I'm of two minds on this trailer. On one hand there's some great stuff here. I love the flashes of Superman and the little quote from Lex was nice. The Batman glimpses were good.

All the other stuff though, eh. I am sick of the whole "hated and feared" routine in the comics so I am not enthusiastic to see it reproduced here in the movie. It also seems like some people are going to be worshiping Superman as a god.

My fear is that Batman is just going to kick the crap out of Superman just because he's Batman. Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns has been cited as a work that the movie is drawing on and that comic has Superman as a stooge of the government that an elderly Batman beats up. Batman is the only one who gets to talk and his line is telling Superman that he's going to make him bleed.

Maybe I'm being too pessimistic too early. It's just I don't like the concept of these two fighting at all and I would rather have gotten a true Man of Steel sequel rather than a movie that basically introduced the entire Justice League.

Still, I'm excited for this movie and to see Superman on the big screen again. Once we get past this movie there's the Justice League movie to look forward to and the various solo movies.

It does look pretty bad.  That Batman costume makes me cringe.

Meh.

OK, admittedly I was luke-warm on the sequel from the moment its title was announced; and my attitude hasn't changed, even after viewing this trailer.

Hopefully, the later trailers will be able generate some excitement for me.

I'd already decided to skip this after I felt Snyder betrayed Superman's character via his reckless disregard for human life in Man of Steel, and this trailer is consistent with my worst fears of what he had planned for the sequel.

I tried to watch Man of Steel, but I couldn't even get past the the rubbery Kryptonian armor with the massive bas-relief and Wolverine claws.

The first 2/3 of Man of Steel was the best Superman movie ever made, for my money. The last act was mindless disaster porn. Snyder is capable of making a good Superman movie. But will he? Impossible to say. I like that he's exploring some interesting themes in how the world would actually react to something like Superman.

Yeah.  But is it me, or is the trailer implying that Batman came about because Bruce Wayne was feeling so insignificant in the presence of Superman?

I hope not, but that was my take away.

I agree with every word of this. (Although the first 2/3 still suffered from The Worst Pa Kent Ever.)

No. They're borrowing extremely heavily from The Dark Knight Returns, so this is an older Batman who already has a lot of history behind him and who is possibly even coming out of retirement to confront Superman. (Ben Affleck is 11 years older than Henry Cavill, 42 to 31.) Although Neil DeGrasse Tyson (who's apparently in the movie) made some recent comments on The Daily Show indicating that they're inverting the dynamic of TDKR in a key respect, in that Batman is the establishment figure seeing Superman as an unknown quantity and renegade element.

I highly enjoyed Man of Steel through the first half or so (minus, as Christopher said, the characterization of Pa Kent) and I think Cavill is great for the part, but I don't want to see any more of Snyder's attempt to turn Superman into some Dark Knight/Watchmen hybrid (even though I did like those movies). I'm tired of this pervading idea that dark, violent, ethically compromised storytelling is superior to bright, principled, optimistic storytelling. You'd think Superman would be a place where we could still get some hope and fun and not be weighed down by cynicism and rage.

I highly enjoyed Man of Steel and didn't have a problem with the destruction at the end but I do share the concerns about this movie. I don't want to judge it too harshly based on a single trailer but it does look like it's going the grim and gritty route. Yes, it worked for the Batman movies (or at least the last two; Batman Begins really wasn't all that dark of a movie) but it doesn't work for every movie. Everything we've seen so far about this movie looks like it's going to be serious and dark and not be any fun at all. I hope I'm wrong. DC should take a page from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Flash TV show and learn that bright, happy heroes can work and be popular.

I think if we were getting an actual MoS sequel instead of this Vs. movie that is apparently introducing the entire Justice League it probably would be a lighter movie. Maybe not GoTG light, but I doubt it would appear so grim and serious. Too bad it's going to be a long time before we get a proper MoS sequel.

See, I think maybe making the movie more realistic lets it give more hope. If the whole movie is light, it's just an escape. If the movie is more dark, but good wins out anyway, you can walk out with a feeling that maybe there's hope for the real world too.

If the stuff you hear in the voice-overs is really what the movie attempts to be about, then I think it might be the first Zack Snyder picture I have a chance of liking. Especially when you hear Holly Hunter ask, "We've been so busy asking what Superman can do that no one has asked, what SHOULD he do?"

I also liked Alfred's voice-over about the rage "turning good men cruel."

We'll see.
