LOIS + CLARK: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN star LANE SMITH has lost his battle with neuromuscular disease ALS and died in California, according to internet reports.

The actor, 69, played PERRY WHITE in the hit TV series.

In a posting on Superman fansite KRYPTONSITE.COM, a family statement reads, "Thanks for your concern and good wishes and prayers. We are sorry to tell you that my uncle Lane Smith died earlier today (14JUN05), a blessed relief from his ALS. Thank you so much for your support."

Smith's other credits include roles in RED DAWN, AIR AMERICA and THE MIGHTY DUCKS.

Very sad to hear this. :(

I loved him on Lois & Clark, and also in the "V" TV series.

He wasn't the last Perry White; since Lois & Clark, George Dzundza played the role in Superman: TAS, Michael McKean played him on Smallville, and Frank Langella is playing him in Superman Returns.

But Lane Smith was certainly the most distinctive Perry White, even aside from the Elvis-junkie revisionism. This is sad news.

This is very sad news. Lane Smith has been a favorite of mine ever since his role in V... he was one of the very few good things about the weekly series, as compared to the miniseries...

Rest in peace. :(

He played Richard Nixon in the 1989 TV movie The Final Days. Another role came close: in an episode of the CBS Twilight Zone revival in the '80s, he played
