Last time in Knights of the Five.....

With everyone indicating that they were ready to begin the next Trial, Duncan had them change into thick, fur-lined anti-coldness clothing. The cold weather outfits were a bit bulky even for him but it would keep him warm while they travelled to the Trial. Then he and Temer led the Pilgrims out of the city and out into the open windy plains near Dulvern. It was a short journey-they reached a small area of trees and the cave within fifteen minutes of having left the Temple. Duncan faced the Pilgrims outside the cave entrance. "You remember the rules. Once you go in, it becomes succeed or fail." He reminded them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kian walked with the others, and sure enough, they only walked about fifteen or twenty minutes before they reached the cave, where Duncan told them it would be succeed or fail once they entered. He was ready, so he stepped inside the cave.
Now it was just a matter of finding the puzzles.
Viera, Rica and Danel all walked with Duncan and Temer to the cave. The clothing they wore kept them from freezing during the twenty minute walk. Then they were in front of the cave from their vision. Now it was up to them, so they all stepped inside the cave, only blinking a bit in response to the dimmer light inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Temer stood with Duncan as the Pilgrims all filed into the cave. They were all very intelligent, so he was confident that they could pass this test as well. He glanced at Duncan and smiled as they settled to wait.

Natasha had very few doubts at all as she nodded in response to Duncan's final warning, then proceeded into the cave that had been chosen as their Trial Site by Kaneea. As far as caves went this one seemed unremarkable, dim, frozen, damp, constructed of solid rock with the occasional particularly hardy species of moss occasionally growing on the walls. The air of the cave itself was chilly but at least there wasn't any wind as there had been outside on the plains. It wasn't long before the light from the cave entrance faded entirely and the Pilgrims were almost engulfed by darkness. Fortunately though they had come prepared, so Natasha got a lantern out of her backpack and lit it, providing at least some amount of light in the cave. Almost without thinking about it she chose to keep near Kian. Some of the others had also brought torches or lanterns and lit those as well. So with the illumination issue taken care of she led the way further into the cave until they finally came to what appeared to be the end of the cave leaving them facing a rock wall. However carved onto this wall were diagrams of the two moons in parts of their lunar phases along with three carved switches underneath some of the lunar phase panels. She regarded what was clearly the first puzzle with a slight frown. "Anyone got any ideas?" She asked.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Serena paused along with the other pilgrims once they had walked deep enough into the cave that they could barely see any light from the entrance however they quickly solved this issue by getting out torches and lanterns from their backpacks to provide illumination. She glanced over her shoulder towards the entrance were she could see that Duncan and Temer had entered the cave, but had only taken a few steps inside, likely to get out of the wind. She could see the two Knights setting up a fire where they could keep themselves warm while the Pilgrims attempted the Trial. Resolutely she turned back and followed Natasha deeper into the cave until they finally reached what seemed to be the rear wall with its lunar cycle diagrams carved into the rock along with its switches. Serena wasn't entirely comfortable inside the cave as it reminded her of the time she had been a vampire and had often sought out caves just like this one as a means of hiding and sheltering from the sun. She pushed those memories to the back of her mind and forced herself to focus on the carvings. When asked what they made of these diagrams she ventured the first guess that came to mind. "It looks like a series of diagrams depicting the different phases of the moons throughout the year." She ventured. "But from the looks of things the diagram is missing a few phases."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Accustomed to a warmer climate, Tao was shivering a bit by the time they reached the cave and gladly followed the rest of the pilgrims inside so they could get out of the wind. Though the cave was still chilly it was still better than being outside. He mildly envied Duncan and Temer who had apparently opted to build a campfire near the entrance to keep themselves warm while they waited. He lit his own torch with the others when the cave got too dark and followed deeper into the cave until they reached the rock wall with the lunar cycle depictions. He knew a little about the twin moons of Samsarra due to his time being in the Order of the Wind and Sun. The Monks studied the lunar cycle as the moons were a direct opposite to the brightness and warmth of the sun. Tao reached out and took Viera's hand as Serena speculated about the apparent missing lunar cycles not depicted in the carved mural. "I wonder if we have to use those missing pieces to help us decide in which order to press those carved switches." He added his thoughts to theirs.

Kian was happy that Natasha had opted to stay close to him after they entered the cave. It was very dim at first, and then it became almost pitch black. That was when Natasha lit a lantern and the others lit their own torches or lanterns. He had his own torch and lit it from Tao's torch. Then they walked further into the cave, until they came to a rock wall at the back, which appeared to be their first puzzle. There was a depiction of the twin moons in various stages, but Serena had speculated that not all the phases were depicted. And then Tao speculated that the missing cycles were a clue that might tell them in which order to press the switches to be able to proceed. "I think the two of you are onto something." He said, shivering a bit in the damp cave and envying Temer and Duncan their warm fire.

However, perhaps the damp chill was another test. One never knew with the Divines.

**************************************************

"I'm no expert on the moon cycles." Danel chimed in, even as he studied the carvings and the buttons. He had one arm around Rica in an attempt to share some body heat and keep her comfortable while he held his lit torch in his other hand. "Anyone have any idea on how to use the missing cycles to press the right switches?"

**************************************************

Rica was grateful for the body heat that Danel shared with her. She had not been comfortable going into the cave, but she was determined to see this through. One never knew what lurked in caves, but she trusted that the Divines wouldn't send them somewhere that they couldn't get out of. The light from the torches provided enough illumination to see the carved moons and switches, and she stood there and studied them. "Are there any indications which missing moon phase goes with which switch?"

***************************************************

Temer sat with Duncan as the Pilgrims all ventured farther into the cave. He held his hands out to the fire after it blazed up after Duncan got it started. He then noticed the light from lanterns and torches when the Pilgrims reached the dark inside of the cave. He knew there were puzzles to solve, but neither he nor Duncan knew what puzzles were being put towards the Pilgrims. But he had confidence that they would all pass this test, just as they had passed the previous two tests. Both of those tests involved teamwork and he was sure that these puzzles would also involve teamwork. He had Duncan had already guessed, and had their guesses confirmed by their own Divine, that this group was destined for something special. That Serena herself was destined for greatness.

He and Duncan were both proud and humbled to have been chosen to mentor this group through this Pilgrimage.

Serena continued to study the carved panels and the switches with Tao for several minutes. "I think we have to press the switches in the same order as the lunar cycle from start to finish. In which case we'd press the second one, then the third one, then the first, then the third one. That would complete the cycle." The Alswyran ex-Monk speculated. It made sense to her so she nodded. "That seems logical especially since one of Kaneea's manifestations are the twin moons. We might as well try it." And with that she reached out and pressed the second switch and in response some of the carvings started glowing a pale white-but nothing else happened so she assumed that they were correct. With a bit more confidence she pressed the other switches in the cycle and each time she did the carved panels lit up. Finally once the sequence had been completed the whole mural glowed brightly. Then there was a rumbling to their left and part of the seemingly solid rock wall slid aside to reveal an entrance to a new chamber. Cautiously Serena peered inside. From her position she could see a square chamber carved into the rock, filled with trees, plants and grasses. The chamber seemed to be very brightly lit with the natural light of day. But she could also feel a slight breeze of warm air emanating from the chamber itself. "Looks like we passed the first puzzle." She remarked with a faint note of hope in her voice.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Natasha smiled when Tao, with a bit of assistance from Serena came up with the solution to the first puzzle and a new room was revealed to them. She wondered if it was luck or Divine intention that one of their little group in particular knew about lunar cycles though either way she was grateful that they'd managed to pass the first one. The heat coming from the second room was inviting and she found herself cautiously leading the way, intently looking for any signs of danger or traps as she stepped inside. She felt a sense of relief as she walked further into the chamber. Though it was not by any means warm inside the chamber it was at least enough for the pilgrims to be comfortable given the thick protective clothing they were wearing. She found it a welcome change from the coldness of the cave. Now that she was properly inside she saw that the chamber was more like a vast hall. Huge, wide and spacious, filled with life and she could hear flowing water up ahead amongst the trees. The ground beneath her feet was soily as though she were walking in a forest and there was no trace of the bitter cold and snow. High above them was the roof of the chamber and hanging from the roof was a huge glowing sphere of white psionic crystal that was providing the light. "Looks like its safe." She commented to the others who followed her inside. She was a little puzzled as to what exactly they were supposed to do in this chamber until she felt the incredible touch of a Divinity touching her mind. It was Kaneea. In their minds she explained that there was a beast inside this cavern with the ability to change the colours and patterns of it's hide as camoflage. Their task was to devise a way to track it and catch it without harming it. Then Kaneea was gone from their minds. Natasha looked at the others thoughtfully. "Looks like we're going to have to work together on this one. I know Kian also has experience in hunting, tracking and wilderness survival. Do any of the rest of you have experience in that?" She asked.
Kian sighed with relief when Tao and Serena together solved the first puzzle. If that trend held, then two more of them might be needed for the next puzzle. The only thing he knew when the rock wall slid aside was that the room beyond was marginally warmer than out here, so he followed Natasha into a very large room reminiscent of a forest. Here he was most at home. Then Kaneea spoke to him, telling him about the chameleon beast and that they had to capture it and not harm it. He had set traps before to catch prey, it shouldn't be much different devising a humane trap.
Natasha then asked the others if they had any survival skills, for those would be needed to do this. Even if they didn't have expert skills, they could still help in other ways.
***************************************************
Viera couldn't believe the beauty of the forested room they walked into from the cold room of before. It wasn't hot, by any means, but her chill went away as she walked further in and she sighed in relief that the cold was, for now, behind them.
When Kaneea spoke to them, she visibly started. She had no idea how to trap anything. But perhaps she could help move the creature towards a trap that someone else built.
"I know how to survive a bandit attack." She said. "But survival in these conditions I'm not as familiar with. I couldn't begin to know how to trap a creature we can't even see."
***********************************************
Rica liked the warmth coming from the other room and she immediately walked inside and looked around. She used to be a courier. She ran the roads, she didn't live in the woods or wilderness. And when Kaneea gave them their task, she shook her head. "I'm no trapper. I used to be a courier."
***********************************************
Danel smiled happily when Serena and Tao solved the first puzzle and a rock wall slid away to reveal a large, forested room, complete with stream and enough heat to take away the chill. He listened as Kaneea explained that they would have to track and capture a beast that was able to change colors to match its environment. Natasha asked them about their survival skills and he thought about his. He was the son of a blacksmith and he could build things, but he'd never lived in the wilderness. "Perhaps I can help one of you build a humane trap." He offered.
Natasha almost felt at home in this forested cavern as she'd spent many months out travelling in the wilderness as a wandering mercenary before she had made the commitment to become a Knight of the Five. She wasn't surprised when most of the others said they had no to very little survival experience. Serena shook her head doubtfully. "We took a basic survival course as part of basic training for the city guard." She admitted. "But it was only very basic meant to be used only if we had to travel between cities or got lost in the wilderness. Both times we had extensive camping equipment with us and the focus was on foraging and hunting rather than trapping. Nevertheless I'll do what I can to help." Natasha nodded thoughtfully as she gazed out at the section of woodland. She slowed her breathing and relaxed, allowing herself to concentrate on her surroundings and what she felt from this cavern. She almost immediately sensed that this place was a sanctuary for nature-probably constructed by Kaneea herself to protect specimens of the most rare species. It was an honour to be allowed her even as part of a trial. "I don't think the beast we're supposed to track is particularly large, nor do I think its predatory or even particularly hostile. Though there's always an element of danger in the trials the Divines seem to take care to make sure we won't be hurt if we're careful. I think we should be careful not to cause this place any more damage than we have to. It feels... sacred." She cautioned them. "The first step seems to be to have a scout around and get a general feel for the layout of this woodland and identify any places we might be able to use to our advantage." She suggested.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Serena looked around the immediate area they were in at the mouth of the entrance to the vast forested cavern while she listened to Natasha outline her thoughts and the sense she got from this place as an experienced tracker and survivalist. She found herself agreeing with everything the other Hume said. This cavern did feel sacred and that the only people that could enter were those who had the discreet permission from Kaneea or one of the Divines. She still had little idea how they were going to track down this beast. Likely they would have to find somewhere they could drive it out into the open or lie in ambush in a location it would have to approach like a food or water source. However she agreed with the idea that they should scout around the cavern a bit and get the feel of the layout. "I'm not sure we should split up though." She ventured her opinion. "In previous trials you've told me that we're expected to work together. Not like we're in a particular rush anyway." She saw Natasha nod in agreement. "Agreed." It was Tao that spoke. "We should stick together just in case." Serena then began cautiously walking through the woodland deciding first to stick to the walls and circle around the outside before they'd start exploring the interior, aware that the rest of the pilgrims had spread out around her as they scouted out the forested cavern.
Rejected and gone.

Danel and Rica spread out along the walls as they all started to get a feel of this...sanctuary. That was why Kaneea had told them to trap the creature. It was obviously protected and she wanted no harm to come to it, she just wanted to see how they worked together to accomplish their goal.

Danel closed his eyes as he listened to the sounds of the forest. He had no idea how to track this beast, nor how they could safely trap it, but he would help in any way he could. "It's so quiet. Like a temple."

*****************************************************

Kian nodded when Serena said they should stick together and Natasha suggested they scout around. That was the only way that they could get a feel of where this creature was. He closed his eyes and smiled. He could feel Kaneea there with them and she was watching them carefully, but with affection. She was confident they could do it and she seemed particularly intent on him. As if he was a focus of this trial. "I will do my best." He promised the Divine, even as he brought all his instincts and training to bear as he scouted around, looking for possible tracks or broken leaves, pointing to this elusive creature.

He almost wished a place like this existed outside of this cave, it was so beautiful. But he had a feeling that man would almost certainly ruin that beauty. So it was good that it stayed hidden, and that the unique creatures inside also stayed hidden.

*****************************************************

Viera spread out with the rest of them, and she stayed close to Tao as they searched out the creature they were supposed to capture. She could feel the presence of a powerful being with them and thought maybe Kaneea was watching them closely. Naturally so, she wanted to watch them succeed. For she seemed to be of the mind that they could.

The place was beautiful, and Viera was honored to be allowed to come here and indulge in its beauty.

The group of pilgrims eventually circled around the edge of the forested cave sanctuary before starting to comb through it methodically in straight lines like the lattice of a grid. During that time they became aware of many things as they travelled. The powerful, watching presence of Kaneea that seemed to watch them with a mixture of expectancy and hope. The birds that flitted in the trees, the bugs that skittered through the undergrowth and across the plants. The gentle gurgle of a single stream that meandered it's way across the cavern to deposit into a large pond against one of the walls. And the animals that roamed. They caught glimpses, spoor or other signs of various rodents and lower-order herbivores such as rabbits, badgers and even traces of a fox. But there were also species of small animal that none could put a name to as they had never been formally discovered by Humes or Elviri. Most were not inherently afraid of the intruders and only scattered when the pilgrims got too close or made much noise.

Natasha and Kian were leading the group as they were the experienced trackers and survivalists and after awhile the former began to sense that there was another mind watching them. It was not a powerful mind, not even a sentient one and it was quite simplistic but she distinctly felt its curiousity toward the strange two-legged creatures that intruded in its territory. She stopped and looked around intently but she couldn't see anything around them. "I don't think we're alone." Natasha said to the others in a quiet, calm, relaxed voice so as not to alarm herself, her friends or their unknown watcher. "Something is watching us and its not Kaneea. It almost seems to be telepathic but its no Hume or Elviri?" She kept looking around the small clearing they were standing in intently. "Can you feel it? Its curious...." On an instinct she turned and looked towards a set of bushes ahead. She thought she could see a faint outline not natural to the bushes..... then all of a sudden there was a shimmering of colours and a light green and blue dappled beast showed itself. She didn't know what species the animal was as it was roughly the size of a small dog and looked vaguely like a cross between a fox and a cat. It was looking at them with large, intense curious eyes. She could feel it's mind strongly now as it probed theirs. "Wow." She said in pleased surprise. "Its magnificent."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Serena had been following Natasha and Kian, treading carefully so that she wouldn't damage any plants or step on any insects with her passing. Like the others she felt this place was very sacred and she felt compelled to treat this forested cave sanctuary with reverence and respect since she felt it was in every way as much of a temple as the ones built in the cities except this one had evidently been created by a goddess herself. She wanted to keep it intact as possible. Everything seemed beautiful to her now. Being a vampire had destroyed so much of her feelings of value, self worth and her whole life. Her maker had taken everything from her and left nothing but pain, death and horror behind and she hated what she had been despite having enjoyed every minute of it when she was a vampire-except when she was hungry. But now she had been given a second chance to quite literally live again. A second life. One worthy of living however she didn't feel deserving of the honour of being able to experience the wonders of this sanctuary. Nevertheless she kept an eye out for this beast they were supposed to find as she followed the others. Gradually she became aware of the simple, gentle, curious mind probing hers not long before Natasha stopped them in a small clearing. Serena was familiar with telepathy having been a telepath herself as a vampire so she knew she was being probed yet the mind wasn't sentient. Then the creature revealed itself to them from across the clearing and she stared at it in amazement. After Natasha's gasp she had an idea. "Hello there." Serena knew that the blue-green dappled beast wouldn't be able to understand her words but she hoped it might be able to understand her mind and emotions. "Do not be afraid, little one. We will not hurt you. We think you are very pretty." She continued. The beast made a few meow-like cat sounds and backed off when she spoke however it soon stopped and continued to regard them with its wide eyes.
Kian walked with Natasha as they started combing the forest itself. They all seemed as one to be moving carefully, as much to not destroy plant life as to stay quiet while they hunter this mysterious creature. When Natasha stopped and declared the presence of another mind besides Kaneea, he stopped as well and then he could feel it too. The presence of a small, animal mind.
And then it ventured into the clearing and he couldn't help but smile. This was no dangerous creature, it was a curious little green and blue fuzzy, pretty rabbit/cat-looking creature.
He could sense Serena trying to soothe its fears with words and telepathy and he added his own, also crouching to seem less intimidating. He held out his hand and spoke in a soft voice as well as projecting feelings of curiosity and harmlessness. "We won't hurt you, little one."
******************************************
Danel moved carefully through the forest, just as the others, mindful to watch where he stepped. This beautiful sanctuary deserved that and he was going to leave as little as possible behind when they left.
Then they all stopped and he heard Natasha talking about a telepathic, non-sentient mind. Then a small green and blue creature, the likes of which he had never seen before, ventured out of the bushes. It was definitely camouflaged, as he hadn't seen anything till it ventured out.
He took a clue from Kian and crouched down, trying to appear as harmless as possible, even as the creature stopped moving away from them and turned to regard them again.
********************************
"Oh, what an adorable creature!" Rica whispered in order not to startle it. She also crouched down and smiled at it when it stopped moving away from them. "We won't hurt you, little one."
*****************************
Viella also couldn't help but be enchanted by the beautiful cat-rabbit creature. She really didn't give animals much thought beyond hunting them for food, but this creature was just....enchanting with its long ears and large, inquisitive eyes. She could feel its probing and she tried to project that she would never hunt it for food. She crouched down and hoped that maybe it would come over to them.
