The crew must contend with the disastrous fallout from Kelly's decision.

The season finale.

^^  Hey, I was right.

Once again, Orville somehow manages to squeeze a two-hour movie into less than an hour.  Man, a lot happened here, and everyone had something to do, even Isaac's head and alternate Alara.  In a way, it's a shame that the final episode of the season, and maybe the series, took place in an alternate Star Wars-ish reality, but on the other hand, if it is the end, that final scene makes for some nice closure. Maybe there would be some subtle differences in the restored timeline, but I'd rather just assume that everything went back to the perfection that we know-- and if they do get renewed, I hope they just move on and leave it alone.

But as an alternate timeline-- Orville's version of "Yesterday's Enterprise"-- there were many intriguing elements. Of all the characters, it seems only John, Alara, Bortus, and Isaac served on the Orville-- which, in this version, the Kaylons successfully used to attack Earth.  Ed and Kelly and the rest just went about their average careers, not really failing, but not really standing out.  And the Orville ended up at the bottom of the Mariana Trench (on a dead world, without even fish in the oceans).  And yet somehow events conspired, with the catalyst of Kelly's brief glimpse of a better future, to bring them all together to set right what once went wrong.

And it's fitting that everything-- literally the fate of the galaxy-- hinged on Ed and Kelly's love for each other.  The original comedic premise of the series seemed to be that of a second-rate captain stuck with his ex-wife as his first officer. But upon reflection that premise was really that Ed and Kelly are meant to be together in some capacity, in any timeline or universe, and that they bring harmony to the world. A nice message to end on, if this is indeed the end.

I thought MacFarlane wanted to move on, not that FOX wanted to cancel. But given how much the show must cost, I can see either scenario.

If THE ORVILLE gets a season 3, it was listed as one of the shows that will be getting a major tax break for it.  That is a good incentive to keep it going for at least one more season, should either FOX or MacFarlane decide to be done with the show.

The Orville had also received a major tax break for its second season.  As you say, the tax break that FOX would receive if a 3rd season is made is incentive for The Orville to be renewed.

Has it been said that MacFarlane wants to move on?  I thought Orville was his labor of love.

The rumor that I heard, from a source that has a decent record of being accurate, is that the show was renewed internally by FOX (with options for several seasons), but that MacFarlane's contract is up in June, so any announcements are on hold.

^^The common denominator in the rumors is that it depends on MacFarlane whether the show continues, not that FOX wants to cancel it for ratings or financial reasons (except for the financial reason of renegotiating McFarlane's contract before he jumps to a streaming service.

What was the reason Halston Sage left?

Ah, okay.

It's been said that it had something to do with she and MacFarlane breaking up.  It's also been said that she had another project she wanted to do.  So who knows?

It’s official. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi adventure series The Orville will return for a third season on Fox.

The renewal is not unexpected. Things were looking bright for a Season 2 renewal when the series received approval for $15.8 million in the latest round of TV tax credits for a third season, up from the $14.5 million incentive it got for Season 2. While landing a tax credit does not guarantee a pickup, it makes it more likely. The series also has strong support from the network.

This is great news. Season 2 was a big improvement over season 1 and I wanted to see them continue with the show and now we get to. Six seasons and a movie! (Community reference).

Great news, indeed.  I hope Orville can manage at least as many episodes as TOS.  Of course, that will take four more seasons, at this rate....
