even so the journey had taken them five long days of flying with only short breaks and staying overnight at the Inns of various towns and villages on the way. Now however they were on the final stretch before reaching Neyru...
Viella looked down from where she was riding Melenth with the other Dragonrider Guardians in formation behind her. She wasn't particularly a fan of night-time flying but most of their journey had been done at night because of Vincent's needs as a vampire. Still the lightening of the sky towards the east meant that dawn was finally coming and it would be time to find a place to land and rest soon. She squinted a bit as she thought she spotted the many tiny pinpricks of light that meant that there was a city up ahead. [Yes.] Melenth confirmed silently within her mind. [It is a rather large city full of Humes next to a large lake and a river feeding into it. It is full of squares with high walls.] An image of what her dragon could see with her multi-faceted sharp eyes appeared in Viella's mind. This had to be Neyru then. They'd finally made it. She nudged Emily who was sitting behind her and, from the way she leant against her back and the slackness in the way her arms were draped about her waist, Viella guessed she'd fallen asleep during the flight. "Looks like we'll be here soon." She told her passenger, indicating towards the pinpricks of light up ahead.
Vincent rode behind Sephira the whole five-day trip while the females he brought with him each rode with another rider. He'd made sure to feed before leaving to make things easier on the trip. He wished he could travel in daytime, but that was only possible if the destination was only a few hours away, otherwise he would die just like a Nightwalker would. However, he had adjusted to only being able to travel long distances by night and he knew where most all of the safe places were where he could rest during the day.
When they came into sight of Neyru he was grateful they'd made it before sunrise, though he could have traveled a bit just after daybreak. However, it would be nice to rest in a bed before continuing with the investigation.
Sephira and Azura were both happy to allow Vincent to ride with them on the trip to Neyru, and when she saw the lights up ahead Sephira was relieved. She loved riding Azura, but five straight nights of flying nonstop would wear out the hardiest rider. She was looking forward to a comfortable bed and snuggling up to her mate for a few hours before they started investigating what was going on.
Even though he loved flying so much Gaelan was tired.  Hije was also a little subdued, he wasn't trying to swoop out of formation.
'We'll get a rest soon,' Gaelan reassured the steel grey dragon.  'Rest and food," he added.  Hije liked to eat, it was fortunate that he was such an active dragon because otherwise he might easily get fat.
Gaelan had enjoyed the down time they'd had at home.  His young son was learning new things every day and Gaelan loved to spend time with him and Sephira.
He rode alongside his mate and was looking forward to spending some time alone with her.
Viella and Melenth flew for a little while longer before she had her purple dragon indicate to the others that they were to land a short distance from the city outskirts. She held on easily as Melenth glided silently down and landed gently on the side of the paved road next to some rice paddies. She rubbed Melenth's neck in gratitude for flying so long at night then dismounted while helping Emily dismount. As per usual she removed the riding harness and straps and folded it away neatly into her backpack. Then she looked over at the other Guardians who had landed nearby and dismounted along with their passengers. "All right, our dragons are to hunt and find suitable caves or shelter nearby to rest in." In the unlikely event the dragons didn't find a cave to sleep in they were instructed to contact their rider who would then have to see about hiring a barn or some other structure for the dragon to sleep in.
"In the meantime we'll head into Neyru and find an Inn or rented accomadation to stay in." Viella stretched her cramped muscles from long hours of straight flying while she waited until the dragons had launched themselves into the skies to hunt for food before walking up the road to the gates that lead into the city of Neyru. She found the architecture amazing with the bright red columns and distinctive yellow sloped roofs with intricate designs. It was nothing like she'd ever seen before. In the days before they'd left while Emily was recovering and taking her tests she'd taken the time to briefly study Alswyr culture. She found it interesting that they worshipped dragons although the thin snakelike version of their was clearly mythical. Nothing like the real dragons at all. The city was walled with a moat surrounding the walls with wide arched gateways. But she didn't want to explore. Not yet. The prospect of a warm meal and a bed was far more alluring right now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After several days of long, hard flying riding on the back of a dragon Emily had eventually learnt to sleep while resting against Viella's back. Even so when the Guardian leader nudged her awake shortly before descent and landing she still felt tired and sleepy. She found herself stretching and flexing her muscles while the dragons took off and faded into the pre-dawn skies. Then she put on her backpack and followed Viella as they walked up towards the city of Neyru.

Sephira glanced down into the moat as they approached the gate and she gasped in amazement at the beautiful fish that were swimming in it. They were large and golden-orange in color and some were the gold color splashed over white. The fish were of varying sizes between palm size to larger than her hand. Then they walked through the gates and she gazed in wonder at the architecture, there was nothing like this in her homeland, nor in Delmi and she loved it. If they weren't here on business she would love to explore the buildings and temples inside the city, but, like the others she just wanted some food and a bed.

Vincent pulled his hood over his head as they walked into the city. With the sun coming up, he didn't want to expose himself to too much sunlight, as tired as he was from all the flying. He did appreciate the different architecture that abounded in this city, surrounded by a moat teeming with the strangest, pretty fish he'd ever seen, though they seemed to be more for decoration than consumption, some of them looked almost large enough to eat, if he still consumed food, which he didn't. Still, he did miss food once in awhile, but since it offered him nothing by way of nutrition anymore there was no point. He was looking forward to lying down for awhile and so was the females he brought with him. He had his arms around them as they stumbled a bit from weariness and assured them that they would be resting soon.

Tialyn watched Jumana fly off to hunt, loving the way her dragon's silvery white hide sparkled in the pre-dawn light. She took her pack from Reece, knowing his was heavier and wanting to carry her own. They walked with the others toward Neyru. Both of them were awed by the beautiful city, and wished they could show the children such wonders.

"Food," Reece mumbled as he walked beside Tialyn, towering over her, feeling his stomach rumble.

"Shower and sleep," Tialyn laughed back, feeling dirty from the days of flying on her dragon.

Viella was glad that despite watching the Guardians, the guards posted at the large and imposing gate to Neyru made no attempt to interfere with their entry into the city. She'd had her team disguise themselves in normal Sandesinan clothing before entering the city so there was little chance of their arrival being reported to Jian or his lieutenants. A short walk up the main street leading into the city was enough for them to find an Inn that looked fairly high-class. She lead her team inside and booked them all rooms at reception although breakfast wouldn't be ready for a couple hours yet. She didn't mind as the Guardians all had food in their packs. It would be enough for them for now. Viella was relieved to finally have a chance to sleep as she bade goodnight-or goodmorning to the other Guardians and told them to meet her in the restaurant aross the street at lunchtime before going into her room. The furniture and decor was as unfamiliar to her as the architecture of the city but at the moment she was too tired to care. She locked the door to her room, sat down and ate a cold meal of dried meats and vegetables from her pack. After she finished eating she changed into a comfortable robe then crawled into bed and was asleep in minutes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emily followed Viella into the Inn and waited in the reception area while she arranged for rooms for all the Guardians. She took the key to her room when it was handed to her and acknowledged the instructions to meet in the restaurant across the street for lunch. Like Viella she went into her room and locked the door behind her. For now she was glad to eat familiar food from her pack rather than try the local cuisine since she was tired. The bed was a welcome place for her after she'd changed into a soft set of nightclothes and crawled in. It seemed she'd barely had time to make herself comfortable before she fell asleep.
As they walked through the gates and along the streets of Neyru, the Professor gaped with open-mouthed wonder.  He was fascinated by the architecture, the statuary, the fashions, the body language; he quickly pulled a notepad and pencil from inside his cloak and began to take copious notes.  "What an exotic wonderland!" he said.  "I've never journeyed to this part of the world before.  Professor Marcopolos claimed to have been here and described sights such as this, but he also talked of flying plates in the sky so we paid him no mind.  I suppose now I shall have to give second thoughts to those flying plates in the sky."
Nodding emphatically at Arjhay's comments, Eru looked back and forth from building to building, statue to statue, cart to wagon, pedestrian to horseman, trying to take it all in at once.  She also strained to overhear the snatches of foreign dialogue from the people as she passed them by-- hopefully they had translation scrolls available so that she could start to learn the language.
Suddenly she was startled by a tearing sound as one of the seams in her robe started to rip.  She had grown so excited that she had started to change into her Werewolf form.  Quickly taking a deep breath, she forced herself to relax.  It certainly wouldn't do any of them much good if she suddenly transformed in the middle of the street.
Maybe that cure wasn't such a bad idea, after all.
Time jump: The following day.
Time Stamp: 1:15pm
The Guardians of Delmi rested and slept well into the morning after their long flight to Nayru. At lunchtime they got up and had breakfast then bathed if they wanted. The dragons had successfully hunted, eaten then found a cave where they had suitably settled overnight. Now the search for Jian began...
Viella had taken the Guardians around the back of the Inn they were staying at in a secluded alley where they could talk without being observed or overheard by the locals. The dragons were content enough to hide out in the wilderness and their cave until they were needed. She glanced around discreetly to make sure none of the locals in their peculiar styled clothing were able to see them then began the meeting. "I think we should head to the palace and check the area around it. I'm not sure we'll be able to sneak in and while we probably have the authority for a public visit I'd prefer our arrival wasn't publically announced." She told them. Emily nodded. "Seems like a good place to start." She agreed. "Based on Tialyn's information it seems logical And if I remember my geography studies properly the palace will be at the centre or rear of the city." Viella considered for a moment then agreed. "All right, we'll head for the centre of Nayru and start from there. We pose as tourists." She indicated hers and Emily's casual mode of dress and concealed weapons over their normal uniform.
Sephira was wearing her normal clothing over her uniform after waking from a nice long sleep with Gaelan. They all went around the back of the inn and held a meeting on what they needed to do. Viella suggested acting as tourists and heading for the center of the city to look for the palace and she agreed with that. Keeping their true purpose hidden for now would only aid them until they could figure out how to kill Jian.
"A good plan." She said. "Jian likely has eyes and ears everywhere, even among the local mortals."
"Agreed." Vincent said. "It likely won't be long before one of his vampires notices the new one wandering around." He would need to keep his affiliation with the Guardians a secret until they did find the ancient vampire, which shouldn't take too much time. He was wearing his normal clothes, as the others were, to hide his uniform while they cased the city for the palace.
The plan decided, Viella lead the Guardians through the city of Neyru posing as tourists. Certainly they looked around at the strange architecture, sights, smells and sounds of a totally foreign city. It started to rain slightly-a mild drizzle that personally didn't dampen her own enjoyment of the experience despite the seriousness of their mission. After a while though a courier approached them with a sealed letter that bore the stamp of the Guardian seal. Discreetly she read the request, made a desicion and sent Tialyn with Reece as a Guard on the long journey to assist some Dhaskan Guardians with their new dragon hatchlings. She didn't like losing two members of her group including a dragon but her orders came from above so there was little choice. After a brief farewell Viella continued towards the palace. A few minutes later she stopped and stared. It was impressive and highly guarded. High walls, soldiers patrolling the walls in odd linked armour and robes, and archers. "Formiddable." She said quietly.
Vincent walked along with the others as they went 'sightseeing' through Neyru. It was a shame that Tialyn and Reece had to go, but orders were orders. Perhaps they could find help among the locals if push came to shove and they needed it, but then perhaps the other three dragons would take up the slack.
As he stared up at the impressive fortress that was the castle he thought that maybe they would need more help, if they could find it.
Sephira was sorry to see Tialyn and Reece leave, but if the Dhaskans needed help with their dragonlings then it was up to them to go help. She walked along with the others, 'sightseeing' and admiring the unusual architecture and dress styles, then they finally found the palace.
It was quite impressive and well-guarded, but they had to find a way inside. Jian could not be allowed to continue.
Nodding a farewell to Tialyn and Reece, the Professor continued to make notes and sketches in his notebook. But, keeping his own counsel, he was happy that Viella had sent them away. This Tialyn was much like his own friend, who he still missed very much, and he was well aware of how traumatic it was for her to be cut off from her home. It was best that she be far away from this coming battle so that she would be safe and have a chance to find new happiness.
Now if he could only think of an excuse to have Eru sent away, too
.
Hugging Tialyn and Reece good-bye, Eru waved and said she was sorry that they were going, but she was secretly very happy.  She had come to love the alternate Tialyn as much as her old friend and she wanted nothing more to happen to her.  After being taken away from her life and her friends and her love, she deserved a chance to start over and be happy.
Now if she could only think of an excuse to have the Professor sent away, too.
Viella discreetly circled the walls to the palace for a while until she found a potential way in. A drain was set at the base of the wall at the back of the palace, obviously designed to allow rain water or other waste to flow out and away from the palace. There was a thick metal grate preventing entry but if it could be removed the hole was big enough for a person to fit through. She looked up along the top of the walls and nodded approvingly. While guards patrolled overhead they didn't overlook the drain so if the Guardians stayed against the walls and kept quiet they could get into the palace. "We do need to get through there if possible." She said in a low voice, pointing to a local shrine as though she were a tourist pointing out the sites. "Maybe during the night..." Emily shook her head. "I have an alchemical concoction that should be able to eat away through the bars in a few minutes. It leaves a bit of an acrid smell though." She suggested.
