I'm all for giving the police armored vehicles, military grade body armor, and other gear that will save lives. However, for the life of me I don't see why local cops would need a grenade launcher?

^ That's for if the black guy selling single cigarettes or holding his cellphone in a threatening manner outruns being shot in the back they can bracket him with a grenade barrage.

Military hardware saves lives?

You do know what military hardware is for, right?

Yes I do know what military hardware is for. You are aware that there are two types of hardware: Defensive and Offensive, right? Defensive being upgraded vehicles, body armor, military grade helmets, etc. Offfensive being grenade launchers, 50 cal sniper rifles, RPG's, etc.

Uh huh. And how are "upgraded vehicles, body armor, military grade helmets" relevant in the suburbs?

SWAT uses specialised equipment, vehicles, and body armour for special situations. Military equipment is designed for combat, not for plucking kooks from the burbs.

Under the Obama rules, that helmet was banned from the police. Now that helmet isn't banned. So Obama wanted cops less safe. Why shouldn't cops have that kind of helmet? or increased body armor?

Obama didn't want cops less safe. That's nonsense. What he wanted was the cops to be demilitarised. Cops are cops, not soldiers.

The "less safe" argument is as silly as putting silencers on guns and rifles in order to protect the shooter's ears- common reasoning amongst NRA types.

No body armour is effective against armour-piercing ordnance, and you can thank terrorist organisations like the NRA for making automatic weapons, 60-cal rifles, and other military-grade assault hardware available to the public.

No, what was in the list of banned: Tracked armored vehicles, bayonets, grenade launchers, camouflage uniforms, and large-caliber weapons and ammunition. This list of banned items was reported in May 2015. The Pulse killings happened in June 2016. So if the helmets were actually banned by Obama, how is it they were wearing the helmets? Delay? Defying the President? Didn't get the memo? Steve Doocy making a claim? Then correcting it later:

Quote

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Fox News alert. We're getting our first look at the police officer who took a bullet to the head in the Orlando shoot-out only to be saved by his Kevlar helmet. Look at that.
AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): Officer Michael Napolitano showing some cuts on his head as you can see because of the blood on his head, from a few stitches after the Kevlar helmet did stop that fatal shot that ultimately saved his life.
DOOCY: It did indeed. We told you yesterday the Obama administration has been pushing the end federal funding for military-style equipment used by local police departments. To be clear, these are not the exact items on the administration's banned list. The plan is just an overall effort to improve the image of police in the aftermath of the Ferguson riots.

I stand corrected then. I was under the impression that those helmets were banned. Thank you for clarifying the case.

You are welcome, LotS. We all have to really look into things before we believe what we read or hear. Outrage is easy, calm thinking is hard. I know you like the current president, but he is using outrage far more often than he is using calm thinking, and that is bad for all of us and the rest of the world's countries.

For the amount of cash they spent on Shovel Ready jobs I can see why Trump would now be disappointed.

I want to thank LoTS and Elara for their civil exchange.  Seriously - we ALL need to be aggressively on our guard about anything sounding TOO much like it supports our point of view.  We now know that a foreign power is actively exploiting our differences through a disinformation campaign.

IF we don't all know - please watch this;
