Indian Country Today

I'll give Barry this one, but like a coupla hundred years of Natives before me, I'm not holding my breath that a (relatively throwaway) liaisonary transition post will betide any signifcant improvement for the native people of this country, and understand thats not the conservative in me talking, it's the cynic who has heard this all before.

although as an aside I find it amusing that the english name for his tribal band is the 'Rosuebud Sioux' (although the actual tribal name is more accurate as Lakota) considering that quite a few of natives that I have talked to both full and mixed blood who are 'Sioux' really detest that name, they would rather be addressed by their band name (Lakota, Dakota, Ogalala, Hunkapapa, etc - make a point to find out out of courtesy) since 'Sioux' basically means 'Enemy.'

No people have gotten a rawer deal and less recompense from the US Government than Natives, so I hope this isn't just another blind alley, D'Monix.

^^Indeed. I appreciate that the article mentions that 6 transition folks are Native Americans. That's a bit encouraging. I'm keeping my eye on this issue: http://obamaproject....romise-to-keep/

After I read what you quoted from D, I poked around and I just bookmarked your blog, QT. I found it interesting and informative, and I was deeply touched by your Kwanzaa wish that would "restore some little bit of what so many Europeans take for granted - a deep sense of lineage."

Good Luck D!! No reason to think this president will be any different than the others when it comes to Natives.

I'm thrilled. Now let's see how Obama follows up on it.
