Nu-Avast: Problem With Microsoft Outlook This Happened After I Upgraded Avast

So, my computer prompted me to update Avast, which I did. However, when I launched Outlook, I got the alert window you see in the screencap. I followed the directions to "fix" Outlook, and this came up again.

What does this alert window mean? Does it mean any email coming through Outlook is unprotected? The only thing going for me via Outlook is that this is a private email. Only a tiny handful of people contact me here-and even then, not that often. I only need to contact my ISP from here-which is a dial-up service.

I haven't used Avast in about 2 years or so but this sounds like a problem with the real-time protection for e-mail. In other words, yes, your e-mail likely isn't being scanned since the appropriate plug-in isn't being loaded properly.

My suggestion would be to download the standalone installer for the latest version of Avast:

http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download

Then uninstall the current version you have installed and completely remove all folders and settings related to it. After that install Avast again using the standalone installer. My guess is something just got messed up during the upgrade process.

I had to swap PCs. :headshake: The Dell XPS R400 reboots repeatedly now, after a short time on the desktop. :headshake: Perhaps there IS a missing .dll file. In either event-not gonna deal with it now. :sarcasm: I switched to the Dell XPS T500. I'll continue to use this machine for the moment, until I find time to go onto the other Dell. I'll have to log in via safe mode, though I don't think any of what's there will be missed if I must reformat..

Ugh-as if I didn't have enough sh!t on my already soggy plate to deal with.

Oh no...now a red Avast window opened up on THIS computer-and it's not going away. :( GREAT. :glare:

Let's see what I can do...

^ Ugh. That sucks. :(

The DLL file that it's referencing is part of Avast. So I'm not sure why it can't find it if you just reinstalled the program.

No, I never had a chance to reinstall Avast. It began to reboot repeatedly. :headshake:

I'm at the library, and am downloading the software from the link you gave me onto my Flash drive. It's a MUCH faster connection-otherwise, I'd be up all night downloading 40 megs onto my PC. :p

Ah-download completed. :)

Oh ok! Whew! I was worried that my suggestion ended up causing more problems instead of helping. Let's hope the reinstall works. :)

NC,

Basically...

The old version of Avast I have on this machine (T500) is only good for 21 days more.

A question-while I have a pretty good idea where to look-which folders should I delete after uninstallation and how do I access them?

Okay, back to this...

I have about 12 days before I install Avast on this PC (T500). There's also the R400, which is a rebooting paperweight right now, and is sitting on the floor beside me. :p~ :headshake:

Which folders are you referring to, after the uninstall process? Basically, I'm going to do the uninstall on this PC first.

Hmmm-maybe I should create a back-up registry floppy for the T500, in case I end up having a .dll problem like the other PC, which would cause it to continually reboot?

Oy vey. :tired:

I just re-read what I wrote up-thread. I'm a f**king idiot. :headshake:

When I installed the new version of Avast on the R400, that's when the reboot problem began.

I SHOULD have said:

No, I never had a chance to reinstall Nu-Avast. It began to reboot repeatedly.

Oops, I'm sorry, Saul. I had read your post up thread back when you originally wrote it, intended to respond, and then totally forgot.

The folders I'm referring to are simply the folders Avast adds to Program Files. So basically, be sure to delete C:\Program Files\Alwil Software and any other occurrences of folders that contain Alwil or Avast. I think the one I mentioned should be the only one but it may place itself elsewhere.

Before you install it on the other PC, definitely back things up. It's unfortunate Windows 2000 doesn't have a system restore feature built-in. Or does that system have XP on it? If it has XP, make sure to create a restore point before installing Avast. That way if it does mess things up, you can just boot into safe mode and restore to the point before you installed it.

If you end up with the rebooting problem after installing it on the other PC and you suspect it's the problem (installing it and immediately getting that problem would be a good indicator...), it's possible to prevent Avast from loading on startup.

1a. (if you have Windows 2000) Download msconfig: http://www.onecomput...re/msconfig.zip

1. Run msconfig.msc (just msconfig in Windows 7 or msconfig.exe if using the above) from safe mode.

2. Click on the Services tab and check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box.

3. Make sure to uncheck Avast from the list (if it's present).

4. Click on the Statup tab. Uncheck all Avast programs on the list.

5. Click Apply and say no if it prompts you if you want to always show msconfig on startup.

Ugh.

Now, I've got the same problem on this PC (Dell T500). Except...it reboots only once after getting to the desktop. It's done that twice today. :( Also-I get the same error message I got in the top screen cap. The .dll it's referring to is there. I set it to use Outlook 5 instead of Outlook 2000. I rarely use Outlook-only to contact my ISP.

Why do I have the feeling that this new version of Avast is buggy? I was forced to upgrade to this, since the older version was expiring in less than a week. :headshake:

I seem to remember a way to set W2K so it doesn't reboot automatically. How do you do that again?

One way:

right-click "my Computer" -> properties -> Perfomance (tab) [At least I think it was Performance)

I didn't think the New Avast ran on Win2K. I didn't think the current Avast really supported it.

^ I think it's actually located in a similar location but under Startup and Recovery. But it's been a while since I've looked at Windows 2000. They may have placed it under Performance back then. It's definitely in that general area. The setting you're looking for should be under a heading called "System Failure." Just uncheck the "automatically restart" option.

Windows 2000 is definitely supported:

Quote

* Processor Pentium 3, 128 MB RAM, 100 MB of free hard disk space
* Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 (32/64 bit)

Also, if you want the older version again, Saul, it's possible to get it. Just go to the downloads page, click the All Downloads tab, and scroll down to version 4.8. I'm not sure if they let you register that with a new key but it's worth a shot.

Orph/NC:

It did it again-it rebooted once.

:wallbash:

I unchecked automatic restart, so I guess next time I reboot I get a BSOD. :ninjadeath: :xena: I'll be sure to photograph that with my digital camera. :headshake:

Why is the PC DOING that?!?!

I have a friend who had huge issues with Avast also (running Windows 7 x64), but he decided to switch to one he has access through from his dad's work. I hate to say there is not much I can do to help, but I have not run Avast in a very long time, and everyone else seems to give the advice I would before me.

Zanthra,

Nothing pisses me off more than when they take a decent program and f*ck it up. I'll have to find another free one or buy one ( :barf: ) The problem is that money is VERY tight. :(

Quick update, and then I'm off to bed (gotta get up early for work)...

I set Norton System Doctor to do a disk check on reboot, which it did. Then it rebooted, and everything was okay. No crashes/BSODs. That DOESN'T mean everything IS okay, though.

Off to bed...
