I finally watched A Clockwork Orange. Read the book many years ago, never watched the movie.

I have to say that I experienced something similar with Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, which we had to read in high school.

My take is that the pseudointellectual drivel written about both stories is about as far off the mark as you can get.

Steppenwolf was about a stuffy middle-aged man coming to terms with himself. Nothing more, nothing less.

A Clockwork Orange is about teenage sociopathy, nothing more, nothing less. That it's set in a dystopian future is a red-herring. The point of the story is that teenagers are sociopaths that eventually grow up and out of such behaviour. Anthony Burgess spells this out clearly in the last chapter.
Capitalism is a pyramid scheme run by the 1%.
