Spoilers through end of season 1 (after this first post) :)

So I meant to do this sooner, but here I am doing it now.  ;)  I wanted to rewatch season 1 before starting season 2.  Partly to re-familiarize myself with all the twists and turns and clues and mysteries.  But I wanted to watch again anyway, knowing what we know by the end of the season, to look for clues, hints, and Easter eggs that we may have missed the first time around, when we didn't know what we were looking for.  :)

So this is obviously not a thread for people new to the show, as I will be discussing each episode in the context of everything revealed by the end of the season.  (New viewers should read the original threads as they watch, instead. ;))

And I know most of you have already seen the season 2 opener, but I haven't yet.  But I will as soon as I finish this re-watch, by this weekend certainly! :D

I will also try to make note of any questions that remain unanswered, that we need to look for.  And there were some fun behind the scenes tidbits on Joe Mallozzi's blog that I wanted to post, so I think I will intersperse them in this thread. :)

Episode one

So, does Six remember from beginning?  Watch his reaction when he wakes up.  It is glimpsed in this ad for the season 1 DVD.  He seems to evaluate all the others first before he comments.  This could have been genuine confusion, or maybe he remembers even here.  If so, he looks to the others to see if it worked, see if they all forgot.  When they ask him "Who are you?  You don't remember do you?"  He decides they have forgotten and says "no".

I'm really not sure, but it's an interesting question.

There's a funny little moment I missed the first time!  When they explore the lockers and find belongings, Five and Six both pick up pieces of clothing.  Six picks up a colorful jacket, and Five picks up a huge black coat.  They hold the items up at the same time, each look at it, then look up at each other, and swap!    It's a tiny but adorable moment, LOL!  :D

And of course Three starts attacking a locked case!   He can't stand locked things staying locked!

Oh and I forgot that Four found the ring puzzle-box in a hidden panel behind a locker, and not in a bedroom.  And he seemed to feel his way to the hiding spot too.  (By instinct, I suppose.)  Interesting!

Also, One looks at his distorted reflection in the bottom of a cup.  He is the only one shown looking at his reflection.  Foreshadowing!!!!  :)

And have these questions been answered? ---  Who is hrothgar?  And how did someone in the crew get the pendant?  Did they kill someone of his and take it?

-------

Episode two

Three referred to Four as "Slashy Stabberson"!    (Though not to his face, that could be dangerous, LOL!) :hehe:

So, it sounds like Hrothgar is the one the miners paid all their savings to, to bring them back weapons.  The Raza must have intercepted that shipment somehow.  (Also, there were what looked like glasses with the pendant.  That must have belonged to Hrothgar's man.  None of this crew wears glasses.)

Ah, Bubba and Lulu!  :D  So much fun!  Though now all I can think is how those guns are named after Joe Mallozzi's dogs!  :howling:

Here is Anthony Lemke slinging the original Bubba and Lulu:  :hehe:

Quote

Three:  It's Bubba time.
One:  Who's Bubba?
Three:  This is Bubba.
One:  ...
Three:  What, you don't name your guns?
One:  No.
Three:  Ah, well, this is Bubba, this is Lulu, other one's Pip.
One:  What do you name the knife you keep in your boot?
Three:  I don't name the knife in my boot.
Three:  What do you think I am, psycho?

:howling:

Quotes modified from transcript

-------

Episode three

Chocolate protein pudding day!!!

Loving Five's ear cuffs!  :D  I didn't notice them all the first time, but she wears a different one each time, and they are awesome!  (Jodelle actually made a some of these ear cuffs, she is so cool!) :hehe:

So I noticed that Six wanted Five to leave the ship only after finding out she had everyone's memories.  Is this because he didn't want the others to get those memories back?  Or was he just being protective of her, knowing the others would all want something from her now?

One is reading the "antique book" he found!  This is when he first found it and read it himself!!!    He said: "It says it's a classic, so I'm sure I read it before, but it's all new to me now. "

I wonder where he found it?  Was it with the Hrothgar stuff?  Or somewhere else?

(Ok, I just checked the transcript, and he said he found it in "one of the holding rooms".  Where is that?)

Episode four

Did you hear Five's shopping list of all the geeky things she wants to get?!?  She was talking about getting goggles right from the start!!!   :harper:

Quote

I'm gonna buy myself a pair of goggles, some work gloves, and a brand new micro-gauge plasma cutter with a rotating tholium-carbide head.

Quote from transcript

Comms!!!!!!!!!!  No one uses their comms!!!! So many times when they should have used their comms, and didn't!!!!

And of course I loved hearing all the ads in the medical waiting room again.  It's worth noting that they have not explored the Soniwave dream device.  Something else to look out for!  (Oh, and a spelling correction from the transcript: it's called Somnawave!) :)

Aww, the android is already lonely, trying to get Four to keep her company when the rest go off to the station.

I noticed when Jace told the story of how he got waylaid by his imposter, he said the GA got an anonymous tip about the location of his safe-house, and had to flee.  That means One found out the location of his safe house!  I suppose that could be information you could buy.

I'm so totally on the fence about whether Six remembers yet or not.  He seemed genuinely excited to learn all about transfer transit, like it really was new to him.  And he passed the lie detector before.

Next up, zombies!

-------

Episode five

I don't think I have anything new to say here, just all the things I remember that were fun in this one.

One and Three bickering is lots of fun, they make such good frenemies! :hehe: There is the mystery of the extra dimensional key.  And David Hewlett being hilarious!

Oh, there was one thing, but just a silly thing in my head. :hehe:  When there was an explosion on the salvage ship and a corridor started to de-pressurize, Three was almost pulled out.  He had to hold on, and then One helped grab onto him.  What went through my head?  "Loki didn't let go!"    (Sorry, combination Lost Girl and Thor reference.) :hehe:

And a detail to remember: the dangerous virus research was being done by Traugott Corporation.

I'm sure the extra-dimensional key will become important, and probably the Somnawave, too.  I don't think they really do anything randomly.

But I don't think Six remembered anything at the beginning.  I don't think he remembers anything now.

^ That very well may be.  It was just something that occurred to me from his reaction waking up, and I wanted to explore the theory further.  And I found some more interesting clues, but at this point I see more evidence towards him not remembering.  But it was interesting to explore.  :)

Good re-cap of the show so far. It's bringing up things I had forgotten, like the extra-dimensional key and the Somnawave. I really need to re-watch this show.

Looking forward to your thoughts in the first two episodes of season 2.

Maybe it was a red herring inserted by the director, or just the actor being unsure of whether his character remembered or not. Or perhaps just the gut reaction of a law-enforcement personality to waking up surrounded by a bunch of scruffy ne'er-do-wells.

Trying to catch up, and turn my notes into posts.  :)

Episode six

And Five explores the memories!  :)

I'm trying to decide if Akita was complicit with empress during the assassination and frame or not.  I'm not sure.

We really have to remember the "bearded man", who Five stole the inter-dimensional key from. :oh:

And also that there is a stolen GA cruiser out there!

I wonder if Six was an undercover agent back when he was with the rebels?

Or was that their stolen cruiser showing up at the end of season one, and not the GA at all? (That may be very unlikely though from the teasers I've seen.  And yes, I know, I'm sure it's already been explained in the season 2 opener.) ;)

And I'm still not sure whether Six remembers things now or not.  He really did look surprised at that memory.  *sigh*  I can't tell.  :headshake:

And the biggest unanswered question of the day:  Who is farm-boy Titch?!?!?  My money is still on Three.

------

Episode seven

Six's line in the memory about the vault code: "I know I'll never forget it."  Ironic? Or a clue that he didn't forget?

We're gonna see Cyrus King at some point, aren't we?  (The guy who sent them Wendy the killer robot.)

Not a lot here that I didn't see before, I just love this show and these people so much!

Lots of emotions in Three's story with Sara. And his comments to One at the end, such a mature reaction.  And so ironic considering One's ... background.

Oh, and when they cut off Wendy (the evil robot's) head, and had to rush it to the bridge, for some reason I laughed my ass off at Four running full speed through the corridors with the head tucked under his arm like a football!  :spew:

^ I was keeping this thread on season 1.  :hehe:

Episode 8

In this episode, I couldn't help but think of something that Three said in one of the early episodes.  Something about humor being his defense mechanism.  He said it then, and it was very apparent here.

*checks transcript*
Ok, it was in episode 2:

Quote

You think this is funny?
Three:  It's my defense mechanism... humor.
Three:  That and, apparently, killing people.

So we see Transfer Transit in action, Six works through his past, and we learn about One's true identity.  Mostly.  ;)

So many theories to puzzle over about who really killed One's wife and why, and how he ended up here, etc!

One more funny note:
In the scene where they went to get some "grub" as Two called it, and were served mealworms.    When Two revealed what they had been eating, One and Four promptly lost their appetites, but Three contemplated for only a moment and then happily ate on.  What is interesting here is that One and Four came from wealthy childhoods, so they get to be picky.  But when you've always struggled to get by, you eat whatever you can get a hold of.

Episode 9

Ok, so I know many of us were confused by the Akita flashbacks.  Was this just Akita remembering?  Was Akita narrating things to Four?  Why would he narrate memories to someone who he thinks already knows these things?  Why are we learning things that Four still doesn't know?

So I watched this with a close eye for these questions, and I think it makes sense now.  Near the beginning I decided that most likely, Akita was merely remembering these things, and Four was still unaware of them.  But we were seeing these bits to Four's past because it informs as to his nature and his character, which then informs his decision making now, even when he does not remember.

There were two main flashbacks.  The first was when Four was a kid, and Akita gave him advice following his father's tirade.

But the second one was when Four saved Akita's life by taking credit for his military misstep, claiming the error was due to the sort of arrogant ruthlessness that his father was trying to instill in him, and therefor diffusing the situation.  This flashback was introduced this way:

Quote

You claim your innocence, and you appeal to my conscience, but you do not press your most persuasive argument, I owe you my life.

And followed up with this:

Quote

We've never spoken of that day. I never thanked you.

The fact that they had never spoken of that day, suggests to me that Akita was describing it now.  He would have to describe it, in order to say what event he was referring to, and to give his perspective of why he was thanking Ryo and of the respect he holds.  I think at that moment, he might have been on the verge of letting Four go, if his men had not arrived just then.  :(

Also, I always wondered if Akita was complicit in the frame, or if he merely suspected the possibility.  Because this part implies that he is at least aware of the possibility:

Quote

I spoke to you that night, in the corridor.
You were drunk, Denka.
And very angry.
I should have escorted you back to your room but instead, I let you go, and that decision will haunt me to my dying day.
I'd just learned about my brother being sent away.
You may not have liked it but sending your brother away was the right thing to do.
He'd become a distraction to you.
And how ironic that he now sits on the throne while I'm a thorn in everyone's side.
Your father always feared your impetuousness would be your downfall.
No.
It was my predictability.
When I went to confront him that night, my father was already dead.
My step-mother had cut his throat and simply waited for me.
You don't seem surprised.
Is it because you think I'm a liar or is it because I'm finally confirming something you had already suspected, which one is it?
As I said, I should have stopped you.

The way One jumps to conclusions about Three's guilt, and wanting revenge, puts such a contrast to when Three refused to blame One for Sara's death.  One jumped to conclusions then, and is jumping to conclusions now.  He is taking the news report at face value, which is downright foolish.  He really is not very bright, Three is smarter than One is.  Also, One is reacting to the first emotions that come to him, and acting very immature.  Three is more emotionally mature than One!

So for all his juvenile bluster and feigned cluelessness, it says a lot that Three is the smarter and more emotionally mature out of the pair.

And, I loved Two and Three's little talk about working out which one of the crew wiped their memories, going through by process of elimination.  That was a fun scene!

Also, have you noticed that Three is constantly eating every chance he gets?  I remember reading an interview with Anthony Lemke last year, where he said that was a conscious decision, possibly even a running gag.    Usually it is rare to see actors really eating in a scene, for various reasons:  having to eat through multiple takes, the food changing in different camera angles etc, having a mouthful when it's time to say your line.  Usually they just pretend to eat, or move / wave the food around.  So he made a conscious decision early on for this character, that anytime there was food in a scene, he would just be eating, the whole time!

Also, this little bit from Three seems to mean something important, I just have no idea what:

Quote

Two: Hey.
Hey.
One day I'm scraping by on powdered porridge and the next, I'm eating all the dehydrated veg chips I can stand.
Success is sweet.
And salty.
You know, when I taste the green ones, there's this little tickle in the back of my mind, like I'm trying to remember something, but I just...
I just can't.
It's only the green ones.
Here.
I keep wondering maybe if I just think hard enough, or eat hard enough, maybe I might remember.

So, what is Three trying to remember?  Something on a farm perhaps???

Maybe just non-linear storytelling so that we are indeed informed and understand the context of the encounter. There were scenes that would not be a part of Akita's memories.

Episode 10

Ah, I knew making note of Traugott would pay off!  So the same company that made the zombie virus, also made the explosive White Hole device!  Do they have any research that isn't massively deadly?!?  :o

This two parter is probably the most disturbing of the episodes.  Probably because the super creepy boss of the other team only gets more offensive with repeated viewings.  :yucky:

But of course I loved all the stuff with Five getting into the vault to get the device.  They really would have had no chance of getting in there without her, no matter who else was there or how well planned.  She was the only one able to improvise on the spot!  (And goggles in action!  :hehe:)

They couldn't have even escaped the surprise security android without her!  The guys just kept that android busy (and got their asses kicked), until Five used the battery to short it out.  And this exchange afterwards particularly highlights how much they depend on her:

Quote

Three:  We didn't come all this way just to give up now.
Cain:  We can't open the door!
Three:  The kid will think of something.
Three:  Right?
Three:  Your responsibilities the door.
Three:  We're just the muscle right?
Five:  Yeah right.
Five:  And you really came through on that score, didn't you?

Right!

Oh, and there was a funny moment when they were fighting the security android by the vault.  As I said, they were getting their asses kicked, and he (the android) had tossed both Cain and Three against a wall.  He picked up One, and as he prepared to fling him as well, One shouted "catch me!"    And Three stood up and actually tried to catch him!  :howling:  Of course he only managed to cushion One's landing, and get knocked out in the process, but he actually tried to catch him!  :spew:

Quotes from transcript

-----

Episode 11

Well, the less said the better, about the traitorous other crew hijacking the Raza and our team, and all the things they did (and threatened to do).  :grr:

Though I still had some favorite scenes in this episode.  Like when the guys were locked in the vault, plotting escape, and reacting to the apparent death of Two after she was put out the airlock.  Particularly how Three kept insisting he didn't care, all the while throwing and breaking things.  ;)

And I really liked the scene where One and Five were left tied up alone together, after being threatened with death and worse.  I don't know why, it was just ... a really nice moment between the two of them.  (It was a really odd time for a nice moment, but there it is.)  They had both just been traumatized, and threatened with horrible things, and probably both expected to die soon.  But as soon as they are left alone together they just ... talk.  And they talk about exactly what they would have been talking about if they hadn't just been threatened.  Instead of freaking out, they commiserate and comfort each other over the apparent death of Two.  And when they are done that, each one starts insisting on sacrificing themselves to save the other one.

I don't even know why that scene stood out to me so much, it's not particularly momentous or anything.  Maybe it's not any one thing that they said, it's just that these two don't interact one-on-one very often, and I really like their chemistry.  Its very ... comfortable and easy, like family.  And like there are things they don't even need to say, that are just understood.  Maybe it's also that One talks to Five completely as an equal, not as a kid or a techie or a burden.  It was a conversation with surprisingly little baggage or tension.  So I guess that was refreshing in a way, and I just really like how these two interact.  :)

Episode 12

Wil Wheaton is SO EVIL here!  :freakoutnonny:  :howling:

Just what deal did he make with Calchek to arrange this?  Did he lie?  Did he just offer a lot of money to send the team into an ambush?  Did he say "Oh, I only one to steal one of your team, you can keep the rest!"    Did Calchek actually expect the team to still work for him after this?!?!

And those scientists that were checking Two's brain for some fault, expecting to find a lack of empathy (they did not find any such fault).  Wow.  :headshake:  After seeing the way they treated her, I think they needed to be checked for empathy, at least that one guy in the lab who was clearly a psychopath!  :o  Her reactions were completely normal for how she was being treated!

Of course I loved the Android being a badass and saving the day!  :D

So at the end, when Wil Alex was talking to the creepy old man.  He looked genuinely scared of the old guy, and not happy about the things he had been apparently forced to do.  Not sure what exactly the old guy's goals are, but it seemed like he was trying to live forever.  (I'm sure he would love to make that immortality tree thing work.  Could Traugott and Dwarf Star corps be connected somehow?)  Anyway, this exchange:

Quote

Old Guy:  How old is this body?
Alex Rook:  It's twenty-four.
Old Guy:  You see what happens.
Old Guy:  Would you like to be next?
Alex Rook:  That won't be necessary.
Alex Rook:  We've nearly completed work on the new prototype.
Old Guy:  And what are you going to do about the other one?
Alex Rook:  We don't need her anymore.

The way I interpret that conversation, suggests that the old guy is trying to extend his life by transferring himself to a new body, or a series of new bodies.  But for some strange reason, the transfer process causes the new body to age at an accelerated rate, or be otherwise damaged.  Clearly they are trying to perfect a process of creating artificial humans, like Two.  Is this to make a more durable host for him to inhabit?  If so, why are they so worried about getting her brain and behavior right?  Wouldn't those come from the guy who wants a new body?

Also, are we meant to understand that he wants a female body to inhabit?  Or have we already made a giant assumption, in calling him the "old guy"?  After all, we know absolutely nothing about who this person is, other than that they are not in their original body!  Just because they are currently in a male body does not mean their original body was.

Anyway, always more mysteries to add to the list!

Oh, almost forgot!  That line of "We've nearly completed work on the new prototype" could turn into something as well.  If she (presumably she) is anything like Two, she may escape as well.  That could be interesting at some point in the future!  :oh:
