Batwoman star Ruby Rose has exited the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rose will step down after just one season of The CW series. She did not provide a reason for her departure. Warner Bros. plans to recast the role, as the show had already been renewed for a second season. Batwoman is slated to return for a full season sometime in January 2021.

This is pretty surprising news. At first I had to remind myself that it wasn't April and that this wasn't an April Fool's Day prank.

The second season will go ahead just with a new actress in the role. I'm curious who they will get, especially since they want to cast an actress who is a member of the LGBT community.

I'm sorry to hear this, as Ruby Rose was the principal draw for me.

It's sad news. Rose was fantastic in the role. She's such a striking, distinctive presence -- she won't be easy to replace.

A number of actresses have already expressed interest in the role on social media. But for me, the most credible candidate to join this Battle for the Cowl so far is Jade Tailor of The Magicians:

I could really see that. She's similar in appearance and height, she's a trained stunt fighter (as she shows in the Twitter video at the above link), she's got a similar edge to Rose, and she's just about as gorgeous as Rose.

Of course, just posting a Twitter video doesn't mean someone's genuinely in contention for the role, but this is the first alternative I've seen mentioned that I not only find credible, but am excited by. I shouldn't get my hopes up, but I'd be happy if she got the part.

Batwoman is moving forward without Kate Kane.

According to Decider, new character Ryan Wilder will take up the Scarlet Knight's mantle in Season 2. As such, the show will not recast Kate Kane, who was played by Ruby Rose in Season 1.

The casting notice calls for a "female, mid-late 20s, any ethnicity." According to the character description, "She's likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She's also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her... With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero." LGBTQ-identifying actors were encouraged to submit.

This is an interesting wrinkle. I had just assumed they would cast a new actress to play Kate. Instead it looks like a new character will take up the mantle. I do wonder how this will play out. As it states further down in the article there were some major cliffhangers that all basically revolve around Kate so I'm curious to see how those will be resolved. They might do a time jump.

It will be interesting to see if they keep the same entire cast since, again, they were all tied to Kate and her story. Alice and Jacob are tied pretty heavily to Kate's story. Honestly I wouldn't mind less Alice since I thought she was over-used in the first season.

I'm hoping the reason they went with a new character rather than recasting Kate is that they plan to keep Ruby Rose around on a recurring basis, with a lighter workload.

(CNN)Javicia Leslie is the CW's new Batwoman.

The actress, who previously starred in "God Friended Me" on CBS, is set to debut in the iconic role in January 2021.

Leslie replaces Ruby Rose, who left the show in May after one season in a shocking move.

"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," Leslie said in a statement.

We have our new Batwoman. I haven't seen her in anything but I'm looking forward to seeing what she brings to the role.
