In a hidden clearing just a stone throw from the hundred foot long bridge that connected the Inn’s island to its larger neighbor, a small group waited for the stroke of midnight.  Twelve black robed figures and a thirteenth in silks of blood red chanted softly but strongly.  Black tallow candles guttering in the errant breezes lit the area fitfully. The gleam of Onyx and gold, the silver cold shimmer of knife edges…the whimpers of the two bound and gagged figures that lay at the feet of each ebon robed chanter… The chant built and grew as power answered. As one they stooped, pulled their captives erect, one in each hand, and power lanced forth to sweep across the sacrifice’s throats like the sharpest of blades.  Now other figures, the twisted hulking forms of rat men, sprinted from the shadows, silver bowls ready to catch the fountaining blood. Collecting it they reverently placed it before the red clad senior.

Now another chant started and the blood was changed, the power of the sacrifice warped into a spell of protection.  However, against the Inn, even that would be not enough.  At a subtle gesture by the scarlet draped adept, vampires glided unnoticed to stand behind the lesser mages.  They too struck as one, assassinating the adept’s minions. Thirty-six deaths, twelve of them fully powered mages…

Power came with a screaming rush, and gathered in a brilliantly glowing sphere in the center of the casting circle. One by one the vampires drank of the blood, then passed through the orb. Minute shimmers limed each for a brief second then faded into them.  Running with a vampire’s full speed, they flowed through the woods, leaping the distance between the two islands with ease. Silent as fog they swept through the gardens seeking the spot Michiko considered her private sanctuary.

Michiko was indeed where they had been informed that they would find her.  She had taken to brooding there over the difficult course of her recovery.  Her trek home had stressed her body to greatly and had stopped the nanites from healing her beyond where it had progressed at the Medical center.  Jono and Alecks, working together had completed the healing of all but her eyes, but it had been painful and draining for all three. They had had to work in stages and tomorrow would see to her eyes. The Inn had helped as it could, but with Shai still gone it was slowly drawing back in on itself.

Thor caught sight of the interlopers as they surrounded Michiko, and screeching with fury dove from his perch high in the near by tree, striking out with cruel talons. With speed beyond that of the human eye to catch one of the vampires swung his own rending claws at the golden eagle, tearing off a wing and sending Thor to the ground, dieing.  Michiko had leapt to her feet at his first scream, but sightless and still weak she was easily over whelmed and borne away at full speed.  The protections about them kept the Inn from even being aware of them….Michiko, who had refused to see any save for Jono and Alecks, might not be missed till morning…

Carlotta ran in the moonlight, reveling in the pure joy of movement.  Her silver fur shimmered and rippled as she sped through the woods.  The faint scent of rabbit came to her nose and she twisted to follow the scent.  A snack, as succulent as young hare, was never passed up.  Sighting the rabbit she pounced, but the rabbit wriggled free and fled at its fastest. Grinning a lupine grin she chased after it, matching it zig for zag.

Carlotta never saw the net that fell upon her, its great weight shaking the ground as it landed about her, entangling her.  Vampires followed it and their clubs descended brutally on her struggling from until it stilled.  Laughing cruelly they bore her away, to a waiting air car.

They tossed her limp body into the capacious trunk that already held a heavily drugged Michoko.  They headed westward, over the ocean, to a prepared base.

Vaughn sat in his office at 'Stillwaters', his classiest of establishments. Usually at this time of night, he would be watching over Michiko from afar. Alecks and Jono had done wonders for her. He knew how much she prided herself on her outer beauty, even though her inner beauty was far more beautiful.

But tonight, his presence was required at the club. A customer had gotten quite rowdy with one of the girls, and the authorities had to be contacted. Paperwork was such a bitch for a proprietor. He had just returned from the medcenter, after escorting Marcie for a checkup. She had checked out, and was just scared more than anything. But it was better to be safe than sorry.

The sign said right at the door, that rowdiness, and roughness, was not allowed in his establishments.  Somehow though, they were probably already too drunk when they entered the building to even read the signs. Perhaps he would have to have voice signs. Oh, he could feel his budget screaming already.

Suddenly he bolted upright. His senses clouding his head, sending him backwards against the wall. His fingers going to his temples, he fought to focus.

"What the hell could possibly be going on now."

Alecks sat in the very center of the circular clearing, meditating.  Carlotta had promised to come visit after she had eaten dinner, and he was having trouble concentrating at the thought.  It had been only 10 days since he had carried her home, yet he could remember the feelings like it was moments ago.

The winds changed suddenly, and his eyes opened.  Something couldn't be right.  The winds *never* blew this way in the month the Landed called Malhasir.

Old Father, a giant Cane 'Coon, trundled towards him, whispering to him of the rumours on the breeze.

"Carlotta?" he said standing immediatly to go to her, when he was stopped by the further words of Old Father.

"Michiko too?  And Thor?  Hurt?  Which one?"

The 'Coon stared at him, sitting bemusedly as only an animal could.

"A dying screech?"

Alecks needed to hear no more.  He set off at a breakneck speed for the Inn, through the caves quickly, never tiring as he ran.

As he neared the walls of the Inn's gardens, his gait changed to a peculiar dance he used to focus his thoughts.  Using a levitation spell, he cleared the wall into Michiko's sanctuary with a single leap.

The smell of vampire... strangley altered vampire hung in the air.  His eyes closed, and he reached out...  no sign of Michiko's astral signature, or any other save a fainting eagle.

"Thor," he whispered, scooping it and its severed wing up and running for the Vet's.

"Hold on.  Once your safe, I'll begin searching for Michiko and Carlotta."

Silverwind shuddered as the neon-Monet astral world suddenly transformed into something closer to "Picasso meets Van Gogh meets LSD".  She could feel an enormous surge of power run through the area.  Dark power, she shivered, the kind that could only be bought with blood.  And residue of that power was in. . .

Without even thinking about it, Silverwind teleported to Michiko's sanctuary, just in time to see Alecks run in and pick up Thor.  She stood there in shock, not knowing what to do.  How did they get past the Akitas?  Or the Inn itself?

Nick woke with a start, clutching at the back of his neck. It felt like a hive of bees had taken nest there, and all decided to start stinging. This surprised him, as over the past week and a half, he hadn't had so much as a hint of the nightmares that usually plagued his sleeping hours. In fact, the nights he'd been spending staying at the Inn were among the most restful he could remember having. Which made this feeling even more disturbing.

He got up and threw on some sweats and shoes, grabbed his faithful automatic shotgun, and quietly moved outside. He'd hoped by now that he'd have his own place, but the job offer Lucas had made ten days ago wasn't panning out as he'd hoped. Lately, Lucas was spending most of his time with Vaughn, of all people, looking after Michiko. Nick wasn't sure what the deal was with her, but he suspected that she was going to be a focal point for a lot of trouble.....her and the Inn both. If weirdness was going to go on, she'd be connected to it somehow, if not at the heart of it.

So he sat on his hands while Lucas did whatever it was....not something he liked doing. Lynea had been busy running the Inn while Michiko was recovering, so there hadn't been any time to spend with her.....something he'd told himself he shouldn't be doing anyway, but knowing he had a nasty habit of not listening to his own advice.....and his injuries had healed much faster than expected. So most of his time was spent being exceedingly bored. And whenever that happens, the universe usually conspires to come up with something really mean, nasty, and deadly to help allieviate that condition.

Not knowing what he was looking for, he let his gut lead him....and his gut led him outside, to the sanctuary where Michiko most often spent her time, alone. The door was usually locked, but creaked open as Nick drew nearer.....leading with his weapon, he caught a flash of movement as he entered, too fast to track. After a few moments, when no attack came, he moved further into the sanctum. The tingling under his skin was like a rash, like millions of tiny crawling things trying to get out of him all at once. He forced down the reaction to start clawing his skin off and searched the garden for any clues, any hint of what it was that drew him here......he stopped at a patch of blood, and a scattering of feathers.....

"Terrific...." He said softly, examining the scene. Then, he straightened and looked around.....there was a presence there with him....something that felt familiar....

Shayna is gliding effortlessly in the moonlit night towards Landing and the Inn.  She'd decided to come by night simply because she enjoys flying by moonlight.  The anti-grav basket that Shai had given her, is strapped to Shayna's stomach again and contains necessary items for her extended stay, gifts for her new friends and others she might meet, and another special item.

Shayna had learned many new words and information during her day and night at the inn ten days ago, and had spent her time looking up words in the many books and holobooks the Aves had rescued from the transport ship 300 years ago.  How accurate the knowledge is Shayna doesn't  know.

As she approaches the Inn, her great wings begin to move up and down to slow her flight and help her descend.  Landing gracefully on her feet, Shayna folds her wings against her back and feels a disturbance in the air--all around her--and there is a horrible stench that is unfamiliar but nauseating.

Shayna recongnizes the racoon shaman again as he speeds off with Thor in his arms.  The bird seems hurt which upsets Shayna greatly.  She quickly unhooks the basket from her body and drops it near the door to the Inn.  It never occurs to the Ave that someone might steal it, so she has no second thoughts of leaving it.  She does open it quickly to grab one item.

"Wait, please!" She shouts after the running shaman, following him in the dark.  As Shayna runs on her slender but strong legs, she straps on a special padded harness/carrier she made which contains a 5-month old kitten, her favorite orange, striped one.  With the kitten strapped in like a baby, facing forward, and completely secure, Shayna begins to run faster until she takes off into the air to catch up to the man with Thor.

"Miko?" Jono called again, becoming more worried even as Linda kept asking if she was okay. He had been seeing to her most of the evening and wanted to give her a booster of the pain medicine she'd been taking, but for some reason the door wouldn't open, and she wasn't responding. "Shai forgive me," Jono muttered as he stepped back and kicked at the door hard.

The inn understood what he was trying to do and humored him, letting the door fall open only for Jono to enter the room to find it devoid of Michiko, this wasn't unusual, since she had a number of hidden sanctuaries within the walls of the Inn and it's grounds.

So he sat down, and went Astral, he immediately saw the warning flashes of an inhuman worry and traveleld there fast, finding Silverwind, visibly upset.

"What has happened?" he asked, getting what information Silverwind had Jono returned to his physical body.

Reaching out telepathically, he searched out Alecks. ¬Alecks, Alecks this is Jono, can you hear me? What has happened?¬

For the last ten days, Lucas had spent nearly all of his time either in the Inn itself or keeping watch on its grounds, leaving only to conduct his almost nightly patrol of Landing’s streets.  Had he been given the choice, he would never have left Michiko’s side, but she was stubbornly refusing to see anyone except Jono and Alecks.

He had been tempted numerous times to simply slip into her garden, a remarkably easy task for him, and finally confront her, tell her while she was awake what he had told her when she was in a coma.  But he knew that to force her to deal with anything more than what she already had to could only hurt her.  But that didn’t make staying away any easier.

He tried distracting himself with his self-imposed mission, prowling around the city and making a few inconsequential vampire kills.  Without realizing it, he had almost completely ignored his new partner in the process.  And the person he found himself with most often . . . Vaughn.  It was easy for Lucas to imagine he and Vaughn killing each other if Michiko had not been so badly hurt.  And now, they were working together, in however small a manner.  They were both keeping an eye on Michiko, only both had been shut out by her.  It occurred to both of them that it helped Michiko more if they weren’t at each other’s throats, and so Lucas tried to not be hostile.  At least for now.

Lucas was sitting in the main common area in the Inn when Nick went by, carrying his shotgun.  Intrigued, Lucas discreetly followed.  As Nick approached Michiko’s sanctuary, he almost stopped him, but something was tugging at the back of his mind, telling him not to.  He watched Nick enter, and found himself unable to resist the urge to quickly follow.

As soon as he entered, the deluge on his mind hit him like a fist.  Letting out a surprised gasp, he nearly toppled over.  Nick whirled around, chambering a shotgun round.

“Whoa, Nick!!” Lucas managed to get out, one hand holding his head, the other defensively out in front of him, “It’s me!”

“Jesus, Lucas!” Nick said, lowering the gun, “I almost shot you. . . .You alright?”

Lucas focused through the assault on his senses, and straightened.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.  Where’s Michiko?”

“Dunno.  All I found was this,” Nick said, indicating the bloody feathers, “and I real bad feeling.”

“It’s dark magick.  Real dark magick.  That’s what that feeling is.  God, it’s almost palpable . . . Michiko’s in serious danger . . .Come on, we’ve got to find her.”

Constance was amazed at the book.  It was perhaps the best condition she had seen.

"Come by my shop soon, we'll talk business, as you say."

The shaman quickly took off.

"I wonder what fresh hell this is?"

Constance smiled softly to herself.  There was never a shortage of entertainment at this Inn.

The hour was growing late and she hungered.  She politely paid for her undrank coco and exited the Inn.

"I know exactly who I want to make my prey."

She walked until there was noone near and took to the sky to make her trip as short as possible.  The smell of fear in the air enticed her and she needed her victim now.

The wolf yelped softly...she could smell blood, her blood. She tried to turn and lick her wounds, but her way was blocked by another. She sniffed, her other self recognised the scent...Michiko. She pawed at the womans hand...no response, she licked her face...still nothing. The wolf rested her head on the womans chest and closed her eyes..she was confused and in pain, but at least she wasn't alone. She emptied her mind and focused......she silently screamed

"Father......Alecks..help us"

Silver, with the ever-present Shiva by her side, enters the Inn. It had been 10 days since she last came here, spending the time catching up on back orders and such things to keep her business running. And it had been running very well, jewelry always was a hit with people no matter where she went.

As they enter the Inn, Shiva suddenly tenses up and starts growling. About that same time, she too senses what he had sensed-evil. Following her senses, they led her around to one of the places that Michiko liked to spend time in. She smelled the blood of the eagle and heard Lucas telling Nick that Michiko is in danger and they had to find her.

Going up to them she asks  "Is there anything we can do to help?"

"Include me in that search party," Jono said, as he trotted down the stairs. he looked at the faces of his firends, whom he had faced death with and saw the same worry he felt echoed in them.

Constance reached the Master's door step. She was showed in and found him lounging among his "fanclub"

"Everyone out!"

The Master stood in protest.

"How dare you come in here and try give orders.  I will have your head on a platter!"

Constance laughed wickedly

"Don't threaten me pup, you don't know who you are dealing with."

She walked seductively towards him.

"There is no need for all this nastiness. I came for more amiable reasons.  I thought you might like a repeat of the other night.  I found it surprisingly enjoyable."

Lawrence smiled and ordered the others out.  He stood and took her hand.

"Should we retire to my bed chamber?"

Constance pulled him towards the throne.

"No, I think I would rather stay here."

She ripped his silk shirt open, the buttons bouncing on the floor.

"I want it now!"

She was so hungry.  She waited to long between feedings.  He was strong and she wanted that strength.  Constance was made by the legendary Belle Morte and obtained much of her nurishment through sex.  He wanted her too and his desire just encouraged her hunger.

She pushed him into the chair and ripped off the remenant of his clothing.

He looked at the others and sighed, "We should probably get the gang together, this has the makings of a right stuffup."

Alecks did not stop running.  He heard the voice of the Ave, but all he could do was shout...

"No time for Thor, no time for me," And keep running for the veterinarians place.  What was her name again?  He thought, racking it... he had heard it a few times while watching the people in the inn.  Alex.  That was her name.  Sounded like his, but not his own name.

He only hoped the magic he weaved was enough for Thor to remain alive till someone who could truly help him was able to take care of him.

He felt Jono try to communicate astrally.  "NO TIME YET.  TIME MOVES ITSELF," his reply came, angrily, frustrated at his inability to do more than slow the eagle's fading life.

Carlotta's scream for help came to him.  He sobbed, a lump jumping to his throat.  "I will find you," he promised, tears streaming down his face as he stumbled up the last steps to the door of the veterinarian.

"HELP!" he yelled, pounding on the door.  "Please....  Alex?  He's going to die."

Alecks collapsed to his knees, still cradling Thor gently, severed wing in hand.  He was exhausted, physically, mentally.

Lynea walked through the inn until she spotted Nick and Lucas, along with a few others. She paused and narrowed her eyes slightly. She had been so busy running the inn, there seemed to be at least three things that needed doing every time she turned around. She had wanted to spend some more time with Nick and was growing increasingly irritated with the demands on her time. Lynea was about to turn away when she noted their expressions and strode over to them. "What's happened?" She asked.

Silver agreed with Jono. "I think it's a safe bet to assume that whoever has Michiko also has Carlotta. I can try to track them, with my and Shiva's sense of smell, we.........What was that?" She listened intently. "Did anyone else hear that? I could have sworn I heard Carlotta screaming to Alecks and her father for help. And I distinctly heard her say 'Help us.'"

Shayna hears the man shout "No time for Thor, no time for me," as he runs and she flies overhead.  Understanding that Thor must be severely hurt, Shayna lands behind the man as he collapses.  She runs over to him and kneels down, tears beginning to flow from the Aves eyes as she senses his exhaustion and pain.

"Please,"Shayna whispers to the man. "Let me help you.  Let me help Thor.  You don't know how much he means to me.  He's been visiting me in the mountains for awhile now.  He brought me here, telling me I could trust him and his Michiko.  Please, let me help you and him."

Shayna ceases speaking as the ragged breath of the man continues.  All she wants is to help Thor.  She can hear him.  He's in great pain but trying to survive.  Shayna reaches out a hand, her long-taloned fingernails held up as she strokes Thor gently.

Aiden sat on a tree stump few hundred yards away from the Inn and watched the commotion with amusement.  His owl familiar sending him images and moods of everyone in the Inn, while sitting on a window ledge.

"Marcus, let's go." The silver-haired mage called out to his companion.

The owl took off the ledge and flew over to his master, landing on Aiden's shoulder.

"It seems that some people have gone missing, master." The bird spoke in Common. "A human, a wolf and an eagle - as far as I could make it out. They are organising a search party." The familiar finished talking and closed his eyes.

"I see." The sorceror stood up and threw the black hood of his cloak over his argentum-haired head. "We'll follow them Marcus."

The strix flew up and started to hop from tree to tree, leading his master towards the Inn and ready to warn him of any danger.
